You are invited to participate in and co-sponsor our planned events. A proposal from the Nevada Desert Experience and the Western Shoshone National Council for a series of events including an indigenous peoples conference, demonstration and Mother Earth healing ceremony received wide spread support in the US and approval from the Global Anti Nuclear Alliance (GANA) in Stockholm, Sweden in July of 1991. A remarkably broad and cooperative coalition of Native Americans, radiation victims/survivors, peace and justice, and environmental organizations formed in Las Vegas to begin planning for a series of events in Las Vegas and at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site in October of 1992. We have had three planning meetings. Our first meeting in September 21, 1991, produced definite project plans and objectives for 1992. The last two meetings supplied additional recommendations and brainstorms. This coalition together planned and is organizing an international conference from October 2-12, 1992 which will generate publicity and raise the visibility of indigenous peoples and public health issues toward promoting: -Documentation and testimony of human rights violations and the way indigenous peoples were and in some cases still are being deprived of their homelands, which constitute a threat to their very existence. -Self-determination and land grievances resolutions with examples from various groups, tribes and indigenous nations that have met with success in their own situations. -The development of a research coalition to identify and document the health effects associated with nuclear testing to protect the environment and public health for the next 500 years. -Mass demonstration and healing ceremony coinciding with two groups of European walkers at the Nevada Test Site gates calling for the end of nuclear testing and return of the test site to its rightful stewards. These events will bring together indigenous people from the far corners of the world, radiation victims/survivors, peace & justice and environmental organizations. The future of humanity is uncertain at best. Health effects from nuclear power and radioactive waste disposal; weapons development and testing; indigenous peoples human rights violations and confiscation will obtain publicity and visibility to educate both citizens and policy makers of the great harm already done to the environment and humanity. With an uncertain future, humanity can learn from indigenous peoples that have survived 500 years of oppression and still welcome strangers to their lands as friends because they believe that air, water and land belongs to all humanity. The activities we have planned for October 1992 have the involvement of several organizations. Each of these organizations possess the qualification s for completion of various components of our 1992 Indigenous Peoples Forum and Healing Ceremony. We invite your organization to take an active role in this event and welcome your participation at our next open planning meeting in San Fransisco on January 11-12 1992.
