In our BBS, we recently opened a conference on the 500 years, focussing on both church- and na people-issues. We intent to exchange materials between the two conferences. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: cscheiner@igc.org Date: 27 Sep 91 17:50 PDT Subject: Re: intros / conference directions Message-ID: <1563600016@igc.org> I am Charles Scheiner, a local/national (US)/international activist with the Westchester Peoples Action Coalition (WESPAC), Mobilization for Survival and War Resisters League, and the Nuclear-Free and Independent Pacific movement. All three are grappling with how to address the 500th anniversary, and have already begun to some extent. In the NFIP movement, more recently invaded ("discovered") countries are still under indigenous control with indigenous majorities, and are resisting political, economic, and cultural colonialism from the US and European powers. Check out reg.pacific for more information. I look forward to learning from and using this conference to see how primarily non-indigenous people can relate to the Quincentenary, to learn from crimes of the past and prevent their continual repetition. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: pstanfield@igc.org Date: 27 Sep 91 22:55 PDT Subject: Re: intros / conference directions Message-ID: <1563600017@igc.org> My name is Pablo Stanfield; i am a consultant in human systems and intercultural conflict resolution working with a small group called Inter/Act Institute for Intercultural Understanding. I am a Quaker and like Quakers from the first colonies in this continent have been appalled at how other Europeans treat the native peoples. I am also bicultural and bilingual Latino and Anglo. I love Spain and Latin America and am distressed at how the Italians are stealing Colo'n (a perfectly good catala'n surname and family) and the Hispanic heritage while everyone celebrates Anglo-America and ignores the Conquista and Latin America. The peoples of the rest of America also are trying to deal with these 500 years of mestizo, criollo, and indigena together. The AFSC office in Seattle is quite concerned to make the next year a valid celebration of all Americans and re-evalu- ation of the impact of colonization on this continent. I will serve as a liaison with them and pn. if you'd like. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: lwilliams@igc.org Date: 01 Oct 91 16:11 PDT Subject: Re: intros / conference directions Message-ID: <1563600034@igc.org> My name is Loretta Williams. I'm an activist sociologist who has developed materials for the National Council of Churches on the Quincentennial. I'm also active in a Greater Boston counter-Quinc. coalition, AQUA: Alternative Quincentenary Understandings and Actions. (If you're in Boston, join us. Call (617) 523-0555 for next meeting date.) I will enter elsewhere a letter to PBS which we (NCCC Racial Justice Working Group) are sending about the Columbus and the Age of Discovery series. I urge others to do likewise, and to pressure local PBS stations to give equal time for community responses. The series, as biased as it is, can be a good organizing vehicle. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: hkoehler@web.apc.org Date: 07 Oct 91 10:14 PDT Subject: Re: intros / conference directions Message-ID: <240100003@web.apc.org> hkoehler CASNP LONDON WIICH KE YIG Wiich Ke Yig (Friends Who Walk with Us) is the London Chapter of The Canadian Alliance in Solidarity with the Native Peoples (CASNP). In terms of goals the most I hope for is the exchange of info about activities around America (the hemisphere). I will post info about a conference scheduled for Oct 7, 92 in Washington DC entitled "500 Years of Resistance: The Columbus Legacy and the African" at Howard University. It will focus on the African American presence.
