Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn't Fit LESBIANS, GAYS MARCH IN IRELAND By Leslie Feinberg The pride of the Irish is alive in Dublin this year, if not in New York City. As they have for the last several years, organizers of Dublin's St. Patrick's Day parade have extended an invitation to lesbians and gay men to march, reports David Reilly in New York's Irish Echo newspaper. The 24th annual parade, organized by the government agency Dublin Tourism, will include a colorful float honoring the National Lesbian and Gay Federation. New York City's gay and lesbian Irish were blocked again this year by right-wing parade organizers--the Ancient Order of the Hibernians--whose reactionary position was buttressed by the summits of the Catholic Church hierarchy. But the official in charge of Dublin's parade, Deirdre Judge, said: "We're more open to all sorts of things here in Ireland. You might say the people in New York seem to be a bit narrow-minded." Michael Dillon, secretary of NLGF, agreed. "The decision of Dublin Tourism to allow the NLGF to take part in the national holiday shows a level of maturity and openness sadly lacking in the Ancient Order of Hibernians in New York," he told the Dublin Gay Community News. -30- (Copyright Workers World Service: Permission to reprint granted if source is cited.
