Flood) Subject: post doc opportunity To: medsoc@csf.colorado.edu (Medical Sociology List) POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences Dartmouth College Hanover, NH The Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth conducts cutting-edge research in the areas of medical outcomes, small area variations, quality improvement, medical care epidemiology, health policy, and health care decision making, with the goal of measuring, organizing and improving health care for the next century. We are presently seeking three post-doctoral fellows to be appointed under an Institutional National Research Service Award (NRSA) from the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These NRSA Fellowships assume a two year commitment, with renewal after one year subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding of NRSAs from AHCPR. The program offers exposure to the breadth of the research at the institution-particularly, multi-disciplinary team research-while emphasizing the in-depth pursuit of research on a specific problem under the mentorship of one or more faculty members. Fellows entering this program are expected to have made a commitment to a career in which health services research will be a dominant theme. Accordingly, we anticipate that most will have identified an area of interest and/or mentor(s) and therefore will have determined in which research group they would like to begin their post-doctoral studies. Candidacy Requirements. A doctoral degree, i.e., a Ph.D. or Sc.D., in a related science or a clinical doctorate, e.g., M.D. or D.O., with formal education in research methods equivalent to an M.P.H. or a relevant Master's degree. Candidates must be US citizens, noncitizen nationals or permanent residents of the United States. Stipend Level. The NRSA post-doctoral award includes a stipend, the federally mandated level of which is determined by the number of years of relevant post-doctoral experience at the time of appointment and ranges from $19,608 for less than 1 year post-doc experience to $32,300 for 7 or more years. The award also includes funding for any required course tuition and fees, trainee medical insurance and training-related travel. Payback Obligation. During the first 12 months of post-doctoral NRSA support, trainees incur one month of obligation for each month of support, and they must sign a payback agreement acknowledging this obligation at the time of their initial appointment. The 13th and each subsequent month of post-doctoral NRSA support will be considered acceptable payback service. Therefore, fellows completing a two-year period under this award will have fulfilled the payback obligation. Application Process. The earliest possible start date for these fellowships is immediately; the latest possible start date is Sept. 30, 1999. Interested candidates should send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample and three letters of recommendation to Ann Barry Flood, Ph.D., CECS, Dartmouth Medical School, 7251 Strasenburgh Hall, Hanover, NH 03755-3863. There is no official closing date for applying, but awards are subject to continued availability. For additional information, see the addresses and telephone numbers below. From: Ann B.
