Human Life International, The Right-Wing, And The Far-Right Human Life International, like many other religious organisations, brings together people from the respectable right-wing all the way to the far-right. Many of its more hateful members' views are discounted as being byproducts of their "religious zeal". However, some of its members have made statements putting them beyond the pale of Canadian political discourse, and the organisation and many of the speakers at the upcoming 14th World Conference on Love, Life and the Family have proven themselves more than willing to work with, accomadate and tolerate members of the far-right internationally. HLI And Dr. Siegfried Ernst HLI's officials claim to abhor fascism, yet their key man in Europe is a fascist. Siegfried Ernt M.D. has been described by Father Paul Marx (HLI's founder and present-day chairman) as "the greatest prolifer in Europe" (Paul Marx ,Confessions of a Prolife Missionary, HLI, page 9). This is what Ernst is on record as saying about the anti-apartheid movement in the 1980s: "Why is there this attitude of degenerated masochism which makes us destroy systematically our own breed and race and which makes us passively watch how our own mental, moral, and biological inheritance is getting wasted and ruined?" (Allgemeine Zeitung, Dr Siegfried Ernst "Apartheid gegen sudafrica", December 9, 1986) During the 1980s Ernst was convinced that the Soviet Union would invade Europe, which he described as being "down the drain" anyway. He suggested to Marx that the two set up a center in Paraguay to "train Christians who would fight back." This Paraguayan center "would aim to save the best of German Christian culture." (Paul Marx, Confessions of a Prolife Missionary, HLI, p.21). For these and other statements Ernst was publicly branded a "neo-fascist" in Germany. When he attempted to sue those who called him this, the judge ruled that the term was appropriate. According to Theresa Bell, executive director of HLI Canada, "Dr Ernst lost the suit, not because the accusations are true, but rather because German laws (much like Canadian and American laws) protect free speech and expression even to the point that unjust and unsubstantiated accusations can with virtual impunity." However, the judge who had ruled on this case was very clear that it was not simply a matter of protection freedom of expression, but rather that "The things he says are so racially discriminating that any impartial observer can see parallels to the ideology of the Third Reich." (Judgement of Judge Dr. Hilgert, of the Amstgericht Cologne, June 1992, 613 Cs 29/92) Ernst is the founder of an anti-choice group called the European Doctors Association. The EDA, like HLI, is at the far-right end of the political spectrum. Thus, one of its co- founders is Father Wolfgang Borowsky, a former member of the Freedom for Rudolph Hess Committee, which fought for the release of the Nazi war criminal. Borowsky has written that "Communism is mainly a creation of Jews." (Wolfgang Borowsky, Kommt Luzifer an die Macht, Aglasterhausen: Bibel- und Schrifrenmission e. V., 1985, p.81), and is fond of quoting from the anti-semitic Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is a leader of Germany's neo-nazi movement. (Der Rechte Rand, August-September 1991, p.19). Apart from his association with Fr. Borowsky, Ernst has also been exposed as a close friend of Manfred Roeder (in Der Spiegel, 1981). Roeder is a leader of the German neo-nazi movement, and has stated that outright violence is the best cure for Germany's ills. He served 9 1/2 years in prison for charges related to the bombing of refugee hostels in 1980 in which two residents were killed, anD has founded several radical right groups. ("Exclusive - Inside Germany's Neo-Nazis", Simon Wiesenthal Center's Report, Summer 1993) Despite all of this, Doctor Siegfried Ernst remains listed in as an "International Advisors" to HLI. Randall Terry Although he is not a Catholic, Human Life International's conferences regularly include speeches by Randall Terry, the founder of the American anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. Terry, like many other allies of HLI, is a Christian Reconstructionist. Unlike most on the Christian Right, who believe that Jesus Christ will return and set up his kingdom on Earth, Reconstructionists believe that "the church must first set up Christ's Kingdom on earth, then Christ will return." ("Profile Chalcedon"Freedom Writer January 1995). According to R.J. Rushdoony, the "father of Reconstructionism", democracy is a heresy. Reconstructionists also believe that Biblical law must be imposed on society, and accept that this means the death penalty, preferable by public stoning, for those who practice homosexuality, witchcraft, adultery, incorrigible delinquency by youth, and even blasphemy. ("Dominion Theology" by Sara Diamond, Z Magazine, February 1995). Terry will speak at the upcoming 14th World Conference on Love, Life and the Family. At the April 1994 Human Life International conference in Irvine, California, Terry explained that "We need to preach the law and we need to say unashamedly that our goal is a Christian Nation... We can't have it both ways: either God has called us to extend His law over all the earth, or he hasn't." Terry also stated that God "has called us to extend his law to unbelievers." He concluded, "America is going to enter the next millenium in convulsions. We are going to see turmoil and disruption that will make the Civil War look civil. It's going to be a horrifying time and it's the judgement of God." ("Extremism and Anti-Semitism at HLI: A Rogues' Gallery", by Karen Branan and Frederick Clarkson, Front Lines Research Vol. 1 #1, June 1994) Other statements by Randall Terry: "If you think abortion is murder, act like it." (as reported in US News and World Report November 14th, 1994) "We've found the weak link is the doctor... we're going to expose them. We're going to humiliate them." (New York Times, November 3rd, 1993) "...Randall Terry appeared on Christian radio stations earlier this week to assail a Boulder (Colorado) doctor... 'I hope someday he is tried for crimes against humanity, and I hope he is executed", Mr Terry said. "I make no bones about it friends, it is a biblical part of Christianity that we pay for either the conversion or the judgement of the enemies of God.'" (New York Times, August 14th, 1993) "Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry told pro-lifers Saturday night at a Ft. Wayne (Indiana) church to 'let a wave of intolerance wash over you. I want you to let a wave of hatred wash over you. Yes, hate is good.'" (Ft. Wayne News-Sentinel, August 16th, 1993) While Terry has credibility within the American Right, his actions and public positions place him well beyond the pale of acceptable political discourse in Canada. Since 1994 Terry has been active in the U.S. Taxpayers' Party, a far-right party operating on the political fringe. At gatherings of the USTP Terry has called for a return to biblical "patriarchy" and for the criminilization of homosexuality ("Randall Terry and the U.S. Taxpayers Party", by John Goetz, Front Lines Research August 1994). Other officials with the USTP include: Reverend Matthew Trehella, a member of the USTP National Committee from Wisconsin, who signed Paul Hill's Defensive Action statement in favour of lethal force. Trewhella, who leads an anti-choice group called Missionaries to the Pre-Born, has called for the formation of armed "militias" by Christians. Jeffrey Baker, the chairman of USTP of Florida, who has stated that "abortionists should be put to death." Reverend Michael Bray, a USTP promoter, who also signed Paul Hill's Defensive Action statement. Bray served four years in federal prison for sonspiring to bomb 10 abortion clinics in 1984. ("Md. couple in Supreme Court clinic bombing case go on fighting abortion" Baltimore Sun, October 14, 1991, p.3A) Father Paul Marx In 1981 Paul Marx founded Human Life International in Washinton D.C. He has remained active in the organisation ever since, presently being its chairman. He regularly speaks at HLI events, and will be speaking at the 14th World Conference on Love, Life and Family. Father Marx is also one of the most outspoken anti-semites associated with the organisation. Here are some quotes from the chapter "Pro-Abortion Jews and the New Holocaust" in his autobiography, Confessions of a Prolife Missionary: "The same segment of the Jewish community that accuses the Pope of insensitivity to the Jewish Holocaust not only condones but has more or less led the greatest holocaust of all time, the war on unborn babies." (page 268) "It is high time that someone remind these pro-abortionists that there is a holocaust going on that dwarves even the horrible Jewish one, taking 50 million lives every year worldwide." (page 268) "Pro-abortion Jews are prominent among TV/radio/movie executives, authors, columnists... and so on." (page 271) "In Canada the leading abortion advocate and chief killer of unborn babies is Henry Morgentaler, who claims to have been in Auschwitz..." (page 272) "Currently, prominent Jews are among the chief exponents of euthanasia in Germany, Austria and Holland." (page 272) "Until recently, the real political power in Austria was in the hands of a fanatically pro-abortion Prime Minister, Bruno Kreisky, an atheist of Jewish descent... Although they are supremely sensitive about their own Holocaust, Austria's Jews gave me and my colleagues no help in stopping this new holocaust; on the contrary, they spoke eloquently for killing preborn babies" (page 272) "Among the chief crusaders for abortion in England, too, were prominent Jews. And I learned, in Buenos Aires, that leaders of Argentina's two-and-one-half million Jews were pressing for school sex education, which always includes contraception and (subtly) abortion." (page 272-273) "But again, Jews who are pro-abortion must face up to their role in the greatest holocaust in all history, the abortion holocaust. They should also reflect on the turth that there have been other and even larger holocausts, e.g. the worst of all (tens of millions) in Red China under Mao; the Soviets' planned starvation of the Ukrainians (9 million), the 20 million Russians and 6.3 million Poles who lost their lives at the hands of Hitler; and others." (page 273) Marx's admiration for German neo-fascist Doctor Siegfried Ernst is described elsewhere. Apart from respecting German fascists like Ernst, Marx has also been quite clear about what he sees going on in Europe: "Moslems are taking over Western Europe, if you are not a friend of Allah, you're an enemy... they will kill you to please Allah." ("Extremism and Anti-Semitism at HLI: A Rogues' Gallery", by Karen Branan and Frederick Clarkson, Front Lines Research Vol. 1#1, June 1994) Marx has also stated that Turkish Moslem doctors make money from performing abortions on German women for their own large families. This racist concern with "Christian babies" and "our" birthrate spill over into other areas, too. In an interview with the Minneapolis Star in the 1980s centering on his fear that "the white Western world is committing suicide", he explained his fears thus: "I guess we have 250,000 Vietnamese here already, and they are going to have large families; the Orientals always do. God knows how many Mexicans cross the border every night... And if we ever have to fight the Russians, I wonder if these people will be willing to stake their lives." (quoted in "Women's Rights: Target for Racist Terror", by Michael Novick, People Against Racist Terror 1993) (Most of the information was based upon the excellent research done by Planned Parenthood.
