Please send all posts, requests for subscription, or address changes to: gt7274c@prism.gatech.edu Please keep the posts coming! I still haven't fully compiled the topics for the subscribers poll - that should come out in about a week, and hopefully it will generate even more activity since it is something everyone can participate in. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moderator's Silly Slang: -My dear friend Travis Gravell (founding editor of 'Wilde About Morrissey' fanzine) is in England, and boy does he have some stories to tell when he gets back. From going to Morrissey's house, to catching a ride with Johhny Marr, to going to the EMI release party of "Your The One For Me Fatty", to having the best selection of Morrissey/Smiths merchandise, he is one lucky guy. Travis has taken quite a few pictures and I'm sure will document his encounter with Morrissey in the next issue of 'Wilde About Morrissey', I will keep you posted as to its release. -"You're The One For Me, Fatty" 12" will not be released here in America, but the rumored release date for the UK version is July8. The b-sides are "Pass- ionate Love", and "There Speaks A True Friend." Sire's decision to not release this single domestically is possibly caused by the better-than-expected sales of "We Hate It...", which meant that releasing the second single at an appro- priate date could push the LP back. -Sire Records urges everyone to call 1-900-884-2MTV and request the "We Hate It..." video. I am not sure, but I believe calls are $0.75 each, but who cares! -Morrissey is not playing the Glastonbury Festival, and in fact NEVER was scheduled to, this is no cancellation. He is slated to play a show in France on July 4, however. -The Smiths greatest hits cd is scheduled to come out on August 25. This date is subject to change. Here is the list Ilene from Sire sent as the "short list" of some of the titles being considered: "This Charming Man," "William, It Was Really Nothing," "Shoplifters Of The World Unite," "What Difference Does It Make?," "Girlfriend In A Coma," "Rubber Ring", "Half A Person," "How Soon Is Now?," "Hand In Glove," "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before," "Sheila Take A Bow," "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others," "Panic," and "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want." -Finally, CONGRATULATIONS to the people at 'Sing Your Life' and The Harsh Truth for a truly wonderful Morrissey Birthday Issue Fanzine!! Both the 'Birthday Issue' and 'SYL2' are absolutely superior as far as fanzines go, and are available at: Russ Seekatz 3726 N.Tucson Blvd. Tucson, AZ 85716 USA You can also email David Tseng at davidct@SEAS.ucla.edu. 'Birthday Issue' con- tains many great photos, articles about the band, and has lots of really neat information (sorry, the price eludes me, but if you email david he can tell you). 'SYL2' is absolutely stuffed with information, I can't put it down! Many great photos, articles, the second leg tour diary, and the reader's poll. Both fanzines are absolutely great, I strongly suggest getting them soon if you want either one, since there are limited quantities and the people at 'Sing Your Life' tell me that their first issue has already sold out. -Thanks to: Kevin and Michael for co-founding 'Strangeways,' Travis for all his encouragement, Ilene at Sire for all her information and helpfulness - it is very much appreciated!, Russ and David at 'Sing Your Life' -thanks for a great fanzine!, The Harsh Truth for the wonderful 'Birthday Issue', Matt M. for finally getting me the 'Suedehead' CD, all subscribers who make the 'Strangeways' dream real, and everyone else who feels the same way we at 'Strangeways' feel about Morrissey and The Smiths Well, keep the posts coming, and enjoy! Michael :) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Thomas J. Baker" Subject: Re: Strangeways Hello, This is my first post. I happened upon this excellent list by mere chance. As you can see, I named my new NeXT Strangeways and on a whim, I used Archie to find all occurences of "strangeways". Consequently, I found the quartz archive site and couldn't believe my luck in finding a list of people that were as interested as I was about Mozz and the Smiths. My girlfriend and I have been avid fans since first discovering the Smiths back in '86. Forgive me if this is old news but remember, this is the first up-to-date Strangeways I've ever received; I have just barely read the other 20+ archived issues and so last summer seems as current as this. Anyway, I finally got to see Morrissey at Great Woods in Massachusetts last summer (awesome show) and barely missed seeing the Smiths at the same venue several years earlier (which was apparently their last US tour stop). As final background, I probably could listen to Morrissey sing the phone book and be happy. He definately has "the voice." Anyway, the point of this is that someone posted to alt.music.alternative about the release date of "You're the one for me, fatty". Supposedly, the 12" and CD5 will be available in the UK on June 8th. When I asked him about the domestic release he replied, "As far as I know, the new Morrissey single will be available domestically. However, Morrissey has the habit of releasing only every other single here in the U.S." That's all for now, tjb --- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Thomas Baker Director of the New Hampshire NeXT User Group | | P.O. I know someone who sells photos that he has taken at concerts. I believe he is asking $2.75 plus $1.50 shipping for the entire order. The photos are either color (4"X6") or b/w (3"X5"). The catalog has small photocopies of the photos and he states clearly which are color and which are b/w. I bought 3. I like them. He also has a few audio tapes for sale for $6.50 plus $1.50 shipping I think. If you want more info, E-mail me an I'll e-mail you his snail-mail address. Scott From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful Thanks to Thomas J. Baker for helping me with the lyrics to this incredible song. However, there is one very confusing line at the end. If anyone has any idea or clever guess as to its identity, drop me some E-mail. It goes like: Oh, you have loads of songs So many songs More songs then they can stand First chorus ??????? Just listen..... Thanks Scott From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: Higher Education Since this bootleg has come up in some recent discussions, I thought I'd write a little something in praise of it. I am very pleased with it. For one thing, it is very clear. I can hear the various instruments quite distinctly and Morrissey's voice is clear also. Another aspect of this boot that appeals to me is that it is a fluid concert. There are no apparent "jumps" between songs. This gives the feel of really being there. Now, I am no CD bootleg expert by any means (I own only 3), but feel that I must suggest this one. "King Lear" is another bootleg that is pretty good. In case you weren't aware, it is the boot of the HammerSmith concert. However, it is missing the first two songs -- The Last of the Famous International Playboys and very good version of Sister I'm A Poet -- but it seems that it was made a little too loud. It doesn't have the clarity of Higher Ed. Also, there are several "jumps" between songs. It was a lively concert nonetheless. Last issue Darren Gyles talked about "Live Panic!" I really thought that was a bad bootleg. I traded it in for Higher Ed. I just saw the short film "The Queen Is Dead." I highly recommend seeing it if at all possible. The directors name eludes me at the moment and my program is not nearby. It is 15 minutes in length and consists of "The Queen Is Dead," "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," and "Panic." An excellent excellent film. "It should have been me!" :) Scott From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: Smiths in Spain I just picked up the CD bootleg of The Smiths live in Madrid Spain. It's a great CD. I find the quality very good for an older bootleg. It sounds a tab bit louder than an average CD. The bass, or moreover the drums aren't terribly loud. The guitars and vocals are quite clear. Also, it's a straight concert, no jumps, 18 songs 69 minutes. For me, it was almost worth the $30 for the "Barbarism Begins at Home" found on it. During some of the songs Morrissey has an echo on his voice -- nice touch. I heard it used to be on vinyl. It makes a nice CD boot to. The cover is a color picture of the band. I've seen it somewhere before -- nice clear shot. The CD and the back of the case are labeled nicely. I think it was by Swingin' Pig records or something. The songs are early tunes up to and including Meat Is Murder. Shakespeare's Sister appears as the "new" single at the time (this concert was in 1985). Anyway, look for it, and maybe buy it. Try to listen to it first if you can. :) Scott From: IBON500@INDYVAX.IUPUI.EDU Subject: Re: Strangeways HELLO EVERYBODY!!!!!! rene' here to say that i have just purchased the Morrissey single, We hate it when our friends become succesful... the single has 4 other tracks that are live. the tracks are, in order, suedehead, I've changed my plea..., pregnant for the last time, and alsatian cousin. goodness did i spell that right...sorry it is 3 in the morning now. i am tired the tracks are wonderful, the title track is marvelous!!!! morrissey played it in chicago and addressed it as new.... the concert version was very exciting!!!! well enjoy it everybody and i hope to hear of concert dates soon. if there are people who would like to get a hold of me to meet at various shows during august please email me!!!!!! i would love to go to many shows this august!!! seeya all soon hopefully from indy au revour rene' From: Edward Baichtal Subject: Strangeways I'd like to sell most of my Smiths and Morrissey posters and I was wondering if anyone on here was interested? Please send me mail if you are, and I'll send you a list of what I have. From: Edward Baichtal Subject: Strangeways I have always been looking for, and never found, the "This Charming Man" single that has "Wonderful Woman" on the b-side. Does anyone know how I can get a copy of the single? (Preferably the vinyl version) I have also noticed that all the "This Charming Man" singles were once released on a CD that was only in print for a while. About a year ago I saw it priced in a magazine for $90, so I assume not many were printed. BUT! I am also aware that all of the Smiths stuff is going to be reissued this summer (with new artwork on the covers - hmmm...). There is supposed to be a box set of the albums as well, and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it? And maybe a singles box set will follow ... ? :) From: ucsd!pnet51.orb.mn.org!ira@gatech.gatech.edu Subject: strangeways I know that I have asked this before, but now there might be new subscribers so I will check again. Would anyone be willing to share the inscriptions on their UK 12" Smiths and/or Morrissey vinyl with me? I am compiling a list of the ones that I have and am interested in getting those that I don't have, especially those of you who have Smiths or Morrissey albums on vinyl. Please check and e-mail me with the ones you have and I will share my completed list with Strangeways when I am done. Thanks!
