Change, the Magazine for Higher Learning recently published a ranking of 
the soc. departments.  This was reprinted in one of the campus newsletters
here at UC Davis for the eight UC campuses which have sociology departments.
For Socgrad list users, here is the list

Berkeley       3
\Davis         32
Irvine         52
Los Angeles    6
Riverside      42
San Diego      36
Santa Barbara  24
Santa Cruz     56

      This survey is taken from the U.S. News and World Report survey of 1992.
It presumably reflects the reputation of each of these departments for 
scholarship, curriculum, and quality of faculty and graduate students
(that is us).
       I think that we all recognize that such comparison rankings have a
limited utility when comparing graduate programs.  Nevertheless, in the
above list I am struck that the highest ranking UC campus was recently on
strike over issues of graduate student employment. In this context, my
question for Socgrad list users is if graduate students were to evaluate
the quality of the University of California's graduate program, would we
have the same relative rankings?  Is there a way fo us as graduate
students to come up with an alternative ranking system?
