Ethnographies I have always enjoyed are Margery Wolf's "The House of Lim" (Taiwan), Margery Shostak's "Nisa" (!Kung), Gail Bernstein's "Haruko's World" (Japan), Erika Friedl "Women of Deh Koh" (Iran). Although old now, Elizabeth Fernea's "Guests of the Shief" is wonderful. You might also look for some life histories of women: there are several for native American women. Oh, Murphy and Murphy's "Women of the Forest" (on the Mundurucu in Brazil) is also good. I wrote a book "We Have Already Cried Many Tears" which is the life histories of three portuguese migrant women. I think it is readable. Also, do you know the reader "Gender in Cross-Cultural Perspective" that my colleague Carolyn Sargent and I published with Prentice-Hall last year. It is a good text for such a course and contains selections from ethnographies. Hope this helps. Caroline Brettell, Anthropology, SMU, Dallas
