GAY LESBIAN UNIVERSITY K N O W L E D G E = E M P O W E R M E N T GLU Extension Course News "Creating & Maintaining GLUs" Support NON SUPPORTIVE Support GLU Seattle One of the main points in all the GLU/Seattle efforts is to be as supportive as possible to prospective GLU type creators. To people that have taken the course. Locally Local support seems to be at the top of the list as far as needs go for people starting GLU type projects. Talking GLU up. Approaching locals. Getting the word out is the only way you ever get any feed back. By applying much of the rest of the text in these chapters you might get this support. GLU/Seattle does not have that much support. But if you have been around the activism bizz much, you probably already know that generally there is not that much support out there for anything. GLU Networking Networking with others that are interested in sharing their experiences is an great way to gain good support. Teach and learn from those that are doing. To date 3.1.93 nobody else is interested. I assume that is because a number of reasons. Lazy not creative and or they have been to cheap to help support GLU with the tuition. The tuition has been dropped so everyone can now sneak around and take this junk and read it for free. How about that for service. NON SUPPORTIVE RIGHT WING Verbal and other attacks Dealing with Or not dealing with. This topic goes well with support issues. GLU/Seattle has found it important to keep people around it in the community aware of any acts of abusive nature from right winger and other crazies. Silence in this case can mean death. Let others in on any nuts that come your way. GLU/Seattle has been verbally assaulted at the street information table on a regular basis. The public seems to be more comfortable with the idea now and they don't yell and scream as much. Also GLU/Seattle is less sensitive to be out in the public in this fashion. Being on the cutting edge. Yuuuck. GLU/Seattle was attacked on one occasion by a small band of very angry religious nuts. The situation was such that it was very important to clear the area. It was fortunate that no phsyical violence occured. Ever been whacked by a big cross. This was the type of situation that GLU/Seattle feared would happen. But instead of hiding this information from the public an article about the incident was written and published in the local press. GLU/Seattle thinks it impotant to not allow this sort of bull to go unoticed. HOMOPHOBIA ETC From homosexuals and others. It must be understood from the beginning that there are going to many people that are not gong to give positive feed back. Don't take these lossers to heart. Take what you want from them and leave the rest. GLU/Seattle has heard some wild comments. GLU has received unfriendly calls and mail from as far away as Fairbanks AK. It takes all kinds. Having quality people in ones life to be able to share when the times are less then positive is always very important., Dealing with non supportive Don't isolate keep up with the positive folks Leave situations that are uncomfortable. Be assertive but don't be insane. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Hicks tomh@halcyon.com GLU - Gay Lesbian University/Seattle anonymous ftp halcyon.com /pub/GLU POB 20771 Seattle,WA 98102 206-323-7483 F I G H T B A C K W I T H T E C H N O L O G Y ----------------------------------------------------------------
