This is the disturbing subtext in much leftish pomoismo. Does modernity mean the inheritance of Enlightenment rationalism, which is to be attacked in itself rather than in its distorted instrumentalist form (a la the Frankfurters)? Does it mean industrial civilization itself rather than its distorted class forms? Does it mean the idea of progress, in the name of antiteleological particularist freeplay? If this be the good postmodernism, gimme the Grundrisse. Doug Henwood [dhenwood@panix.com]
