Heritage Front Leader On Trial

On Monday, February 20, 1995, Toronto neo-Nazi leader Wolfgang
Droege goes to trial for assaulting an anti-racist activist.

     He and his henchman Peter Mitrevski were arrested after a
fight with anti-racists in the early morning hours of June 12,
1993. Droege was charged with aggravated assault and possession
of weapons dangerous; Mitrevski also faces weapons charges.
     Wolfgang Droege has been active within the neo-Nazi movement
in North America for more than a decade. Throughout his violent
career as a fascist organizer, he has served time in U.S. prison
for his role in planning an armed invasion of the Caribbean
nation of Dominica with fellow members of various Ku Klux Klan
and neo-Nazi groups. He was also been convicted of cocaine
trafficking.
     More recently, he was jailed in Canada for violating a court
order prohibiting him from operating a telephone hateline while
the Heritage Front Hateline was being investigated by the Ontario
Human Rights Commission. The complaint against the Hateline had
been brought by the Native Canadian Centre. Last spring the
Commission ruled that the Hateline had indeed slandered First
Nations people.
     Droege and others try to present the Heritage Front as an
"white rights" group, much like ex-Klansman David Duke's National
Association for the Advancement of White People. But since its
founding in 1989, the Front has shown its true colours as a
violent racist outfit. The influence of the Heritage Front has
resulted in numerous attacks against people of colour, Jewish
people, gays and lesbians, women and anti-racists.
     We encourage all community activists to come out to show
support to the anti-racist who was assaulted by Wolfgang Droege
on June 12, 1993. We have a chance to outnumber Droege's racist
followers at the courts, and to remind them that the community
will not be indifferent to them, and will not be intimidated by
their presence in our city. Even after two years, the community
remembers these assaults and we aren't ready to give up any space
to neo-nazis or racists of any description!

Proceedings start at 9:00 a.m. at the courthouse at 361
University Avenue (just north of Queen, on the east side of
University). The courtroom number will be posted at the
information desk that morning.
