"Society" is undoubtedly our grandest reification. Like "doing" religion,
"doing" society becomes an endeavor of faith and ritual. God is a good
metaphor, but perhaps Satan is better (unless, of course, you happen to
adhere to the tenets of functionalism). For as Nietzsche cleverly noted
long ago: "God is dead and we have killed him (sic)." Is this indeed the
twilight of the idols?
