PUNK, $1, Darren, 318 Clinton St., Toronto, Ont., M6G 2Y8. A pleasant surprise. An old school punk's coming to terms with himself, the world, and his place in it....and he's only 26! THE TEEN SCENE #54, $3, Blair Buscareno, 34 Highland Cross, #2, Rutherford, NJ, 07070. Email: blairb1@gramercy.ios.com. Superb indie rock zine with a slant for things 60s. Great story on the Muffs/Queers/cub tour on the US East coast plus LOTS more! Tons of reviews and addresses. UGLY THINGS #14, $6, Mike Stax, 405 W. Washington St., #237, San Diego, CA, 92103. JACKPOT! 108 pages of incredible 60s/70s punk/raw energy information. Articles on The Misfits, Pretty Things, Crime & over 20 pages of CD/LP reviews including a comprehensive look at all the MC 5 CDs that have been spewing out lately. Editor Mike Stax used to be in The Crawdaddys, Tell-Tale Hearts, and most recently The Hoods (did you see them at The Hungry Eye?), so he definitely knows what time it is. If you are serious about dirty unintelligible 60s music, this is the bible. I cannot praise this publication enough. SKIN PHANTOM, $2, Michael Betzler, 729 18th Ave. NW, Calgary, AB, T2M 0V2. Really cool little mini-comic kind of like Steve Ditko meets Josie & The Pussycats. I know this sounds like a wild combination, and it is! BEAT BOOKS AND STUFF, Water Row Books, Box 438, Sudbury, MA, 01776. Email: Waterrow@aol.com. If it has anything to do with Beatniks (videos, recordings, books, etc.), this is the mail-order catalog for you. I bought the Whitney Museum Beat Exhibit Book from them and it showed up with no hassles. Tell them I sent you and ask for the Kerouac bookmark. UNDERDOG ZINE #11, $1, 2252 N. Elston Ave., 2nd Floor, Chicago, IL, 60614. Email: udogrec@interaccess.com. In addition to being a label catalog, this is also a pretty cool punk resource guide (this issue has lots of Internet punk info). Articles on the Chicago scene round things out. BLUE ROSES, #4, $2, Box 40674, Portland, OR, 97240. The girl who edits this is young, does not list her name, but she's got a lot to say about relationships with girls, with boys, helplessness, self-hatred, anorexia, valuing girls' friendships and more. In fact, she's drawn a little diagram of all the above to help you through her zine. Intensely personal and private, hand-written and photocopied...it is completely captivating and beautiful. PERFECT WASTE OF TIME, one stamp or $1, Victoria Stanton, Box 42020, Montreal, Quebec, H2W 2T3. A monthly sheet of opinion & information on the Montreal lit scene. PWOT is also an indie publisher, so don't forget to ask for a catalog of their audio/print works. VELCROW, 25c + postage or trade, Lisa, 7078 Estoril Rd., Mississauga, ONT, L5N 1N4. Email:rainbow@infinity_online.com. Another neat little grrl oriented zine; reviews, Kinder chocolate surprises, and just a nice little happy glow all around. I like it when people are nice, don't you? MAISON DE LA POESIE, 161 rue Saint Martin, 75003, Paris, France. Beautifully designed program book for this theatre's poetry season. Write a nice letter and I'm sure they'll gladly mail you one. Worked for me. PEREZVON PLAYS DEAD, $1, Daniel Fortine, 219 C, 1st Avenue North, Seattle, WA, 98109. Nicely done zine of poetry, comics, personal anecdotes and stuff by the 26 year old editor/artist. Worth it for the great 4 page insert/review of all cool Seattle coffee spots. Close to 60 pages of punk/indie articles, reviews and more. Kind of in-between Flipside and MRR. BUNYON, $3, 317A Cambie St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 2N4. I really don't know how to describe this except, well, let's say you went to a party and the weirdest guy there suddenly decided to be your friend and came over and drew comics about his body parts, and showed you his hand-written diary about EVERYTHING he did that day, and told you he loved you because you're such a good listener and, hey, were you going to finish your beer, because if you don't want it, he'll finish it for you. And then his girlfriend came over and told him it was time to go. Well...uh...that's BUNYON. SOCKAMAGEE! #3, $2, Steve Richards, 2037 Stainsbury Ave., Vancouver, BC, V5N 2M9. Email: sock@portal.ca. Eclectic is the word here. An appreciation of schlock music meister James Last is equal billing with an article on Nico, plus Colin Upton comics, fond memories of The Gong Show, cult movies and live music reviews.
