Subject: teacher training
Someone just emailed me complaining that discussion on Socgrad stopped over the
last few days.  Where'd everyone go?

Here's one topic for public discussion:  what kind of teacher training
programs do departments or universities make available to their TAs?
Here at UCSD, there used to be a university-sponsored orientation for
new TAs until the funding got cut.  Even that, while useful, wasn't sufficient;
now we're pretty much left on our own with whatever assistance the faculty
in charge of the class gives us.  We all know that grad students tend to
make the most enthusiastic and committed teachers, but surely some practical
guidance (as well as official indication that teaching matters) would be
nice.
