By 1937, compulsory sterilization laws had adopted legislation in 31 of the 48 US states (Eugenic News 1937:94; cf. Landman 1932). The first was Indiana in 1907; then Washington, California and Connecticut in 1909; Nevada, Iowa, and New Jersey in 1911; and New York in 1912). See: Landman, J. H. 1932.
