Services to authors, publishers, and distributors
The ETEXT Archives provides content hosting services to people or
organizations seeking to make their documents, periodicals, books,
and/or works of fiction available to the public.
The ETEXT Archives does not maintain lists of links
to content on other sites. Please do not request that we link to your
off-site content. This project is only an archive; it is not a list
of links. If you want a link, go to John Labovitz's E-Zine List.
Publishing your materials via the ETEXT Archives yields substantial
benefits:
- Publishing on the ETEXT Archives is free. Disk space is
allocated generously as long as it is available. Shortages have
not existed for several years.
- Content published on the ETEXT Archives is indexed regularly by
both public web crawlers and our own search engine.
- Potential readers of your materials are already finding and
reading similar publications on the ETEXT Archives, and you'll
benefit from the regular "foot traffic" of users browsing the
archives. Users come to our site to search for documents and
e-zines. Publishing your materials on the ETEXT Archives is the
only way your content will end up in our search engine.
- We're committed to preserving your work forever, whether
or not you choose to continue publishing.
- You retain editorial control, and can directly manage your
own content (if you wish).
- You retain all rights to your work, and the ETEXT Archives will
not sell or otherwise profit from your work.
- Your materials will be made available to the general public
via both FTP and HTTP protocols.
Submitting your content to the archives
- Manage your own content. Request an FTP account
by sending e-mail to accounts@etext.org.
You'll be able to upload your own documents to be served up (and indexed)
by our web and FTP servers; the files you upload will be immediately
available to the public in your own archive subdirectory. You may
occasionally experience lengthly delays in response to account
requests.
- Upload your files anonymously. We maintain
an FTP upload directory for users without authenticated access.
Anyone may submit files with or without an account. The upload
area is ftp://ftp.etext.org/pub/incoming/.
Please send a note to www@etext.org when
you upload something, and tell us the file name(s) and subject matter
that you uploaded so we know where it belongs.
- Have us mirror your work. If your documents are
available via FTP on another server, and you'd like to have us copy them
to the ETEXT Archives automatically once per week, send your request
via e-mail to www@etext.org and we'll
set it up. You'll maintain your work on your primary server, and we'll
mirror all your changes and updates automatically.
What submissions will we reject?
Our submission policies are intentionally lax. Our purpose is not
to judge the merit of your content. In order to prevent abuse of
our service, and to fulfill our mission, the following rules are
applied when evaluating materials for acceptance to the archives:
- No links. We will not add a link to your
web site. We only offer publishing services. This is not a directory,
catalog, database, etc.
- Materials must be within the scope of our project.
This includes zines, politics, fiction, poetry, books and religious
texts. It specifically does not include software. We also generally
do not accept business or marketing newsletters, or other works of
a strictly commercial nature (whether or not they are free). If
you would like to publish something outside our current scope, tell
us about it.
- No pornography will be accepted. Zines and
fiction sometimes contain erotic or profane language. This is
usually acceptable. We are primarily interested in not
becoming a site that serves up pictures of naked people. We could
never have enough bandwidth to offer this. If in doubt, ask.
- We must respect copyright law. Do not submit
materials without permission from copyright holders. Do not submit
materials which have copyright restrictions that prevent free
and uncontrolled redistribution to the general public. You can retain
copyright to your work. You cannot prevent it from being widely
redistributed if you put it on our servers. If you wish to submit
materials for which you are not the copyright holder, please obtain
written permission from the copyright holder and send it to us. Send
us an e-mail message at www@etext.org
to arrange this.
- Use appropriate formats. Although we will
accept documents in almost any format, we strongly recommend that you
use formats which lend themselves to on-line browsing and indexing.
This means that ASCII text, HTML (and associated popular image formats),
PDF, and PostScript are the most recommended document formats. Try
to avoid using word processor or application formats which limit
your readership and prevent your documents from being located by
our search engine. Remember that your readers will be using dozens
of different computer platforms, and may not have the same software
that you do.
Acknowledging your sponsor
We encourage authors and publishers who use our service to acknowledge
sponsorship by the ETEXT Archives by helping raise awareness of
our mission and services. One way that web content publishers can
do this is by placing a small graphic and link on web page(s) they
serve from our site. Sample HTML is below:
<A HREF="http://www.etext.org/">
<IMG SRC="/images/etext.gif" ALT="Sponsored by the ETEXT Archives"
WIDTH="161" HEIGHT="46">

This is the graphic. Making your own is also fine.
