For those of you who may be test-phobic, we don't have any prelims here
(although there are some who think this policy should be reconsidered).  The
department requires the same basic statistics, field methods and theory
courses as every other department.  They also require that students take three
courses in one area of specialization in the department (social organization,
comparative/historical, or social inequality).  After those three courses, and
writing a master's thesis, mastery is assumed.  There is no trial by fire.

Just thought I'd share this, since it sounds very different from other places.
