-------- PSN MODERATION CRITERIA --------- Moderation is both quantitative and qualitative. Using limit software, all members of psn, including the moderators, are limited to no more than 7 of the last hundred messages submitted. Detailed information on limits is found in http://csf.colorado.edu/lists/psn/limits.html Qualitative moderation follows these guidelines: There are many and conflicting sociological perspectives based on many interpretations of Marxism, post- and neo- Marxisms and various currents of radical and progressive thought. But whatever the theory underlying a message may be, to be accepted for PSN the message must consist of an effort by the sender to do one or several of the following: 1. to engage the membership in the consideration, examination, critique, or elaboration of a sociological insight, proposition, theory, concept, research finding about whatever issue the sender finds sociologically interesting. 2. to engage the membership in a theoretical discussion about a specific theoretical problem; e.g., is rational choice theory compatible with Marxist theory? 3. to engage the membership in the sociological discussion of a newly published and controversial book or journal article. 4. to engage the membership in the discussion of a book or journal article the sender found so interesting that he or she felt compelled to share it with PSN. 5. to engage the membership in the discussion of a policy issue, examining its various aspects sociologically, bringing sociology (of whatever kind) to shed light on it. There are many other possibilities, but the key words are engage and sociological. In addition, PSN accepts the following: 1. announcements about employment opportunities, post-doctoral fellowships and other job possibilities. 2. messages having to do with professional activities e.g., conference announcements, calls for papers, informations about teach-ins, etc. 3. messages about teaching: asking for and supplying information e.g., help in identifying relevant sources, sillabi, shared experience in teaching techniques, requests for input for collections of syllabi, etc. 4. messages about the Section on Marxist Sociology or any other ASA Section; 5. messages about sociologically relevant Internet resources and new softwares, CD-Roms, etc. and about sociologically relevant videos, films, and T.V. programs. And finally, please do not cc a personal reply to either PSN or PSN-CAFE unless you think the entire list will find your remarks sociologically interesting and pleeeeease, when responding to a message, delete most of it and keep only the relevant parts.
