GAY LESBIAN UNIVERSITY K N O W L E D G E = E M P O W E R M E N T GLU Extension Course News "Creating & Maintaining GLUs" PRESS RELEASES Working with the press Press releases are one of the best ways that GLU/Seattle has developed to get the messages out to the public. The purchase of advertising in local Gay press, and others, is very expensive. By using the press idea creatively and having friendly supportive press is important. Some GLU locations may not have any Gay press near by. In that case use what press you can. The approach in these situations would probably be different yet not impossible. Your GLU catalog might be the Gay press in your area. Press releases are not something that have to be a difficult task. The papers in the Seattle area usually have calendar sections. By sending the papers the monthly catalogs it keeps them up on what is happening at GLU. On top of sending the local press the GLU catalog it is a good idea to either fax, mail or drop by information the papers may or may not choose to print. GLU has found it important to attempt to get something printed on a very regular basis. Faxing is a great way to get a lot of information to the right places as fast as possible. Remember to ask permission first. Most of the press that I deal with are very friendly about the sending of faxes. Press releases can cover almost any sort of GLU information: New catalog releases New or interesting class stories What is GLU introductions Information about teaching and subscribing Activities and events at GLU Controversy GLU Seattle was attacked by a group of right winger Christians. That makes for good copy.
