Initiatives like Propositions 187 and 209 in California, English-only legislation, anti-affirmative action campaigns, the militarization of the US-Mexico border, police brutality, racially-motivated INS RAIDS in our neighborhoods and workplaces, corporate campaigns to keep us unorganized, and the deliberate lies and misinformation by the media, are all part of a movement to violate our human rights and maintain our status as second-class citizens. These initiatives attempt to erase our indigenous roots on this continent, but finally we are reclaiming our history, our birth right. We are quickly becoming the largest ethnic group in the United States. We are a great power. We are slowly tapping our strength, as with the massive voter registration drives stemming from the 187 campaign in California that elected the first Mexican-American Congresswoman from Orange County, previously an anti-immigrant stronghold. Recently, the general strike against the privatization of the Puerto Rican phone company showed the entire world our determination and capacity to mobilize our communities. This strike served as an example for all workers of the world, faced by the same corporate currents and struggling to maintain the achievements of the past. But we can't just react. We need to offensively direct and consolidate our power, not only to counter these increasing attacks, but to progress and enact changes beneficial to all peoples. Xican@os, Boricuas, Cuban@s and all Latin@s have played a key role--in some cases the dominant role--in building the North American economy, and have participated in labor struggles alongside workers of differing origins. However, we still find we have no voice in decisions that impact our people. It is time we join together and unite in struggle, for our children's sake. We need to educate and mobilize our communities as part of an organized and proactive response; and we at Latin@s United in Labor wish to play a role in building this national movement side by side with all interested organizations. Latin@os United in Labor can not lead this movement, but we are able to provide a forum for its growth. To this end, Latin@os United in Labor is organizing a _progressive_ labor and community _conference_ to focus on the growing power of Latin@s and how to tap it as we fight the violations and attacks on the human rights of our community. Estas iniciativas buscan borrar nuestras raices indigenas en este continente, pero ya estamos reclamando nuestra historia, nuestros derechos. Pronto seremos el grupo etnico mas grande de todos los Estados Unidos. Somos una gran fuerza. Por fin estamos utilizando nuestra fuerza, como se vio en los esfuerzos de registrar al pueblo para votar, esfuerzos que surgieron en contra de la campana del 187 en California, y que lograron la eleccion de la primera congresista mexicana de Orange County, previamente una fortaleza xenofobica de politica racista. Mas reciente, el paro general en contra de la privatizacion de la telefonica y la politica neoliberal del gobierno de Puerto Rico mostro al mundo entero la determinacion y capacidad de mobilizacion de los pueblos y trabajadores Latinos. Pero no podemos solo reaccionar. Necesitamos canalizar y dirigir nuestro poder, no solamente para defendernos de estos ataques, sino para progresar y realizar cambios que beneficien a todos los pueblos. Xican@s, Boricuas, Cuban@s y todos l@s Latin@s han tenido un papel clave--en algunos casos el papel dominante--en el desarrollo de la economia Norte Americana, y han participado en luchas sindicales junto a trabajadores de toda raza y descendencia. Sin embargo, todavia vemos que no tenemos una voz en las decisiones que impactan a nuestros pueblos. Ya es hora que nos unamos, juntando nuestras fuerzas para el bien de nuestr@s hij@s. Necesitamos educar y mobilizar nuestras comunidades para dar respuesta de una manera organizada y ofensiva; y Latin@s United in Labor desea ser parte de este proceso desarrollando un movimiento nacional junto con todas las organizaciones interesadas.
