The Medical Sociology Section of the American Sociological Association is 
proud to announce that Robert Straus is the 1998 recipient of the Leo G. 
Reeder Award for a distinguished career in Medical Sociology.  He is 
Professor Emeritus in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University 
of Kentucky School of Medicine.  He was a founder of the Medical Sociology 
Section and long-time active leader in it.  Professor Straus has been a 
major intellectual figure in the field, especially in the area of alcohol 
abuse. He has also been a powerful initiator of social science programs in 
medical schools.  

We are also proud to announce that David Mechanic, a former recipient of the 
Reeder Award in 1983, has been chosen to receive a Certificate of 
Appreciation for a lifetime of service specifically to the Medical Sociology 
Section.  Professor Mechanic is the Renee Dubos Professor of Behavioral 
Sciences at Rutgers University.  In addition to his rich career in 
sociology, he has long given much of himself to the training of graduate 
students and postdoctoral scholars in our field, and has been a major 
presence in the life of the Section.

Both these colleagues will receive their awards at the 1998 Business Meeting 
of the Medical Sociology Section in San Francisco in August 1998.  Our 
congratulations to them, and our thanks for their great contribitions!
