Sci. Lines: 38 Xref: wattle alt.president.clinton:68 talk.bizarre:42873 alt.rush-limbaugh:4593 Just a quick note since I'm sure you're all dying of curiosity. I'm the sys.admin. of Nyx, from where the original posting emanated. (For those who don't know, Nyx is a free public access system I run at the U. of Denver, where I'm a prof in the math/cs dept. Anyone can gain access, but we highly discourage aliases. See for yourself, log in as 'new' to nyx.cs.du.edu/303-871-3324. I think of Nyx as a sort of social experiment, to provide network access to those who can't otherwise obtain it.) (Oh, and to avoid any "you fascist sys admin comments", if you read the docs on-line on Nyx about it's history and philosophy, I hope you'll feel I'm about as far from a fascist as you'll find.) Anyway -- without compromising anyone's privacy, I will say that I did receive a call from a special agent of the Secret Service regarding the posting. I provided him with the information the user gave publicly (our enhanced "finger" type information), and he said they would be paying him a visit. I did explain to him how people often lose inhibitions when posting, that the net was often a pretty loose place, no guarantee it was really him, etc. He seemed to agree with this, but said that they needed to investigate all such threats, etc. (For my part, I don't know they guy, I think what he said was really stupid; and I grudgingly acknowledge that there are limits to free speech, and that this type of language seems more in the "yelling fire in a crowded theater" category than not. However (luckily for me I guess) I didn't have anything but public information to reveal about the poster.) As for how they found out, I have no idea, but my hunch is someone on the net sent them a copy (rather than them monitoring everything). I guess the moral is -- remember that postings are public and subject to the same laws as what you might shout on a street corner. -- Andrew Burt aburt@du.edu "And that, my liege, is how we know the Earth to be banana-shaped" X-NEWS: wattle alt.president.clinton: 71 Relay-Version: VMS News - V6.0 1/9/90 VAX/VMS V5.5; site qut.edu.au Path: qut.edu.au!news.qut.edu.au!bunyip.cc.uq.oz.au!munnari.oz.au!uunet!destroyer!sol.ctr.columbia.edu!emory!athena.cs.uga.edu!milliken Newsgroups: alt.president.clinton,talk.bizarre,alt.rush-limbaugh Subject: This was an unwise thing to post (was Re: i say kill bush) Message-ID: <1992Nov6.163251.2119@athena.cs.uga.edu> From: milliken@athena.cs.uga.edu (Brewmeister) Date: Fri, 6 Nov 1992 16:32:51 GMT References: <1992Nov5.063938.11566@mnemosyne.cs.du.edu> <1992Nov5.145747.26765@mksol.dseg.ti.com> Organization: University of Georgia, Athens Keywords: die Lines: 44 Xref: wattle alt.president.clinton:71 talk.bizarre:42884 alt.rush-limbaugh:4597 In article <1992Nov5.145747.26765@mksol.dseg.ti.com> mccall@mksol.dseg.ti.com (fred j mccall 575-3539) writes: >In <1992Nov5.063938.11566@mnemosyne.cs.du.edu> pfinerty@nyx.cs.du.edu (big daddy hate box) writes: > >>i want bush's head on a pike stuck in my front lawn. fucker. i hate that >>man more than anyone i don't know personally. i want quayle to be pres for >>a couple of weeks and then we kill him and let foley do it for a while. >>then we kill him too and give it to baker. yeah, i say we take the >>opportunity to really fuck with D.C. > >Congratulations. Please inform us of anything unusual, such as being followed, or wierd interference on your phone that wasn't there before. If your remarks were made in jest, the jocularity was lost, partly due to the lack of verbal inflections / facial expressions inherent in this form of communication, and partly because you are saying serious stuff. I wont debate the issue of whether it is constitutionally protected speech or not, but to advocate taking human life, whether of a president or of a sanitation worker, is wrong, legal or not. If it was a joke, it wasn't funny. If you are serious, you need to seek professional help. Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty radical (see my .sig), but you stepped over the line. In a truly fair society, such morons would get wiped out much earlier in the game-stupidity is just not as dangerous as it used to be-the safety of modern living works against the forces of natural selection.
