cole slaw salt lake's only anarchist weekly Coveting it's ports and strategic location, imperialist powers first carved up the horn of Africa in the nineteenth century. more than a century of colonial rule, of third world exploitation, of cultural genocide, imposed political structures and agricultural practices has led to the ecological destruction, widespread famine and violence plaguing Somalia today. during that century Somalia enjoyed independence only once. Somalia won its independence from Italy and Britain and were able to control their own lives until 1969 when Maj- Gen Mohammed Siad Barre led an army coup, suspended the country's constitution and dissolved the legislature. the Soviet Union armed Siad Barre's regime and East Germany trained his secret police and paramilitary forces. in 1977 Siad Barre switched from Soviet to U.S. clientdom. presidents Carter and Reagan funneled almost a billion dollars in weapons into the country and provided logistical backup in Siad Barre's attacks on northern towns, which, with the help of South Africa bomber pilots, slaughtered some 150,000 Somalis. U.S. support for the client regime in Somalia continued until Siad Barre's fall in january of 1991. Since then the country has been torn back and forth by a handful of warlords, representing the merchants and the ruling class of Somalia. In the last year the Somalia National Movement in the north has grown in numbers and political strength, U.N. special envoy Mohamed Sahnoun worked to give Somalis control of their country and by october '92 the power of the warlords was visibly eroding, the clan leaders were able to insure safe delivery and distribution of most relief (U.N. reported 80% loss of relief, save the children, red cross, and Somali relief workers were seeing 5-10% loss, standard for relief work), and Somalia saw the heaviest rains it has seen in years, the drought in Somalia was over, and the people of Somali were closer to self determination than they had been since 1969. send in the troops. Since the invasion and occupation of Somalia by U.S. troops began, the country's most powerful warlords have stepped up fighting, vying for power and U.S. support, casting their bid for the chance to become the country's next puppet dictator. this increased violence has driven many international relief agencies out of Somalia and forced Somali relief workers to abandon the field, leaving the U.N. and its pawns as the only relief agencies able to work in the country. unlike the Somali relief effort and relief agencies like save the children, which often did forays into the bush to take food where it was most needed, the U.N. efforts work through famine "camps", armed enclaves, fenced in compounds without adequate water or sewage facilities, where disease runs rampant and death rates are usually five times or more higher than in the surrounding villages. these death camps ultimately kill more people than they save. in addition to fucking up relief efforts, the U.S. military presence has, I'm sure, been accompanied by the rises in prostitution and rape that seem to follow our armed forces wherever they go. this alone is sufficient argument against U.S. intervention anywhere, ever. Somalia occupies a strategic position on the horn of Africa, it's military and trade value for that reason is sufficient to provoke such strong U.S. interest, the country is also being turned into an international dumping ground for toxic wastes, as italian companies dump into the Indian ocean and begin building incinerators in Somalia. But the deciding factor in the white house's push for invasion and occupation of Somalia was, that's right, oil. in the last days before Siad Barre's fall, nearly two thirds of the country was allocated to four U.S. oil companies, Conoco, Amoco, Chevron and Phillips, but those companies are unable to fully exploit Somalia's resources without a "business-friendly" ruler to work with. Conoco has gone so far as to rent out its corporate compound in Mogadishu to the U.S. government, which has used the office space as a de facto american embassy, with president Bush's special envoy using it as his temporary headquarters during his stay, and the president of the company's subsidiary in Somalia won high official praise for serving as the government's volunteer "facilitator during the months before and during the U.S. invasion. Somalia, like Iraq, is a resource war, an economic war, a war for oil, for military strength and political power. Somalia, like Iraq, once again, is under attack. fuck the corporate dictatorship...no war but the class war...troops out now... for more information or to get involved in the struggle for Somali and Iraqi self determination call cole slaw at 486-7657 ############################### REVOLUTIONARY SUICIDE By having no family I inherited the family of humanity. My womb is not the government's womb, it's my womb, yet once again, like every year, the Utah government reminds me that I do not possess one piece of my body. REPEAL ALL ABORTION LAWS! LeRay Mcallister, the Senator who has introduce new and improved Utah abortion bill for this session has already read the bill to a subcommittee. Monday, feb 1 the bill goes before committee. It is a bill that is similar to the Pennsylvania law approved by the Supreme Court (24 hr. waiting period, mandatory counseling before a woman is allowed to have any "choice" over her body). McAllister has mentioned that the bill might get amended in committee to include mandatory spousal consent. REPEAL NOT REFORM! The liberal groups in Utah want to conform. The democratic legislators are fighting only to scale the law down. Utahns for Choice are politely negotiating with McAllister himself. N.O.W. doesn't even have information on their hotline about the mandatory pregnancy act. WOMEN MUST CONTROL THE MEANS OF REPRODUCTION! I am tired of negotiating involuntary contracts relegating control of my body to the government, I am tired of liberals and feminist groups who only represent middle and upper- class professional white women.
