GRIST On-Line will include reprints from early issues, new work by the original contributors, and work by new and emerging writers and artists. GRIST On-Line will emphasize poetry and poetics; the poetry and poetics of electronic publishing; e-mail art; interactive poetry; multimedia poetry; virtual poetry; language poetry; poetry on diskette and CD; and the impact on style and content of these new media and forms of distribution. The primary purpose of GRIST On-Line will be the electronic/network/bbs publication, distribution and archiving of significant poems by contemporary writers. "The original GRIST issued from the Abington Book Shop in Lawrence, Kansas", Fowler explained. "We ran 14 issues from 1964 to 1967. Charlie Plymell and George Kimball were co-editors and we published a wide range of poets and graphic artists including Allen Ginsberg, David Ignatow, Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, Frank O'Hara, Jerome Rothenberg, David Antin, Ken Irby, and Robert Bly, as well as the drawings of S. Clay Wilson and other graphics and photographs of the era." GRIST On-Line will be available at its primary Internet ftp site etext.archive.umich.edu. Those with Internet access will be able to view or download the contents of any issue to their personal computer. It will also appear on other ftp sites, Gophers, BBSs and commercial and non-commercial networks. The magazine will be promoted throughout the world-wide electronic network with announcements, review copies and exchanges. Non-electronic promotion activities will include direct mail, small press and magazine advertising, interviews, benefits, readings and participation in book fairs, presentations and special programs. GRIST On-Line will be published monthly, with occasional special issues devoted to a particular author or topic. Standard electronic publication copyright, ISSN, all rights revert to author, free download and reproduction and free distribution of complete issues properly credited will apply. "Initially GRIST On-Line will be straightforward in terms of layout and presentation. As graphic, hypertext and interactive capabilities become an everyday reality on the net they will be added," Fowler said. A very limited, DTP paper edition will be available and will contain material unique to that edition. "GRIST-On Line will be open to and will actively solicit MSS submissions from the Internet/BBS electronic community. But we also hope to bring active, professional poets into that community to make them aware of the tremendous potential that these new production and publishing tools offer. Our goal is to provide an international gathering place for dedicated, contemporary e-poets and e-mail artists," Fowler explained. Electronic submissions of poems, essays, articles, reviews and requests for electronic subscriptions should be sent to fowler@phantom.com; hardcopy, diskette submissions in ASCII, and hardcopy subscription inquiries should be sent to John Fowler, GRIST On-Line, 17 W. 64th St #2E, New York, NY 10023-6710.
