Okay, so these are a little late, but still. You can get a paper copy of fucktooth from me for $2 at: Jen angel, POB 3593, Columbus OH 43210 thanks! One last hint for ordering zines and music : order direct from the band, label, or zine whenever you can. They see the most money that way. Also, many thanks to Carl Hirsch, Pat Jones, Bill Reidy, Andy Bussing, and JR. Yeah, now you know who to blame. * This is very important. Fucktooth is Not Maximum Rock N Roll or =46actsheet Five. There is a possibility that the zine or record you send me may not be reviewed. As much as i don't want this to happen, it has come down to a matter of how much space i'm devoting to reviews more than anything else. Plus, i don't have the time to review zines 24 hours a day, i mean, i've got to stop and eat and take showers and things. Please don't take it personally. 10 Things #11: 1407 NE 45th St #17, Seattle WA 98105, ten@u.washington.edu // Free in the Northwest, $2ppd, full size, color cover, 72pgs // This is a good zine, but sometimes i feel hesitant to call it a zine becuase it's so impersonal. Yeah, all the people who work at it are cool, and Dan and David must put a lot into it, but it isn't the kind of zine that you can get a total overall feeling from. I guess it's meant to be that way, coz it mainly focuses on music, though they have been getting more and more columns lately. THat's a good thing because the commentary is usually right on, i just hope they don't fall into the MRR lookalike trap. I really like how this zine is very supportive of the local scene, and overall, very positive. We need zines like this. #11 has interviews with Dennison Kimball Trio, Steveggs, Laughing Hyenas, Sinkhole, Cows, Screw 32, The Fallouts, and Fireworks and tons of columns, scene reports, and reviews. Though the zine reviews were a little confusing. (Angel). Active Transformation #5, Spring 1995: POB 6476, East Lansing, MI 48826 // tabloid, newsprint, 16 pgs, free // Wow! Jam packed with local midwest news and information, plus topics from around the nation and the world, like Proposition 187 and the EZLN/Zapitistas. I'm impressed with the quality and diversity of information here. This is the kind of activist newspaper that every area/city needs, to report the stories that the newspapers ignore. This is not nearly as intimidating as Fifth Estate, the other midwest paper, also from Michigan. (Angel). Boys In Trouble on the Interstate #5: Jeremy Reuter, POB 8054 Austin TX 78713-8054 // 8 x 7, 48 pgs, 50=A2?/trade // I love this zine. When i read Boys, i feel like i'm reading an issue of Fucktooth. That's so cool because it means that we place importance on the same things and go about things in the same way. There's so much here! Local scene reports and contact information of all kinds, the national listing of contacts for shows that jeremy is maintaining (very ambitious undertaking - he's done it well), a "diary sorta" that just lists a bunch of personal thoughts and observations about life. I found these to be the best reading, very thought provoking and made me smile coz i've thought those same things too, cool stuff to do in Austin (like swimming!). There's also vegetarian/vegan info, classifieds, travel stories. There are a few articles by other people, but Jeremy's stuff is teh best! I talked to Jeremy the other day, and i think he was right on when he said that Boys is like "FUcktooth Jr." though i would really say the brother of fucktooth or something. Look for a possible split issue next year! (Angel). Breakdown #3: Michael Thorn, 13 S Lancaster, Athens OH 45701 // half size, 42 pgs, free? // Easy to read, but Jeez, kind of a downer. Angst and Apathy filled articles on life, love, politics, and hardcore. If you're into that emo/h.c. thang you'd probably dig this. My advice would just be to lighten up, dude. (JR). Broken Routine: punk rawk fanzine #2, June 1995: POB 1395, Santa Rosa CA 95402 // $2ppd, half size, red cover, 80pgs // The first editorial in this issue, by Scott, is SO good that i almost reprinted it here, in fucktooth. It talks mostly about community, identity, punk rock and all of that, and makes some really good points about how a community functions and points out at least two of the different ideas of a (punk rock) community: punk is about making a better life for yourself, or it's a political vehical that is used to bring about change, for the better, for everyone involved. Anyway, there's a lot more than that in the article. So i was really optimistic about this zine, until i realized that the rest is ALL about punk, Maximum, and santa rosa bands like the Process, ,Masturbation, the Invalids, etc. Scene gossip and local stuff is good - but only to some extent. I'm glad that Scott is really positive about where he lives and he is helping support ideas like the Independent Arts Coalition, but there's more to life than punk and Santa Rosa. (Angel). Burping Lula #4: Pob 14735 Richmond VA 23221 // 8.5 x 7, 16 pgs, free (send stamps) // Bim Ska La Bim interview, a couple of entertaining articles, and lots of someone eclectic reviews. (JR). Canvas #9.5 "The Spring Cleaning Issue!" : Jamie Kennard, 2176 Turk Hill Road, Fairport NY 14450 // half size, 28 pages, $1 cash or stamps // The one word that could some up Canvas is honest. Some excellent personal type columns, a few okay but bordering on bad ones, lots of reviews of all kinds. Never elitist or pretentious, always a safe return on your dollar. (Angel). Catch 22: Ryan Matlock, 4915 Erie PA 16510 // half size, 36 pgs, $1 ppd // Okay. There are some things that i really like about this issue, like the Libertarianism primer, and the contact info. I also admire Ryan's attempt to "fuck shit up" and mess with the governmetn and corporations, but that's what pissed me off the most. The schemes he printed, while funny and more like pranks then anything else, will do little to fuck with the state. They all boil down to doing stupid shit that a peon worker (much like ryan, his friends and peers, myself included) who is forced into a minimum wage job will have to either clean up or deal with. This includes fucking with waiters/cashiers and people who are just trying to do their job, and that really pisses me off. I hate it when people don't think through their actions. Also included are a bunch of not very in depth how-to's, and a few opinion articles of mostly political nature. Ryan needs to get away from single spacing everything because it's very hard to read. (Angel). chunklet 9 // mini, weird packaging, 84 pages, printed, $1ppd? // This zine has to be seen to be believed! Issue number Nine comes in a "doggie bag" (looks like and airplane barf bag) and is the PET ISSUE. You got it, lots and lots about pets. This is one zine that tries to be funny and makes it. =46ind out about your favorite band's pets, read letters from frustrated animals, and hear all about Heimlich's animal experiences since early child hood. Couldn't be complete without the Tortoise interview, and also included are lots of record, show, and zine reviews. I don't know how he does it, but this is an awesome zine. The most important thing i can say about Chunklet is that it's consistently original. (Angel). Duhhh issue 6: Anthony P, POB HP72, Leeds, LS6 1XT England UK // half size, glossy cover, $2?, 40pgs // Okay, the theme of this issue is the meaning of life. As always, there are some really excellent columns, and some moderate to uninteresting ones. Lots of differnet people's opinions, the most interesting column discusses ascetism vs sensualism, and then there's one that goes over ways to make you're life fuller and happier (like avoiding repetition and questing for immortality) that i also liked. Lots of reviews, a Voor Hees interview, and various other things make this worth reading. (Angel). enema #4 : Pete Menchetti, POB 204 Reno NV 89504 // tabloid, newsprint, 16pgs, 75=A2 // This issue has lots of columns, pete's thoughts, letters, good comics, interviews with ANti Flag, Unconquered, Zoinks! and The Gain, a pretty interesting "reader's poll" and a bunch of reviews. Some of the columns are bad (uninteresting) but i like Pete's a lot, mostly because i think he's really grown as a writer and can express himself well. And i don't know why he always gives me shit about not reviewing enema, coz he never reviews fucktooth. (angel). En La Casa Del Hombre, distibuted by Banco De Ideas Z, Calle 19 No. 1362 apto 15 e/ 24 y 26 Vedado, HABANA 4 cp 10400 CUBA // printed on rad brown rough stock paper 32pps I have no idea on the price. // This taxed my meager Espanol chops, but it' s a collection of the poetry of Luis Rafael Hernandez with illustrations added. The art is nice, it seems to complement the words well. Of course, the words are almosst completely incomprehensible to me. But anyway, the themes covered include prison, obssession, intospection, stuff like that. Running an artist's collective in Cuba is something that I'd imagine to be pretty rough going. (carl) Enter Title Here Vol 4 Issue #2: Greg Jarvela, POB 14, Vienna OH 44473 // =46ull size, 25pgs? $1 // I must admit that it took me a while to pick up this magazine and actually read it, because the cover and layout are less than eye-catching. But when I did finallyr ead it, Boy was i glad! (Even though it throws off my entire theory of visual titilation and gratification being more important than actual content). Greg's sarcastic, wise-ass style is a breath of fresh air compared to the all-too-common upity, PC Punkers and zine editors (you know who you are). ETH is chock-full of intelligent, entertaining articles without any pointless filler. Thorough music and zine reviews, plus over 20 B movie reviews. More than worth your dollar. (JR) Habitual freak: Cari // // // THe only thing i would suggest is that she list resources or let the reader, in some way, know where she gets all her statistics from. (Angel). Left Wing ANti Authoritarian Clip Art #5, Spring 1995: c/o Jackalope 2118 Central Ave SE #144 Albuquerque NM 87106 // full size, 24 one sided pages, $1? // This is great! This guy has collected bits of art from left wing type publications since 1988 all into one little packet. Need some art for that women's rally flyer? or that ANti Racism Fest? You'll find it here. =46un to look at (You'll recognize quite a few of the symbols and things in here) and almost essential for those of us who aren't artistically inclined. (Angel). MAKE ROOM #4:Typo 3118 keller temple, tx 76504 // 50=A2 ppd, half size // well i certainly enjoyed the bimbo with exposed breastage on the cover. i did not, however, enjoy the coy "if you've read any of the previous issues, then you should know who this is" (i.e. the person on the cover) message on the inside front cover. but anyway, the rest of this zine is pretty standard stuff: reviews of vinyl and zines, some opinion pieces by the author and his friends, interviews with GALS PANIC and the 1,4,5s. some of it (like the tips on hotwiring airplanes) is pretty cool but it's not nearly worth wading through editor typo's limbaugh-induced, 2-dimensional spew about how men are being persecuted by the feminist movement. pass... (jones). Mutant Renegade Zine #5 "The Sex Issue": Grog, POB 3445, Dayton OH 45401, grogfen@delphi.com // full size, 28 pgs, $1.50 ppd // As I read this on a plane from Columbus to Chicago, the woman next to me kept looking up from her Danielle Steel novel to drool over MRZ's SEXEE layout and SEXEE articles. Most of the articles are funny and entertaining, with a few great, more serious, personal columns thrown in. Includes poetry, reviews, and probably as good a "Shudder to Think" interview as you can have. Give up three cans of soda or a pack of Basics, and fucking buy it. (JR) OUT OF THE VORTEX #7: Sarah: p.o. box 4619 gaithersburg, MD 20885 // 8x7, 40pgs? $1? // very little here for males (which makes me wonder why jen gave this to me but what the fuck...) but for women there's a lot of genuinely good stuff here. sure some of it is your standard "guys suck" ultra-fem ammo but most of it goes beyond that. articles, stories and reviews, nice clean layout but it not slick or anything like that. they're unabashed supporters of riot grrrl (which sometimes ticks me off) but it seems like the editors have good heads on their shoulders and lots of ideas of their own. the only thing i didn't like about this zine was the poetry. (jones). PMS: Rik, POB 2563, Cambridge MA 02263 // full size, 36 pgs, $2.00 ppd? // I've always said that PMS is one of the best queer zines out there - right up there with Holy Titclamps and Outpunk. This issue is more of a turning inword, and Rik discusses a lot of deeply personal issues involve relationships, sexuality, and life in general. Good interviews/discussions with GB Jones of Fifth Column, Larry Livermore, Ben Weasel, and Matt Wobensmith of Outpunk. Reading the record reviews (quite a few of them) makes me understand that Rik has a really good understanding of music and "the scene."Some lighter stuff like Rik's Travel guide to 23 cities, 83 cool things about boston, and show reviews. Lots of good, honest, political (whether he wants it to be or not) writing. I think that PMS is awesome, and encourage both straight and queer punks to check it out.(Angel). Queer Zine Explosion #12: Larry bob, POB 590488 SF CA 94159-0488, lroberts@bellahs..com // two stamps, half size, 28 pgs// Still the best queer zine resource out there. It lists and reviews queer oriented zines and zines by queers. An essential networking tool,, it also includes a few music and book reviews and other contact/resource information. (Angel). Rip Snap Meow #4: 1188 #4 Port Republic Road, Harrisonburg VA 22801 // 8.5 x 7, 20 pgs, $1 // Hey, not bad, baby. Sparse, clear lay-out, the long free-form article on everything from white trash discrimniation to song lyrics was enterating but I found the small print hard to read (then again, I have a hard time paying attention to anything that doens't jump out in red, white, and blue and bite me on the ass). Interview w/ Band, Coral, ha ha funny cartoons, reviews, and other good stuff. (JR). Roessiger (The zine of the Gods) #5 : Timba, 1323 N 1st Ave, Tucson AZ 85719 // half size, glossy cover, 32 pages, $? // Goddamn! What an awesome zine. I had no idea what i was missing. This zine is so wise ass, sarcastic, and hilarious that i raved about it for a week. Biting sarcasm combined with the unfortuntate victims of Cometbus, Spitboy, MRR, you name it, and Timba and Adam poke fun at it! I mean, you open it up and on the second page you get a list of reviews - based solely on the band's name. I was rolling on the floor! Fake advertisements, puzzles, and some really intelligent cracks on some pretty famous people make this an awesome read. I can see some peole getting really offended with this, but it's not worth it, because they pull it off so well. Definitely recommended. (Angel). Samizdat #2: Dug Song, POB 4296, Ann Arbor MI 48106 // $1, half size, 28pgs // Dug and Greg win! They win big! Any guys who can make flying kung-fu foto-funnies ala Legend of Fong-Sai Yuk win super huge props. I didn't think it was possible for samizdat #1 to be topped, but they fucking did it. Lots of geek-core stuff like hovecraft projects and more tunneling madness. Samizdat is gone now... it will be mourned. I'm tipping a 32oz of IBC to Samizdat's memory. (carl) Second Guess #12: Bob Conrad, POB 9382, Reno NV 89507 // half size, printed, 80 pages, $2.50 ppd // Bob does it again. The best part of this issue is the huge and in depth article on publishing that covers everything from advertising to distribution and includes comments from such zine all stars as the editors of Answer Me!, NO LONGER A FANzine, Cometbus, The Baffler, Lookout, and many more. Also include are satellite articles on editors with their own presses and one by Xan Karn on what makes a good zine. These articles make this one of the most important zines this year. Also included are an interview with Tom Frank of the Baffler (good read), a Sicki/Zoinks conversation, a review of the Yo Yo a Go Go fest, mail, and of course, Bob's cynical journal entries. Always a good read, this issue of Second Guess is a pretty safe bet for anyone who publishes or reads zines regularly. (Angel). Steve Albini Thinks We Suck#6 Mo Ryan,1651 Catalpa, Chicago IL 60640-1103// full size newsprint 24pps, free + postage?// "Mister Rapeman" probably has a good reason for feeling that way. Oh yes, suck they do. This mostly covers the Chicago Indie scene. There is one good article about the Dresden bombings and today's remembrances of that event in Deutschland. And not one mention of the Coctails. Feh. (carl) A Student's Guide to Protesting POB 410441, SF CA 94141-0441// half size, xeroxed, 24pps // This is the text from an ACLU pamphlet on protesting rights, nothing more. I dig it because the world needs more informational pamphleting, especially corncerning direct action. A forward or some commentary by the distributing parties might've been nice. (carl) Xtough guyX #1: POB 26014, 116 sherbrook st, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C4K9 (CA) // half size, xeroxed 20 pages // this is either really biting satire, or insanely bad. I vote for the first one. the author gathers up all the things that are really disgusting about sXe, and makes them funny as hell. lots of cliches about hardcore (like photos of oppressed peoples and kids being hard together). If it's not satire and completely sincere, I'm gonna have to hunt this kid down and kill him. (carl) TRIPWIRE #13: campbell PSC #78 box 1298 APO, AP 96326-1298 // 2 stamps, half size // interesting and unpretentious rants and stories. maybe i like this zine 'cos the editor(s?) seems to share a lot of my own opinions on music and other things. or maybe i just like the stories and dippy sense of humor. or maybe it was the free game card. either way i just really liked it. there's a lot of promise here. get it. (jones). Underground Observer: POB 105, Corning NY 14830 // full size, printed, 16pps, $2ppd// Ick. A couple of guys being wacky, talking bathroom humor talk, trying real hard to shock you with how disturbed they'e supposed to be. It doesn't work, they come off sounding like they're in middle school. Lots of cheesy maniacal ranting and talk about assrape. Grrg puts them to shame. (carl) books: Outposts: a Catalog of Rare and Disturbing INformation by Russ Kick // $18.95 from Carroll and Graf, 260 Fifth Ave NYC 10001 // Okay, actually got this one for review and didn't buy itmyself. It's 8.5x11, softbound, color cover, and 260 pages of information. I learned more from reading this catalog than i do from some zines. He's got every kind of book in here, mostly books on sex, art, drugs, politics, ,counter culture, everythign is weird. Each listing includes a complete description that is more than just a listing of the contents, he actually gives you a taste of what the book was like. I unded up not ordering anything because i wanted everything. On the same level as Loompanics, more professional looking. jen angel / angel+@osu.edu / pob 3593 columbus oh 43210 / 614.421.1269
