He argued that stifling immigration would exacerbate economic problems, not help them. It even sounded like he was arguing that immigration laws should be relaxed because the birthrate is not keeping up with economic growth, especially with all the baby-boomers retiring in one huge wave. He said that at current population growth and job growth, people will have to pay 50% of their income to support Medicare and Social Security. (I think that's what he said.) The innate contradiction between economic growth and birthrate shrinkage is one that I never see addressed. How can a continuingly shrinking work force support "the elders", those going into retirement?
