I study the modern world-system in order to figure out how to build a
global socialist society. I also study earlier smaller world-systems
in order to understand how modes of production become transformed.
Recent books are _Global Formation_ (Blackwell, 1989) and _Core/Periphery
Relations in Precapitalist Worlds_ [with Tom Hall](Westview, 1991). I am
very interested in possible future hegemonic rivalry among core powers and the
rise of the world state.
