The Campaign was initiated at the first meeting of campesino and indigenous organization in Bogota in 1989 in response to international plans to "celebrate" the 500th anniversary of the Conquest. The objectives of the Campaign include: Reflecting on the implications for our continent of the past 500 years. Joining with the popular movements of the Americas in activities and initiatives to build a future of genuine independence.
