Welcome to... _________________________________________________ | \ | S T R A N G E W A Y S > |________________________________________________/ A forum for Morrissey and The Smiths. Volume 1, Issue #11 Well, we're back from our week's hiatus so it's time to start up discussion again. I suppose that everyone (except me :-( ) will be on vacation either this week or next week so I don't expect to receive much. Since volume has been relatively light this week, I've decided to include some refresher information for all the new members coming in and a few reminders for older members. Refresher information for new Strangeways members: Well, obviously, we're here to discuss the escapades and adventures of the various members of the original Smiths camp, including but not limited to Morrissey, Marr, Rourke, Joyce, Gannon and Street. Of course Morrissey's new (and continually shifting) band is often the topic of discussion, too. Strangeways is a moderated mailing list coming to you in a "journal" format. I say "moderated" because everything has to come to me, but I always try to include everything that comes to me. If someone has the resources to create a "spontaneous" mailing list that sends out posts to everyone as soon as they come in (similar to the now defunct "other-voices" group), please let me know. BTW, "other-voices" will continue under a different name, but "other-voices" itself will cease to exist in about a week or so (if you've been killing all the meaningless junk that's been coming in lately, and you didn't already know this). I, for one, am sorry to see it go, but...that's life. Alright...to post articles to Strangeways, please send mail to kkawado@bonnie.ics.uci.edu. Please put the subject of your post in the "Subject:" line (instead of just "Strangeways" as I previously suggested). If you have others who want to join the Strangeways mailing list, have them send mail to Michael.C.Massengale%mac.dartmouth.edu. And now that I'm finished babbling...here's some actual discussion for you. =K= ----- From: Pete Ashdown Subject: STRANGEWAYS Date: Wed, 13 Mar 91 12:49:54 MST Has anyone ever managed to find a copy of Dream Academy's instrumental of "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want"? This was done during the art-gallery scene of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" and was FABULOUS. A soundtrack for the picture was never released because of label disagreements. I'm just wondering if its a B-side somewhere, or if it even exists on CD (hope, hope, hope). ----- Date: Wed, 13 Mar 91 16:35:11 -0500 From: "Eric D. Wang" Subject: Moz books... Someone asked of the 2 books that Moz wrote(a long time ago)... one is called "James Dean Is Not Dead". I think the other is a biography on the New York Dolls(I'm getting this from the book "The Smiths - In Quotes"). But, I've read "James Dean Is Not Dead" because my friend is fascinated with Dean and he has it. It's very short(around 60-80 pages), filled with pictures, and Moz just tells how Dean's rise to movies, demise, and immortalization. I'm sorry I can't elaborate on it better. But, I think it's still in print(?). As for the other book, I think Moz had said in "The Smiths - In Quotes" that this biography on the New York Dolls has been out of print, and he hopes it'll stay that way(or along those lines). If anyone is interested in the Dean book, I'm sure I could find out the publisher, etc...just send me e-mail. I remember the name of one of the chapters in the book to be "Pity Me Because I'm Too Sensitive For This World And Everyone's Wrong Except Me"-Classic Morrissey?! Eric ----- Date: Wed, 13 Mar 91 23:13:20 EST From: Scott P Turner Subject: Joyce and Street Well, Mike Joyce sued Morrissey about a year ago...something about not getting his full quarter of the band's profits. We all know how Morrissey takes to law suits, so I doubt that they will work together again. About Street being the subject of Ouija Board, you didn't spell the name wrong (Stephen Street is correct), you just missed the entire meaning of the song. S-T-E-V-E-N refers to Morrissey himself (you forget that the man actually does have a first name). ----- Date: Thu, 14 Mar 91 10:10:35 GMT From: nmf%aberystwyth.ac.uk@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: steven street.. Hi, Morrissey and Steven street fell out over money street did not recieve for the single _interesting drug_ and he hindered its realease until the matter was solved, he hasnt worked with Morrissey since, infact in the next moz single _ouija board_ he the board spells s-t-e-v-e-n p-u-s-h o-double f good eh? Nick. P.s. who else thinks _he knows id like to see him_ is about johnny?????? ----- From: Simon Hughes Date: Fri, 15 Mar 91 15:33:24 GMT Subject: Strangeways: points arising from #10 Nicole writes >what does everyone think of Morrissey's (not including The Smiths) video's Well I've got Hulmerist which is a compilation of all the videos for Mozzer's singles up to and including November + one song from the infamous Wolverhampton gig. What makes a great package (for me) are the linking bits of shots of fans at that gig. Hilarious and, sometimes, touching in a rather silly way! K writes >where did this "Moz" originate from? Morrissey aka Moz aka The Mozzer aka El Mozo etc. Over here (UK) Moz is regarded as a bit of a flake and consistently has the piss taken out of him in print. Silly nicknames just help the process (plus they don't take so long to type)! (The worst offender is Swellsy in the NME, followed by Nicole, followed by me!!! :-) Nick writes >Stephen Street and Morrissey got a bit unfriendly because stephen didnt >get money for co writing/producing (i think) _interesting drug_ straight >away and the pair havent worked together since, if you listen to ouija board >the board spells s-t-e-v-e-n p-u-s-h o-f-f, can only mean him!!! > >Nick >P.s. i spelt steven wrong at the start!!!!! Hmm! This isn't too easy to understand. Do you mean that the lyric refers to Street or Moz? It has never occurred to me to think of the lyric as anything other than an example of Mozzer's self-deprecating humour. I.e. I always thought the lyric referred to Moz. However Moz does have a reputation for being rather spiteful so... Nonono, no I don't think that's what he meant, and you spelled Stephen Street's name correctly, I think. The "STEVEN" in Ouija Board is Morrisey himself. His name is, you know, Steven Patrick Morrisey. And the Ouija Board doesn't spell "PUSH OFF", it spells, "PUSH OOF". That's why the lady from the Carry On films starts reading that book called something like "How to improve your spelling" in the video. larsi@ifi.uio.no | Dreams kept away Lars Ingebrigtsen | She could never allow ----- From: kkawado@bonnie.ics.uci.edu Date: 23 March 1991 Subject: Questions and misc. discussion Well, questions first: has anyone ever seen the two Japanese "Smiths" releases that are supposedly "live" albums? I think I read about it in one of those big "CD Interational" catalogs but I've never actually seen either of them. Their names ellude me at the time but I think it was something like "Live at the National" and "Live at the Kilborn". I don't think this is correct because the National is in Kilborn but that's what sticks in my mind. Also, I don't think it was the same concert at "Rank" since "Rank" was also released in Japan. Nothing like three albums of the same concert :-). Comments about "Ouija Board". If you read the lyrics in _Bona Drag_, the spelling is S-T-E-V-E-N and P-U-S-H-O double F. I have no idea what this means, but everyone seems to be speculating that it has something to do with either Morrissey himself or Street. (A note on spelling: I've seen Morrissey's first name as both Stephen and Steven.) Personally, I don't think the spelling has anything to do with anyone. I think the ouija board is telling him (Steven) to not rely on supernatural powers or witchcraft to solve his personal problems (pushoff). The song in general seems to be about himself trying to resolve some burning desire to talk to a friend who has passed on, and as a last resort, consults an ouija board. Finally, yes, I think "He Know's I'd Love To See Him" is about Marr. Morrissey has stated many times that there is no bad blood (in his opinion) between the two and would gladly get back together with him. Morrissey just wants Marr to be happy in his musical endevours. I personally don't think this will ever happen, but who knows. =K=
