THE GOLDEN KEY CAMPAIGN for Secure Communications Online EFF and other civil liberties groups ask that a key-and-envelope logo be displayed to show support for the essential human right of privacy. This fundamental building block of free society has been affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, the constitutions and laws of many countries, and the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights. YOUR privacy is endangered by the Arms Export Control Act, the ITAR Regulations, key "escrow" policies of the US Federal government, and by the legislatures and executive agencies of many other countries. Both the key and the envelope symbolize historic means for communicating privately and protecting personal information. Today, encryption tools provide this privacy in the electronic world. For the same reasons you would not send a love letter or your credit card number through the mail on the back of a post card, we need to ensure that strong encryption -- the electronic version of an envelope -- becomes and remains more widely available. The Golden Key & Envelope will be a way to raise awareness of these issues, from locally to globally, and for the quiet voice of reason to be heard. All Web users are strongly encouraged to place a Golden Key graphic on their servers, such as the ones available here, with a link to the URL mentioned below. Many versions are available, in both blue and manilla, several sizes. There is a horizontal mostly-text version, as well as a banner, both available with white or transparent backgrounds. The regular icons are available with or without text. NOTE: You do NOT need to ask for permission to use these graphics. They are public domain, created by the Internet Privacy Coalition. If you would like to point your icon at EFF's Golden Key page (the page your are reading now), or another Gold Key Site, you can add an HTML anchor to your homepage (more details below). Please feel free to incorporate the logo into larger banners (as a standalone icon, please use the versions with text, so people have some idea that there IS a Golden Key campaign and what it is about when they first encounter it - not everyone has a color monitor, so the verbal name of the campaign is important to pass around.) Thank you for your support and activism, and remember - it's YOUR rights you are fighting for! If you are not sure why you need to participate in the Golden Key Campaign and stand up for your privacy, or uncertain how your rights are threatened, please see our Internet Privacy & Security Legislation Alerts, and Crypto Export Legal News, at (respectively): http://www.eff.org/pub/Alerts/index.html#crypto gopher.eff.org, 1/Privacy/ITAR_export/1996_ECPA_SAFE_bills ftp.eff.org, /pub/Privacy/ITAR_export/1996_ECPA_SAFE_bills/ and http://www.eff.org/pub/Alerts/index.html#bern gopher.eff.org, 1/Legal/Cases/Bernstein_v_DoS ftp.eff.org, /pub/Legal/Cases/Bernstein_v_DoS/ ******* If you'd prefer download the Golden Key graphics via WWW, try the URL: http://www.eff.org/goldkey.html ******* Sample HTML anchors for Gold Key icons To point to the Golden Key Page at EFF:

NOTE: you need to make a local copy of the Gold Key graphic you will use (gkey_manilla_plain_md.gif in this example), and put the appropriate path/filename in the SRC link. Please do not point to EFF's copy of the icon - several thousand people doing this will swamp our server!
