Ex-Panther Runs for Office Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther, ran as a Democrat for a House of Representatives seat from Illinois. Rush is criticized by conservatives for his radical past, and by radicals for his reactionary present. Newsweek notes that Rush is "lucky to be alive" considering he was at the Chicago Panther house with Fred Hampton and Mark Clark the night that house was raided, but "left shortly before Chicago police killed [them]."Notes: Newsweek 11/2/92, p. 52. Lucky or in on the deal? Truly insightful is Rush's recent realization that "most African-Americans just want a comfortable, middle-class life-style. Twenty-five years ago, I didn't know that." MIM thinks that most Blacks want political power, and 25 years ago Bobby Rush did know that! --MC31 Perot's Panther Story "Mr. Perot's most flamboyant claim of conspiracies directed against himself came on Oct. 19, in the third debate of Mr. Perot, Bill Clinton and George Bush, when Mr. Perot claimed that the Vietnamese had in 1969 sent a team of Black Panther Party members to kill him. "But ABC World News Tonight, which investigated the story, found considerable reason to doubt it. 'Listen to me,' said Paul McCaghren, who headed Dallas police intelligence operations in 1969. 'It didn't happen. It did not happen.' "Mr. McCaghren explained: 'Well, there were only about eight people here that belonged to the Black Panther Party. Two of those people worked for us and they told us every day what was happening.'" --The New York Times 10/26/92, p. A1. --MC49 Oh yeah, that... They had another election in Amerika this year, and the results were a breath-taking mandate for change. Here's a roundup: - The rate of re-election for incumbents in Congress plunged from 96% in 1990 to 90% in 1992. And beyond that startling indicator of the openness of American Demokracy, a "socialist" has proven that he, too, can join the ranks of the congressional elite, as Bernie Sanders won re-election in Vermont. - Women (you know, the gender-men with female anatomy who sometimes gain power in oppressor nations) nearly doubled their rate of representation in Congress, from 5% to 9% (that's almost one in 10!). - Blacks (including sold-out former Black Panthers such as Bobby Rush) didn't do quite as stunningly, though they still made gains, increasing their representation in congress from 5% to 7% (that's more than half their proportion of the population!). In the Senate alone, however, the rate of Black representation skyrocketed by infinity percent, from 0% to 1%. (The same rate of growth in the Senate was recorded by Native Americans.) And while most of those Black people who went to the polls chose Clinton, the total number of Black votes for Clinton adds up to less than one-third of the Black population aged 18 and over. (In other words, Blacks who refused to vote for Clinton outnumbered those who did by more than 2-to-1.) - Latinos are still slightly behind, increasing their representation from 2% to 3%. - Bill Clinton, the man who promised to put 100,000 more pigs on ghetto and barrio streets, gained a stunning mandate for change, as almost 24% of the eligible voters gave him their endorsement (that's 43% of the 55% turnout). At this rate, in about 20 years biological females and Blacks will have proportional representation, and there will be 500,000 new pigs out there to keep the people -- including by then some 4 million prisoners -- in line. They can have the puppets in government, we'll take the prisoners, and then after we settle this thing we can start collecting on 500 years of very bad debts. --The New York Times, 11/5/92 Sec. B. Black population is 1989 figure, from 1991 Statistical Abstract. (Projections are MIM's; take em with a grain o'salt.) --MC12 Review: "Husbands and Wives" by Woody Allen Besides providing an unintentional parallel to his personal life, Woody Allen's new movie tells us that monogamy just doesn't work the way it's supposed to. "Husbands and Wives" is the story of two long-married couples who socialize over dinner and drinks in New York, agonizing over their various mid-life crises. In the opening scene we learn that the friends of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow (playing one couple) are separating, and that both partners are thrilled. Mia freaks out, and we later learn that's because she wants out of her own lifeless marriage to Woody, because she has the hots for this cute guy in her office. In other words, her friends' breakup represents what she really wants for herself. This is Freud 101. The husband in the breaking-up couple has had numerous affairs during the marriage, including regular visits to high-priced call girls. He moves in with a much-younger aerobics instructor who he physically and emotionally abuses when he realizes that he still loves his wife -- who is now seeing the cute guy from Mia's office. Meanwhile, the supposedly stable and open, honest relationship of Woody and Mia begins to deteriorate when he falls for one of his writing class students. She falls for him too. She has dated other older men, just like her daddy. This is Freud 102. In the end the couple with the cheating abusive husband gets back together, realizing that the bonds of years of marriage and raising children are too tough to break. The cool part is that they figure out that while this may not be the perfect relationship (MIM knows there is no such thing) it is worth sticking it out and working through their communication problems. But, meanwhile the other couple who didn't really cheat (except for the kiss between Woody and his student) break up and find new, "better" partners. So, the moral of the story is: cheat on your spouse, and be selfish and mean, and eventually the relationship will just get itself back on track. But, try honestly to make it work and be faithful and communicate and the marriage will ultimately fail. --a comrade Amerikkkan Women Surpass European Sisters Amerika may lag behind European countries in providing such necessities as health care and parental leave to its labor aristocracy, but when it comes to golf Amerikan women have gained much greater access to privilege. Bourgeois European sports enthusiasts are watching with dismay as the Amerikan women's golf tours rack up sponsors and prizes, drawing good golfers from the Continent to the (former) Colonies. The women's golf tours offer about six times as much prize money as the Europeans. Amerikan women this year will win more than $20 million in prizes. Of course, Amerikan "feminists" will not rest until rich women "earn" as much playing golf as men do, and they still lag behind men, even in Amerika. After golf (and yachting), pseudo-feminism will still need to find away to elect equal numbers of women imperialists to the U.S. Congress. Fortunately for the people, women of the Third World proletariat are not about to wait for the golf proceeds to trickle down before taking their share. --The Economist 10/31/92, p. 96. --MC12 Palestinian Nationals Get Immigration Heat by MC99 In a case contrived by the U.S. government to set a precedent for deporting those working to help Third World liberation struggles, in late October a deportation hearing for two Palestinians began in Los Angeles. Hamide and Michel Shedadeh have been accused of being terrorists for distributing a magazine and fund-raising. They were arrested at gun point in January 1987 and charged under the 1950 McCarren-Walter Act that prohibits subversive support of world communism. A Los Angeles district court declared in 1989 that such cold war ideological grounds are unconstitutional, violating the First Amendment. This of course was merely a bump in the road for the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). The next available law under which to indict the Palestinians was the 1990 Immigration Act. This decree has a provision that outlaws "terrorist activities." The INS claimed that Hamide and Michel Shedadeh belonged to a terrorist faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization known as the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The provision makes materially supporting a group's terrorist activities illegal. The two Palestinians have never been arrested or accused of committing terrorist acts. Hamide states "It is ludicrous to call me a terrorist, I raised thousands of dollars for schools and hospitals on the West Bank, in Gaza and in Lebanon. I put on dinner dances at the Hollywood Palladium and the Masonic Temple in Beverly Hills. I reject anybody's terrorism, but I am not against the struggle for national liberation and human rights. My beliefs got me in trouble." The crux of the defense is that the law does not state that it is illegal to support humanitarian or cultural activities of any group, only "terrorist" activities. Six other Palestinians were also arrested are charged with technical violations of the Immigration Act, such as not taking enough courses to fulfil visa requirements. Hamide and Michel Shedadeh were not in violation of any petty rules, so the feds resorted to the Immigration Act to carry out their deportation agenda. Shortly after the arrests were made a document jointly sponsored by the U.S. Department of Justice, the FBI and the INS titled "Alien Terrorists and Undesirables: A Contingency Plan" appeared in the Los Angeles Times, which described a plan to imprison thousands of residents from the Middle East -- Arabs, Iranians and people from eight other Middle Eastern countries in Louisiana and Florida in case an international crisis heightened the security agenda of the United States. Officials denied the legitimacy of the document, but some think one such camp already exists in Oakdale, Louisiana. But a heightened security situation is a bogus concept; Amerika continually has an interest in deporting the oppressed because it is these groups that threaten imperialism. The INS makes it clear that they do not want anyone to get the idea that aliens have the same privileges as Amerikkkans. Duke Austin of the INS asks, "A non-citizen in the United States -- does he have the full range of privileges and rights? And that is what I think is being contested here." Well not only do such persons as Hamide and Michel Shedadeh not have the "rights" of U.S. citizens, but they are targeted for supporting anti-imperialist movements, because the oppressors know that links between First World radicals and Third World liberation fighters will hasten their demise. source: San Francisco Weekly 11/4/92. -30- Subscribe to MIM Notes: Individual: Institutional: 1 year domestic $12 1 year domestic $48 2 years domestic $20 2 years domestic $90 1 year overseas $36 1 year overseas $60 Make checks payable to "ABS" or send cash.
