Also I have to confess that the games review section is sadly missing from this issue of VOId (sniff, sniff) due to Lu (our, once, resident game reviewer) chucking in the towel. This issue we look at an excellent utility to string these images together into a FLI animation file: Dave's Targa Animation Program, Rel 2.0.2. Despite it's name, DTA works with variety of image formats including TGA, IMG, PCX, and GIF. It will also read these files in from a compressed ZIP, ARJ, or LZH archive. Although this line command program comes with tons of bells and whistles, (multi-layer compositing, rescaling, special effects) I will restrict this review to its morphing applications. There are three primary command line switches of interest to the budding morpher. First, the /Snnn switch allows you to specify the animation's speed. I've found that a number between 5 and 8 is usually best. This is slow enough that you can see the transformation take place but fast enough that you aren't seeing each frame independently. If you leave off the /S switch then the default is 0, the fastest setting. At this speed you may see little more than a blur from your animation viewer. It would have been nice if the default was something a little bit slower. Nonetheless, most FLI viewers will allow you to adjust the speed on the fly, so if it's too fast, you can slow it down each time you load it up. The next switch of interest is /P. When invoked DTA creates a ping pong animation, from first file to last and back down again. This can be a good way to create a longer animation from the same number of frames and the results can be much more enjoyable than the single direction animation. For example, it's nice to see the woman change into a cat and then morph back into a woman, rather than see the woman become a cat and then suddenly appear a woman again as the file repeats. The final switch of note, /R is less important but still interesting. It allows the user to specify the FLI resolution, anywhere from the default 320x200 to a maximum 1280x1024. (I only wish my monitor supported this resolution!) By allowing wildcards for the file names, DTA makes creating FLI's from WMORPH or Winmorph a snap. For example, WMORPH produces a group of files of the form: name0000.gif name0001.gif name0002.gif etc... To make your morph come alive you would simply type: DOS> DTA name*.gif /Oname.fli /S6 /P (The /O switch specifies the output file) This produces a fli animation called "name.fli" that ping pongs, runs at speed 6, and has dimensions 320x200. Running this exact command on a fifteen frame morph took only 2.5 min on my 486SX-25. All of this information is well covered in the program's accompanying documentation, which also includes plenty of specific examples. There are few things to fault with DTA. One of my favorite features is that it keeps track of the time it spends doing each step of the animation, and gives you a grand total at the end. Perhaps my only gripe is that it is a command line program. It would be nice to be able to use a mouse and perhaps even preview images before creating the full animation. Well, perhaps in the next release. Overall, Dave's Targa Animator is a brilliant piece of software, an excellent choice for the second step in your morphing process. Next issue I'll conclude my review of shareware morphing with a superb shareware animation viewer. Here's another fine Mario style arcade game from Epic. If you have ever played "Jill of the Jungle" you need not read further, you've already played this game. It uses the identical engine, just new monsters and this time the protagonist is male. The game's VGA graphics are nice although not remarkable. The Sound Blaster supported digitalized sound and music won't get on your nerves, and fits with the game play quite well. What really makes this game worth playing is the character control. Your character's animation is smooth and there are a variety of directable weapons you can find. There are also a few chances to change your form into a bee or travel underwater in a mini-sub which can be a refreshing change from the standard run/jump/shoot. If you have one, I highly recommend taking advantage of the game's solid joystick support. Another nice feature is the option to collect emeralds and use them to purchase power-ups, adding a small element of strategy. What's this game's main problem? It's too easy. I'm not very good at such games, yet I worked through this one in a matter of hours. Perhaps if I had spent more time looking for the abundant hidden areas I would have had a more difficult time, but even those I stumbled upon were not terribly challenging. Even the ending battle disappointed, just a matter of standing in the right spot and pounding on the fire button until a static object exploded. Although the concept is overused, this game really would have benefited from some kind of final boss to battle. Epic apparently tried pretty hard to give XARGON an interesting plot, revealing bits of the story at a time in journal entries as you progress from site to site on the overhead map. Unfortunately, the plot is even older than the game engine. The hero is lost in a mysterious, weird world filled with evil and must fight his way to freedom. As a fun diversion this game definitely succeeds, but in it's main goal, to hook the user into purchasing the entire XARGON series, it ultimately fails. Bugs: 1) There is rumor of a scoring bug although I have not encountered it personally since I tend to ignore scoring and concentrate on game play. 2) Don't run this under Windows. Besides the usual problems with contention for the Sound Blaster, it is remarkably sluggish. (This is with a Local Bus 486SX-25 and 8meg RAM) 3) This may not be a bug, but it's definitely an irritation. When you can't see your bullets, they don't exist. You encounter this especially when throwing rocks in arcs that should land on a monster, but instead disappear off the top of the screen, never to return... Program Name: Xargon version 3.0 Synopsis: Standard run/jump/shoot anything that moves game. Company: Epic MegaGames Cost: Free, $30 gets you the full trilogy. They're on the cover of every magazine I read; they're being discussed in all my favorite news groups. So, I must pose that deceptively easy question again: should I make the plunge and buy a CD-ROM. I'm all set up to stick one into my system with a 16-bit sound card, SCSI port, and even enough spare dough. So what's holding me back? Well, there are many reasons for thinking carefully before making this purchase, but the one that keeps arising actually applies to just about any computer part. That is, when is the right time to buy or upgrade? Who's to say that as soon as you by the latest greatest thingy-magigger, someone won't immediately come up with the fabulous doo-hicky that makes your brand-new, expensive thingy-magigger worthless and unsupported. CD-ROM has a great potential to create this exact situation. What makes this common danger so much more lucid for CD-ROM? It's quite simple. There is just too much obvious room for improvement. Undoubtedly, a lot of research money is currently being directed towards increasing the physical data transfer rate of CD- ROM drives. The amount of data a CD can retrieve at a time is limited primarily by the rate at which one can spin the disk. We have already seen single spin drives become relics of the past, often unsupported by newer cd-rom products. Now, triple speed drives are being released at relatively reasonable prices. Even quadruple speed drives are currently available, although still at a price far out of the average consumer's range. How much longer will it be until we leave 600kbs far behind? One of the current CD-ROM drives' worst qualities is their access time. The time it took older models to find and return data from a CD could almost be measured in seconds. This may not seem that slow, until one realizes that most hard drives, with capacities of 170meg or more, now have access times of less than 14ms. Even the fastest CD-ROMS now just barely squeak under the 200ms mark. This impediment was so great that Origin originally chose not to release its immense flight simulation game, "Strike Commander" on CD. They claimed it would simply be unplayable on most of the current snail-like drives. Until access times for CD's can approach the same level of performance one expects from a hard drive, there will be plenty of room for improvement. I won't even be surprised if CD's most lauded quality, data capacity, gradually increases until they can easily hold in an excess of one gig. Unfortunately, even with new software drivers, it is unlikely that an old CD drive will be able to take advantage of larger data capacities when they inevitably become available. If larger capacity CD's become the standard, into the dust-bin go the old drives. Such can also be the case when CD-ROM "standards" come and go like phases of the moon. Who knows what strange new file format the newest drives will need to read. Of course, I have yet to mention the biggest and most obvious opportunity for improvement. Someone once said, "Build a better mouse trap and the world will beat a path to your door." One could easily modernize that famous quote, changing it to, "Make CD-ROMs re-writable and never have to work for a living again." Such an invention would make hard disks practically obsolete, revolutionizing the way the computer industry worked and thought. Of course, everybody would simply have to have one of the new fabulous doo-hicky drives. Okay, so maybe I'm just being a bit paranoid. Maybe I should just give in and buy a decent double-speed CD-ROM with a 250ms access time, and enjoy the full digitalized speak in "Day of the Tentacle" and the ability to roam through an electronic encyclopedia until I know everything there is to know about eighteenth century murals. But, then again, maybe I'll wait just one more month. The path is now set to your new edited version ! by Colin Brick Frontier Hints This is a quick cheat for Frontier (PC) which allows you to get as much money as you want in seconds. It uses a bug in the program which works like this: If you try to buy a ship while you have passengers on board the difference in price is credited or debited to your account, but you do not get the ship. To make use of this bug you have to buy a ship with enough cargo space for passenger cabins, fit it out with a few, and collect some passengers from the bulletin board. Then go to the shipyard and find a ship which costs less than the one you have. Press the 'Buy' button for that ship and hold it down until you have enough money. I found that 200 Million Credits kept me going for a while. If you actually want to buy a ship simply fit your existing one with an escape pod, launch yourself and eject a few thousand Kilometres away from the planet or station. Using this method you get to keep the money, but lose the passengers quickly and easily. Whether this bug is in all versions of Frontier, or if I have an early version and this bug was fixed later, I don't know. Though many of the current titles are just repackaged ones of their current products (i.e. Microsoft Money, Microsoft Works, Encarta, Bookshelf, Flight Simulator, etc.) they plan on adding many, many more titles. They have a new children's desktop publishing program out that is sort of a combination of Print Shop, a children's version of Microsoft Publisher, and a children's version of Microsoft Works. Bill Gates claims that the Home market will be one of the fastest growing markets in the future - plus he just got married and will probably be starting a family of his own. CD-ROM Review * GIF's Galore * CD-ROM drives are a wonderful tool for computer graphics enthusiasts like me. Eight-bit color graphics images are notorious for their disk robbing capabilities. Just four of these images can consume over a megabyte of drive space. A single CD-ROM, on the other hand can hold thousands of such images. Walnut Creek CD-ROM's GIFs Galore is a perfect example of such a disc. The GIFs Galore collection is a wonderful assortment of over 6000 images in Compuserve's popular GIF format. All kinds of images are included: from lovely models in swimsuits to animals, cartoons, clip art, nature scenes, famous people, stunning raytraces and fractals and much more. Shareware viewers are also included for various computer platforms (including Amiga, Atari ST, DEC Station, Mac, MS-DOS, Windows, OS2, SGI Irix, SPARC and X11) to allow you to view all of these images on what ever computer system you may be using since the image format is device independent. The images are stored in subdirectories on the ISO 9660 standard disc with titles ranging from "THINGS" to "REPTILES". There are birds, boats, buildings, cars, dogs, fish, flowers, food, frogs, hunks, insects and trains. There is an ample swimsuit subdirectory with about the most complete collection of such GIFs I've ever seen. These are all G & PG rated--you won't find any racy adult stuff on this disc. One feature I really like is that there are catalog GIF files in each directory (labeled 000cat.gif, 001cat.GIF, etc.) allowing you see the contents in that directory in a reduced matrix, similar to those produced by programs like GIFCAT and GIFDESK. With GIF Galore, Walnut Creek CD-ROM has produced the best collection of GIF graphics I've seen at any price. Five Stars ***** COMPACT DISC FORMATS This note is an attempt to answer the oft-asked questions about CD formats like "What is the difference between CD-DA, CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA, and CD-I?" and "How is Photo CD compatible with all of these?" and "What is the difference between single-session and multi-session discs?" In the beginning, there was CD-DA (Compact Disc-Digital Audio), or standard music CDs. CD-DA begat CD-ROM when people realized that you could store a whole bunch of computer data on a 12cm optical disc (650mb). CD-ROM drives are simply another kind of digital storage media for computers, albeit read-only. They are peripherals just like hard disks and floppy drives. (Incidentally, the convention is that when referring to magnetic media, it is spelled "disk." Optical media like CDs, LaserDisc, and all the other formats I'm about to explain are spelled "disc.") CD-I (Compact Disc-Interactive) came next. This is a consumer electronics format that uses the optical disc in combination with a computer to provide a home entertainment system that delivers music, graphics, text, animation, and video in the living room. Unlike a CD-ROM drive, a CD-I player is a standalone system that requires no external computer. It plugs directly into a TV and stereo system and comes with a remote control to allow the user to interact with software programs sold on discs. It looks and feels much like a CD player except that you get images as well as music out of it and you can actively control what happens. In fact, it *is* a CD-DA player and all of your standard music CDs will play on a CD-I player; there is just no video in that case. Next came CD-ROM/XA (eXtended Architecture). Now we go back to computer peripherals - a CD-ROM drive but with some of the compressed audio capabilities found in a CD-I player (called ADPCM). This allows interleaving of audio and other data so that an XA drive can play audio and display pictures (or other things) simultaneously. There is special hardware in an XA drive controller to handle the audio playback. This format came from a desire to inject some of the features of CD-I back into the professional market. Now, along comes the idea from Kodak for Photo CD - digital pictures on compact disc. They teamed up with Philips to develop the standard for Photo CD discs. At this point, a new problem enters the picture, if you'll pardon the expression. All of the disc formats mentioned so far are read-only; there is no way for anyone but the producer of one of these discs to store his/her own content on the disc - that is, to write to it. But there already existed a technology called WORM (Write Once Read Many). This is an optical disc that can be written to, but exactly once. You can "burn" data on it, but once burned the data can not be erased, although it can then be used like a CD-ROM disc and read forever. (Depending on your definition of forever, of course.) I should say that CD-ROM, CD-ROM/XA, and CD-I discs are normally "mastered," as opposed to burned. That means that one master copy is made and then hundreds, or thousands, or millions (if you're lucky enough to need that many) of replicates (or replicants, if you are a "Blade Runner" fan) are pressed from the master. This process is much cheaper than burning for quantities above a few dozen or so. Generally, disc pressing plants can handle all of these formats as the underlying technology is the same; the only difference is in the data and disc format. The reason that WORM technology was critical for Photo CD is obvious - the content of these discs is not determined by the manufacturer or publisher. For Photo CD, each disc will be different - a roll or few rolls of film per disc from a customer. Kodak and Philips wanted Photo CD discs to be playable on both computer peripherals for desktop publishing uses AND on a consumer device for home viewing. For the former, CD-ROM/XA was chosen as a carrier and for the latter CD-I, which was already designed as a consumer electronics device, and dedicated Photo CD players. This desire for a hybrid disc, or one with multi-platform compatibility, led to the development of the "CD-I Bridge" disc format. A Bridge disc is one that is readable on both a CD-I player and a CD-ROM/XA drive. This Bridge format is the reason there is so much confusion about CD-ROM drives for Photo CD. A drive that supports Photo CD must be a CD-ROM/XA drive that is also Bridge-compatible. (The technical description of Bridge discs calls for supporting certain kinds of sectors identified by "form" and "mode" bits, which is what you usually hear instead of the "Bridge" disc label.) That almost completes the picture, except for the concept of sessions. Although a WORM disc can only be written to once, it is not necessary to write, or burn, the entire disc all at once. You can burn the disc initially with, say, a few hundred megabytes of data, and then go back later and burn some more data onto it. Of course, each burn must be to a virgin part of the disc; once a spot on the disc is burned, it can not be re-burned. Each burn operation is referred to as a "session," and a drive or disc that supports this multiple burning operation is called "multisession." Originally, I believe that all WORMs were single session only. That is, you could not go back and add data to a WORM disc once it was burned, even if it was not full. For Photo CD, they wanted the consumer to be able to add more pictures to an existing disc as additional rolls of film were processed. So the extension of WORM technology to multisession was developed and adopted for the Bridge disc format. This required hardware changes to CD-ROM/XA drives and that is why there are a fair number of single session XA drives on the market and multisession ones appearing more and more. A single session drive can read a multisession disc, but it can only read the contents of the first session that was burned. Incidentally, all Philips CD-I players are multisession, although all current CD-I discs have only a single session on them. (Generally, being mastered means a single session, although it is possible to master a multisession disc. I don't know of any software that currently supports this, however.) Well, I hope that this answers some questions about CD formats. Sorry it is so long, but it is not a simple story. Perhaps I should have formatted this as a multisession answer... As a postscript, since I wrote this original explanation, Philips and JVC have developed another standard called Video CD.
