I need the documentation. I need people to know that there is good science backing up what you're saying. Let's go through the risk factors that you feel are being overlooked, that are the real causes of the syndrome they're calling "AIDS". DR. RUTE BERNSTEIN: Okay. All of these have been published in reviews that I've done: RESEARCH IN IMMUNOLOGY, PERSPECTIVES IN BIOLOGY & MEDICINE, IOS, which is an Italian journal. There are other reviews by people in RESEARCH IN IMMUNOLOGY. Peter Duseberg[sp] has done quite a few, including THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE. Any kind of immunological stimulation with things like semen or foreign blood cells, white blood cells from another individual, which are found in semen and in blood transfusions, can and do trigger immune suppression. Unfortunately, the blood factors -- the clotting factors that are used by hemophiliacs -- are known to cause immune suppression, so that most hemophiliacs have lower than normal T cell counts as compared to people who don't have hemophilia. They are already at a higher risk for all infections than most people are. We recently found that if you ultrapurify the blood clotting factor, then this takes care of the problem, suggesting that there is a lot of immune-stimulating junk, quite literally, in most factor concentrates. Multiple blood transfusions, in and of themselves, are known to cause immune suppression -- and that's been known for about two decades, at this point -- and is even used on purpose to immune-suppress people who are going to receive foreign grafts for tissues such as heart transplants, liver transplants, kidney transplants, because the immune system no longer rejects the foreign tissue. Unfortunately, it does the same thing in everybody else and makes the blood transfusion patient more susceptible to all infections. There are things like drugs, certainly the addictive drugs: cocaine, morphine, heroin, things like that have all been known to be immune- suppressive for more than a century. And that's been very much ignored. Many of the recreational drugs -- these include things like "snappers" and "poppers" -- these, by themselves, are not going to cause AIDS, but again, massive use of them or prolonged use of them can tear down the body's immune system and make you more susceptible to other problems. Unfortunately, most of the antibiotics that we use are known to cause some form of immune suppression, and the worst of these are the ones that are used to treat enteric diseases, diseases of the intestine which, unfortunately have been very common in the past among gay men. They are also used to treat diseases such as malaria in very high-risk areas of the World such as Africa. In addition, there are various interactions between some of the addictive drugs and recreational drugs and antibiotics, things like the nitrites/ that convert many antibiotics into carcinogens. And this may have been a tremendous problem for very promiscuous people who were getting high, perhaps going off to baths, having intercourse with many people, taking antibiotics to prevent getting sexually- transmitted diseases, unfortunately creating the carcinogens without their knowledge and perhaps without the knowledge of the physicians who are prescribing the antibiotics. We can continue with all of the immune suppressants: viruses and bacteria. There are things such as cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis viruses, which are highly correlated with AIDS, as is HIV. Active infections are found in virtually every person who has active AIDS. These viruses will cause immune suppression by themselves. It's been shown in animal models that combined infections will end up causing synergistic effects the same way that alcohol and barbituates, for example, are more than additive in their effects. So are many of these viruses. The final, and maybe the most important, particularly for sub- Saharan Africa and, unfortunately, for many drug addicts as well -- malnutrition is the oldest known depressant or suppressant of the immune system. And, simply through malnutrition, there have been people developing the same opportunistic infections that we see with AIDS for as long as you can trace back the medical literature. GARY NULL: Alright. Good. So you're telling us that all these are co-factors that, in and of themselves, taken in combination over a period of time, a person suffering from malnutrition and multiple viruses: syphilis, some of the other mycoplasms, some of the other bacterial or viral contaminants -- will lower the body's immune system, dropping the T cells [count] down so that opportunistic infections, including the twenty-four or so that they are now calling "AIDS", can manifest themselves, even in the ABSENCE of HIV. And, since everything that they are now calling "AIDS" has been around, many of these things [these specified viruses] since the 1800s, it certainly cannot be viewed as a new syndrome because none of these are new. DR. BERNSTEIN: That's right. The other very important point about all this is that HIV itself may not infect healthy people. And there is some evidence of this. It's very difficult to transmit it to a healthy surgeon who cuts himself. There is lots of evidence, for example, that female prostitutes who do not engage in drug use do not tend to get HIV either. There are very, very few cases [contradicting this evidence] on record. GARY NULL: Alright. Let's go into that in-depth, because right now they're trying to link sex, almost EXCLUSIVELY (with the exception of hemophilia), as the cause of AIDS. I'd like you to tell us exactly what the evidence shows about this. So please help to disseminate it by posting the episodes of this ongoing series to computer bulletin boards, and by posting hardcopies in public places, both on and off campus. John DiNardo
