I have updated it slightly. If Braddlee is still on Gaynet are you still maintaining the list? If anyone knows of any corrections, deletions or additions to this list please tell me and I'll try to keep it all updated. It may well (no, is pretty much certain to) contain errors and omissions. It's not intended to be a complete how-to guide, but some guidelines/tips are included. Since I currently pay cash money for my forwarding my Internet e-mail through Compuserve, I regret that I'm unable to respond to individual requests for copies of this list, due to the expense involved. Suggestions for ftp archive sites are welcome. When possible, I have sent test messages to these lists, or have stolen addresses from lists more authoritative than this. Revisions and new listings for this version are noted in the header for each listing. I've tried to note exceptions from standard form where appropriate. Unfortunately, there are few guarantees in life, and even fewer in e-mail. Caveat emptor. -- MAILING LISTS First, a couple of general pointers: (Ignore quotation marks and periods before/after commands and addresses.) 1) For Internet mailing lists, the convention is to have a listname-request account to handle administrivia. You can save yourself loss-of-face by using the -request address to subscribe/unsubscribe, etc., rather than posting to the entire list. Posting administrivia wastes network resources by uselessly propagating your request to hundreds of people who don't care. No one will shoot you for it, but it's not stylish. On automated lists, it creates unnecessary work for volunteer list administrators, who must then process your request manually. Internet addresses look like this: Listname@node.site.domain 2) BITNET mailing lists are often (but not always) run by an automated mailing program called LISTSERV. When subscribing to a LISTSERV list, send a message to LISTSERV@HOST (where site is the specific Bitnet host). LISTSERV lists often have names with an "-L" extension, like "Bisexu-L@brownvm." Again, try not to post subscription requests to the entire list. One correct form for the message is the following: "sub listname your_name." To get off the list, send the same listserv the message: "signoff listname." LISTSERV doesn't intuit, so if you do something wrong, it will grump at you. Don't take it personally. Keeping your original subscription acknowledgement message will save time and tears when trying to post to or unsubscribe from a list. BITNET address look like this: Listname@listhost 3) UUCP mailing lists. At this point, many lists at UNIX hosts can be reached by their "Internet style" addresses (ie: unixbox@foo.bar.blah) via UUCP. Anyone who knows more about UUCP than I do is welcome to explain the dubious joys of bang mail addressing. If you're at a UNIX site, ask your administrator, if you're not at a UNIX site, ask your administrator (See, that was easy...). bangmail addresses look like this: here!there!them 4) Gateways. If you are on network X and want to subscribe to a list on network Y, you may have to engage in some gyrations. See the Inter-network-mail-guide, or Frey and Adams (in Bibliography) for help - or contact your local mail gurus on finding/using gateways between networks. These change, so don't be shocked if information is obsolete. Many Internetters can fake bitnet addresses by adding ".bitnet" to the bitnet address (i.e.; listname@listserv.host.bitnet). If you're at a BITNET site, there should be someone officially designated to know BITNET stuff, like where the nearest/best gateway is. UUCP people get to have fun with maps... Okay, here we go... Some Internet/ BITNET discussion groups are gatewayed onto USENET, and vice-versa. USENET discussions are organized into newsgroups (of which there are hundreds). There are several official domains in USENET: comp, rec, misc, talk, soc, news - and some unofficial ones, the best known being alt. USENET also supports regional distribution domains, such as ba (Bay Area, Calif.) and uk (United Kingdom). USENET comes to you. If you are at a site that carries a USENET feed, you can access news by running a local news reader program, such as rn. If you don't have access to a UNIX system with news, one alternative is subscribing to a "public access" UNIX site. The Well (415-332-7190 [login:newuser], 415-332-4335 [voice]) carries the full USENET feed, and is reasonably priced ($10/mo. and $2/hr). The semi-official list of public access UNIX sites (nixpub) is available from lgnp1 (215-348-9727) (login:guest), and may help you find what you need. (nixpub is also posted to USENET, but that won't do you much good if you're not on the net...) Many USENET sites do not carry alt, regional, and other "non-official" newsgroups because of the cost of carrying/ storing them. If you're desperate to get on alt.sex.bestiality, and it's not carried on your system, try a public access UNIX site. * soc.motss Members Of The Same Sex. A high-volume (and often rowdy) international discussion. Big soapbox, many flamethrowers. Note: I've been told by several people there is a gateway for posting _to_ soc.motss for persons on "read only" news systems via soc-motss@ucbvax.berkeley.edu. I've tried this and the -request variation, and the mail has been returned as undeliverable. * alt.politics.homosexuality Political discussion of homosexuality. You get the idea. * clari.news.group.gays This is part of Clarinet, a commercial subscription service carried by some Usenet sites. Carries UPI newswire stories relating to lesbian/gay issues. * soc.feminism Open to both m/f, moderated discussion of feminist issues (not necessarily lesbian-feminist) * ba.motss Bay Area (CA) motss - regional newsgroup. * ne.motss (New listing) Same concept - New England. * rec.arts.bodyart tatoos, piercing, etc. * alt.sex.bondage self-explanatory, n'est ce pas? -- OTHER GROUPS This category contains systems that may or may not be connected to the Internet/BITNET/USENET/UUCP universe, but might be of interest. CompuServe CI$ supports several gay forums. Two live in the Human Sexuality Forum (HSX-100 [general], and HSX-200 [adult]), another is in the National Issues Forum (ISSUESFORUM). (Try FIND GAY online.) The CompuServe CB Simulator has channels that are primarily gay, and one for TV's, TS's, and friends. There is an e-mail link to the Internet (send and receive mail - no telnet/ftp). A new pricing policy is making CIS more competitive with less comprehensive services. The WELL The 'Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link' is a good alternative to higher priced commercial systems. The WELL carries the complete USENET feed, and has a gay conference (g gay), and an AIDS conference (g aids) on the system. See NEWSGROUPS (above) for contact information. Can be reached through the CompuServe network (add $3/hr.), and has an e-mail link to the Internet. (See mention of WER, below, under Periodicals.) Prodigy Prodigy has suppressed motss-related discussions, and removed a conference that was the site of a fractious debate between gays and fundamentalist Christians. There have been valid complaints regarding censorship. I'd spend my money elsewhere. It's about what you'd expect of an information system run by Sears. No gateways. Fidonet Fidonet is a store-and-forward network for PC-BBS's. There are national "echomail" conferences that are lesbigaytrans* related, but I don't have any good information on them. There is a Fidonet/Internet mail gateway. (See PC-BBS listings below.) PC-BBS's (Revised listing) There are skidillions of local BBS's, many of which are gay oriented. Some are networked via Fidonet or Gaycom or other store-and-forward networks, and some are accessible via Starlink or PC-Pursuit. A good national list of functioning BBS's (not necessarily gay) is available from the P.D.S.L.O. BBS at (516) 938-6722. _Boardwatch Magazine_ runs a BBS (303-973-4222) which carries information on BBS's across the country. Some other places to start are _28 Barbary Lane_ (Seattle WA) (206) 525-2828, _The BackRoom_ (718) 849-1616 (GayCom) (Richmond Hill, NY), GLIB (703) 578-4542 (Arlington, VA), Long Island (NY) Lambda (516) 467-5204, Anev BBS (503) 686-0951 (FIDO Node 1:152/7) Eugene, OR, Bill 'n' Bob's (216) 741-5888 (Cleveland, OH), and Fog City (415) 863-9697 (FIDO node 125/10) (San Francisco). All numbers are DATA, not voice. BITNET Relay/Internet Relay (Revised) Real-time group discussions via network e-mail. Bitnet Channel 333 is lesbian/gay/bi. See BITNET Userhelp (Bibliography) for some basic Bitnet Relay instructions. Sorry, but I don't know much else about this. -- ET CETERA.... (Revised) Additions, corrections, and constructive suggestions are welcome. They may be addressed to me via either of the following addresses: braddlee@ucs.indiana.edu [best] (or) 76557.1312 (compuserve). This is a revised version of a list first posted in Feb 1991.
