The University of Kentucky requires two prelims: one in methods and one in theory. Each prelim covers material from 3 required courses - 3 courses (9 hours) in methods and 3 courses (9 hours) in theory. Both prelims are closed book (memory - no notes) exams and each is taken in one-day - 8 hours long in an available dept. office. If both prelims are passed, you may proceed to the design of a qualifying exam or task with your committee. Do any other departments require 8 hour memory exams over 3 semesters of course work? You do not see the questions until you enter the exam room. What do you think is the value of an 8 hour memory exam and its relation to the nature of your future work as an academic? thanks, jd
