The number of new sub- scribers has jumped dramatically, keep telling your friends about us and have them send their subscription requests to Michael at: gt7274c@prism.gatech.edu Because of all the rumors and news about both Morrissey and The Smiths, there will probably be quite a few posts, but don't let that discourage you, keep them coming! You can also send posts to the above address. Also, there have been a few inquiries about having individual posts mailed out to everyone as I receive them rather than them being compiled into a newsletter. Let me know what you think, and I hope you enjoy! :) Pi ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Simon Hughes Subject: New Moz & Smiths releases Apparently the new Morrissey album `Your Arsenal' is due in July with a single to precede it (in addition to the soon come `We Hate It When Our Friends Our Successful' single). Also WEA, having acquired the rights to The Smiths back catalogue, plan to release a greatest hits album in the Summer followed next year by the re-release of all The Smiths albums on cd with new artwork. From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajews) Subject: April News Here's some info from the March 28th New Musical Express: "The Smiths' entire catalogue of recorded material has been sold to Warner Music after a ten-month negotiation period with Morrissey and Johnny Marr." Does this mean that we can look forward to a boxed set? A book entitled, "Morrissey & Marr -- The Severed Alliance" is due to be published on April 30 by Omnibus. Says Rogan:"The book covers the whole history of The Smiths, right from the various members' virtually undocumented early days up to the present." Scott "There's more to life than books you know, but not much more."--The Smiths From: Simon Hughes Subject: Strangeways: Smiths back catalogue and new book The Smiths back catalogue has finally all been sold to Warners so I guess we should expect reissues soon. Also, on April 30, a new Smiths book is published by Omnibus. `Morrissey and Marr - The Severed Alliance' is by J. Rogan and features information about the band members activities before forming The Smiths as well as a history of the band. Simon ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Simon Hughes, Dept. of Computing, Imperial College. Email: sph@doc.ic.ac.uk From: davidct@SEAS.UCLA.EDU (David C. Tseng) Subject: strangeways -------- Hello friends, I've recently heard some good news and rumors. The "Live in Dallas" video we've heard so much of is scheduled for release in late May. Also, the "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" single domestically also around that time. The b-side will apparently be 4 live tracks, from different shows, we're told. "Alsatian Cousin", "Suedehead" are among them, I can't remember the others. Perhaps "Everyday is Like Sunday" and "Sister, I'm a Poet." As for rumors, I have heard from different sources that Morrissey will tour again with the release of the new LP, perhaps hitting the U.S. in August. There is also a rumor that he will be playing in Los Angeles for a benefit sometime soon. A new English fanzine called "Sounds Like Morrissey" was released on March 30, and is one of the most informative items I have ever seen. It includes a 1991 World Tour diary, as well as a list of publications Morrissey has appeared in, which includes all INTERNATIONAL publications. There are also many excellent photos taken by the fans, and a few other things. It is highly recommended. It is large format, 32 pages and is limited to 500 copies only, so I suggest ordering right away. Send $7 (bills only) to: Mark Taylor, 132 Sylvia Avenue, Knowle, Bristol, BS3 5BZ ENGLAND This includes air-mail postage. Mark did the excellent "Smiths Indeed" fanzines during the late 80's. On a final note, I must mention the project I've been working on, with a friend from Arizona. It is an American Morrissey fanzine called "Sing Your Life" and issue #2 will be out in late April. It will include a comprehensive U.S. tour diary (for the 2nd leg), along with many articles, information, and photos sent in by fans. To order that, please send $5 (cash/checks/m.o.) to: David Tseng 49 Gillman St. Irvine, CA 92715-2103 As of right now, SYL1 has sold out but we may be getting a few returned later. From: strangeways here we come Subject: Bengali Can anybody tell me what Morrissey is singing about in his song 'Bengali in Platforms',was he an architect? eamon From: strangeways here we come Subject: amnesty Hi, Like Michael Massengale I've seen the video of the Dallas concert and all I can say is that its one of the most annoying bootleg videos I've ever seen, just when you think you are about to see Morrissey the camera decides to point itself somewhere else.Michael said Morrissey played 'two' songs for Amnesty International.I only saw 'we hate it when our friends become successful' (reminded me somewhat of Our Frank)but what was the other one? I was at the Dublin concert in september where Moz said that some people said that he was musically ill.Everybody in the audience was sure that he would follow this with said song but he didnt!Chaos ensued. At the beginning of the concert Morrissey said "its great to be back home again"...does he say this at every concert or has his nationality changed? I've found that during his concerts Morrissey seems to love seeing his fans pushed around and squashed in their attempts to get close to the stage.Did anybody else notice this? Finally,I think that it would be better if mail to strangeways was sent out to all subscribers individually instead of in one large file,as is now the case.It would make it easier to reply to individual posts at the very least. What do the rest of you think? eamon acton "cstacton@orbsen.ucg.ie" Subject: Strangeways: Dream Academy Cover of "Please Please Please" From: "Kevin Y. Kawado" Greetings. There has been a recent surge of posts to rec.music.misc regarding the Smiths and various other stuff including the cover of the Smith's "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" by Dream Academy (an instrumental version). Here's the current version of my Ferris-file -- it ought to answer all your questions. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF -- The Soundtrack updated 25 October 1991 compiled by Lazlo Nibble (Ernie Longmire) -- lazlo@triton.unm.edu - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ There was never a soundtrack album released from the film FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, because director John Hughes didn't think that the diverse range of styles of songs in the movie would "work" on one album. The closest that they got to putting out a soundtrack was a promotional single with a couple of tracks from the movie; it was distributed at sneak previews and the like. (Dunno what's on it.) This listing's designed to help people find all the songs used in the movie so they can compile their own soundtrack tape. If you have information not included here, please send it to me. Maybe someday some enterprising bootlegger will pull these all together and release one of their own (hint hint). - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scene: Opening of the film, after Ferris spoofs his parents. Has anyone found it? I didn't know it even existed :-). Thanks for the info Dave and Lazlo! =K= From: "Rosenbla" Subject: Strangeways post I would like to know if there is anyone else who collects the inscriptions on Smiths and Morrissey 12" vinyl records. I am compiling a list of the ones that I have and would be interested in getting/trading with others in order to acquire those that I don't have. Please e-mail me if you're interested. Christine (rosenbla@ux.acs.umn.edu) From: Nicole.E.Nelson@Dartmouth.EDU Subject: Strangeways when i was in new york i picked up a bootleg " Morrissey 1959-1986" The first couple of tracks are from the smiths third live apperance, it does include Jeane, but also a track called BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. i've haven't heard wonderful woman in a long time- but it sounds the same , but i think that the words are different, but i'm not sure. does anyone know something about this track ????? I thought that the man on the poster for "A BOY WITH A THORN IN HIS SIDE" was a writer whose name has slipped my mind, i seemed to remember it wasn't Jimmy on the poster. nicolatta From: skrajew@aug1.augsburg.edu (Scott Krajewski) Subject: Smiths Single I have a question/favor to ask of you fellow fans. I would like information on Smiths singles that contain live or rare B-sides. I have found some by accident but I would like to learn of more. If I get enough of a response I'll post my findings for all. Thanks. "I started something ...." Scott From: gt7274c@prism.gatech.edu (Pi) Subject: Strange Sandie I have had a Sandie Shaw LP on vinyl for awhile, but I finally took it out of its sleeve and played it recently. On it is the cover Sandie did of "Hand In Glove", and a song that Morrissey and Stephen Street wrote called "Please Help The Cause Against Lonliness", it doesn't sound wonderful but the lyrics are pretty goo. The LP is kind of a 'who's who of Morrissey' friends, including appearances by all of the Smiths, Stephen Street, John Porter, Kevin Armstrong, Langer and Winstanley, Andrew Paresi and Chrissie Hynde. There are some so-so tunes on this LP, called "Hello Angel", and a tune called "Nothing Less Than Brilliant" which you just know Sandie wrote about and sung to Morrissey. Pi "When she calls me, I do not walk I run..."
