Please send all posts, requests for subscription, or address changes to: gt7274c@prism.gatech.edu I hope this issue isn't coming out so late that noone is in school to read it, end of the quarter projects and finals have kept me quite busy. I am sorry, but still no subscribers poll. I didn't want to make up all the topics myself, but so far no suggestions. Please let me know if there are any unusual topics that you think people should be polled on. Also, I would like to apologize for an error in date I made on V2 I13. The 'Your Arsenal' LP is to be released in the US July 28, not August 24 as I had previously stated. Sounds much better, huh? :) Keep sending your posts in, there should be some more news, especially after 'Your The One For Me Fatty' is released. Sorry, no date on that yet. And according to NME, Morrissey's world tour starts in August, but there are no hard facts as to where he will start. Dates should be set, I will try to find out from Sire in California when Morrissey's tour dates are, they should be released sometime soon I hope. And good luck to all of those people who are making the trek later this month to see Morrissey and his 'Kill Uncle' band at the Glastonbury Festival in England. A friend of mine is going, and it seems Morrissey will probably preview his LP at that show. Sorry its been so long since the last 'Strangeways', Happy 33RD Morrissey (May 22, 1959), and enjoy! :) Michael ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: davidct@SEAS.UCLA.EDU (David C. Tseng) Subject: STRANGEWAYS -------- Some news: Morrissey has been vacationing in Los Angeles the past 2 weeks. It is unsure if he's doing any type of record company business, but hopefully he is also working out some tour plans. While here, I've heard that he has surveyed the damage the past riots have caused. Last Saturday he was seen bicycling in Venice, and stopped in a store which was playing KROQ. They announced that there would be a Morrissey lookalike contest at a local club that night. Morrissey decided to attend and was completely mobbed (as usual). He stayed for about an hour and a half, most of the time in a back, secluded room. He signed lots of things sent back to him, surprisingly some Smiths things also. In other news, the new album is scheduled for release July 28, some of the song titles are : "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side" , "Glamorous Glue" , "Certain People I Know" , "We'll Let You Know" , "We Hate It..." "You're the one for me, Fatty" , "Seasick Yet Still Docked" , "Tomorrow" , "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" and one more I can't seem to remember. Those are not in order as they would appear on the LP. Lastly, if anyone ordered SYL2 and wondered where it is, it will be coming soon, everything will be printed by June 8, and mailed by June 14. Thanks for your patience. David Tseng From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: VOX If you haven't already, then you'd better pick up the June issue of VOX. It's an English music magazine and this issue is full of great stuff. page 4 -- couple paragraphs about The Smiths' compilation page 7 -- Morrissey quotes pages 20 - 26 -- a part of "Moz/Marr" is reprinted page 37 -- a short bit on Rourke,Gannon, and Joyce page 40 -- a list of famous people on Smiths' single convers I think that's about all. Check it out! Has anyone else seen the Hammersmith Odeon video? I love it. Scott From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: Live In Dallas I just picked up a copy of Live In Dallas from the music store. I think that it is pretty good. It's not as good as Hammersmith, but a good concert. Everyday Is Like Sunday got a little out of hand though. About the new album, I received a catalog from a mail-order music place in Milwaukee that claims to have Your Arsenal already. They want $25 plus $7 shipping. What's the deal. I thought it wasn't due to be released for a while? Scott From: zerohour@phoenix.pub.uu.oz.au (Mark Dorset) Subject: Strangeways Hi there, I just found out about your magazine tonight and I'm glad I did! put me on the mailing list please? Here's an offering for your magazine: --------KKKK---------------------------------------------------------------- I'm living in Melbourne Australia and I have noticed there seems to be a bit of confusion about Morrissey's "Education in Reverse" album... I can pretty much clear up the confusion for Edward Baichtal (see issue 2.10) and others. Morrissey's 1st album as we all know is called "Viva Hate". For some reason when the vinyl album (not cd) was released in Australia they called it "Education in Reverse". I'm not sure of the reasons, whether that was a working title that wasn't fixed or otherwise. The track listing is as follows: Side 1: Alstatian Cousin Little Man, What Now? Everyday Is Like Sunday Bengali in Platforms Angel, Angel, Down We Go Together Late Night, Maudlin Street Side 2: Suedehead Break Up the Family The Ordinary Boys I Dont Mind If You Forget Me Dial-A-Cliche Margaret On the Guillotine The # on the record is EMC 790 180 and they arent pressing them anymore so they are collectors items. I'm not sure what they're worth nowadays, the last time I saw one for sale was in an ad in NME from 1990 and they were asking 10 pounds, but I have heard they're worth about 25 pounds now. I have a spare one which I can sell if anyone wants it badly. In Mint condition for AU$30 (plus postage). Or I'm willing to swap it for a copy of the New York Mix of "This Charming Man" on 12" vinyl. ZH P.S. If you've seen Morrissey live be thankful, he cancelled his Melbourne show last year at the last minute, resheduling it for a week later, then cancelling that show at the last minute as well without rescheduling. P.P.S. I have heard a rumour that later this year all the old Smiths albums are being re-released with new covers, and a new `Best Of' CD is coming out as well. Can anyone back this up? From: IBON500@INDYVAX.IUPUI.EDU Subject: Re: Strangeways greetings from indianapolis!!!! it is i, rene', here to say a few things about the MORRISSEY in DALLAS video i just bought today! for one, whoever said it wasnt any good was way wrong... there were no quick shots of morrissey...the whole video was morrissey! that is all i saw through the whole video...morrissey morrissey and more MORRISSEY!!!!!! the songs were awesome as they always are and i have never fealt happier with a video. reminds me of chicago when morrissey toured in the fall for a brief time. i thought chicago was good because i was in the front with my friends having the greatest time of my life! but this dallas show was way better! morrissey is in my opinion and i am sure in other peoples opinions THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH! and i dont mean that circus thing... nobody in the world can bring out so much POWER AND EXCITEMENT than morrissey! a wonderful entertainer and a wonderful man! how often does anyone find a person with so much meaning and so much presence? you dont...it is rare and morrissey has this power. it is THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH and i hope to hear tour dates soon. forever morrissey rene' From: Tom Cronin Subject: submission: vinyl lust Hello. I have been overcome by a dream. A vision. I must have everything the Smiths released on vinyl (I don't have to duplicate 7" and 12" though, unless the 7" is different, only 12" is fine.) I was wondering if there's anyone out there who bought they're vinyl long ago and then decided that nowadays CDs are the way to go. If so, or if you just don't want your vinyl, or need money, please contact me. I need vinyl. If anyone has a copy of The Smiths with the original printed paper sleeve, I'm interested. All the stores around here have clear vinyl inner sleeves (some sort of rerelease, I suppose.) Does anyone have any tour info for Morrissey and the new album? Hopefully the trend of two tours per album will continue (the best part of Kill Uncle.) There are a couple places where I am confused. I note those with brackets "[]" or just question marks. Please E-mail me if anyone can figure out what I can't or anyone has any corrections. I know this is most futile since the lyrics will appear in the July album, but what the hell. "We Hate It when Our Friends Become Successful" We hate it when our friends become successful We hate it when our friends become successful Oh look at those clothes Now look at that [vase] It's so [old] [It's such a video] Well, it's really laughable We hate it when our friends become successful and if their northern That it makes it even worse then If we can destroy them You bet your life we will destroy them If we can hurt them Well, we may as well It's really laughable You see it should have been me It could have been me Everybody knows Everybody says so They say Oh, you have loads of songs So many songs ?????? First chorus ?????? Just listen..... That's all for now! Scott From: Tom Cronin Subject: submission Hello. In response to the Wonderful Woman questions, I have both the vinyl referred to (A Nice Bit of Meat, w/ Marilyn Monroe on the cover, I presume) and the CD (Morrissey 1959-1987). The two albums say that the songs were recorded at two different times, although I am absolutely certain that they are the same. If the person who has the CD also has the Hand in Glove 7", they can verify whether the Handsome Devil is the same or not. (The date of Handsome Devil is on the single). I've never heard Wonderful Woman non-live, so I can't say if the lyrics are changed. All this reminds me... Was Handsome Devil ever recorded (and subsequently released) in the Rough Trade studios? I know it is out live, and on Peel Sessions (or whatever it was on Hatful of Hollow) but is there such a thing as a studio version of this song? In response to the discography, is there anyone out there who knows ALL of the Smiths releases, including those from the US, France, W.Germany, etc.? I'm attempting to get the _complete_ collection (dream on) and I would appreciate any help I could get. For example, the fact that The Boy with The Thorn in His Side does not appear in discographies irks me, as I own it, so I know it was put out (albeit by Sire.) Any help graciously accepted. Tom ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Cronin "Ere long done do does did" tcronin@ocf.Berkeley.EDU - Some dizzy whore, 1804 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: PAUL LEDDY Subject: How Morrissey comes up with lyrics. Hi, Yes it is my first posting. I was wondering if anyone knows of any publications or such that goes in detail about Morrissey lyric writing...How he comes up with ideas, what kind of imagery does he try to convey. His influences of using Wilde. Anything would be great. Thanks, Paul From: Gyles Subject: Rare CD's Hello. I just recieved two bootlegs that may be of interest to you people. One is 'The Smiths - Live Panic!!!' and the other is 'Morrisey (sic) - Higher Education'. I will describe them now for you. THE SMITHS - 'LIVE PANIC' Total Running Time 43:17. Recorded live somewhere in the U.K. 1984 Tracks and running times as listed on the case of the CD (These generally do not correspond to the actual running time) 1. Classics For You (0:56) 2. How Soon is Now? (4:16) 3. Nowhere Fast (2:06) 4. I Want the One I Can't Have (2:04) 5. Bigmouth Strikes Again (3:18) 6. Panic (2:44) 7. Heaven Knows (4:51) *Actually Meat is Murder 8. Stretch (4:58) *Actually The Queen Is Dead 9. I Know It's Over (6:19) 10. Queen (3:05) *Actually Hand in Glove 11. I Want to Go Home (3:25) *a.k.a. The Headmaster Ritual 12. You've Got Everything Now (3:12) Comments: Generally it is pretty good. It's a fairly decent recording. The tracks have very abrupt beginning and ends, but I suppose that is to be expected. I have only listened to it twice, on loudspeakers and on headphones and it sounds better on headphones. I would give it about a 7 out of 10. Except for tracks 7,11 and 12 which have somehow been sped up so that Morrissey sounds like one of the chipmunks, these tracks have sound quality about 4 or 5 out of 10. Morrissey - 'Higher Education' Total Running Time 50:33. Recorded live in Utrecht, Holland, 1 July 1991. 1. Mute Witness (3:36) 2. Will Never Marry (3:16) 3. Pregnant For The Last Time (2:35) 4. Everyday is Like Sunday (3:13) 5. Cosmic Dancer (4:03) 6. Disappointed (3:06) 7. Our Frank (3:30) 8. That's Entertainment (3:47) 9. I've Changed My Plea To Guilty (3:06) 10. Piccadilly Palare (2:57) 11. Sing Your Life (3:23) 12. (Asian Rut *Not Listed*) King Lear (5:50) 13. The Last of the Famous International Playboys (3:17) 14. November Spawned a Monster (4:48) Comments: Very good recording. I would easily give it a 9 out of 10 for sound quality. The songs Cosmic Dancer and Disappointed are the same as were released on (I think) the Pregnant for the Last Time single. The only problem I have with this CD is that they seem to think 'Morrisey' is the correct spelling of his name. I would be willing to make a few copies of these recordings if people wanted to trade or whatever. Darren umgyles0@ccu.umanitoba.ca From: Michael.C.Massengale@Dartmouth.EDU Subject: Strangeways Sire Records has put together a project called "Get Out!" which I believe is somehow intended to combat homophobia. I don't know how they intend to do that, but, according to Rolling Stone, if you dial 1-800-876-1199 (? - I think that's right) they will send you a free copy of the Get Out! CD, and you will also receive 3 issues of Out magazine. Oh, BTW, the CD has a track from Morrissey on it. Michael
