Something happened to my "compile" file for Strangeways #8 and I lost the stuff that was supposed to be posted here. I went back through old, deleted mail messages to try to salvage everything I received over the past few days. If you're post is not here (I know at least one is not), please send it to me again! My mailbox is exploding with mail from _other voices_, _chalkhills_, _ceremony_ and _flat-fields_ that everything is getting all mixed up. Please be sure to put "Strangeways" in the subject header of all posts to Strangeways. Thanks. Another idea I was thinking of: does someone want to work on getting all the lyrics to the Smiths/Morrissey albums typed in? It sounds like a neat idea. If interested, either in having the lyrics on-line or volunteering to type them in, please post. ----- Date: 05 Mar 91 17:37:13 From: Michael.C.Massengale%mac.dartmouth.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: Strangeways Well, I went to the good old bookstore to snag a copy of Kill Uncle. There it was, in all its glory, already nestled in the "M" section. First reaction: sweet artwork, let's get out of here with this baby. Second reaction: HOLY SHIT! $17 for 37 minutes of music? That's harsh! Third reaction: What's this? The re-release of The Smiths' Peel Session! And it's $7! Fourth reaction: Buy Peel Session, call home and have my girlfriend buy it for a reasonable price. She picked it up for $12, and even with the Priority Mail postage, it's still cheaper. So I have to wait until Thursday (and it better be there then). Fifth reaction (even though I have a paper due tomorrow and I haven't even started...) mosey over to the radio station and invoke DJ's privledges and tape the sucker. And guess what... no, it STILL hasn't arrived. Well, I guess I'll settle for everybody else's reviews that ought to be rolling in today. Maybe we'll have enough response for an issue? Michael, sans Kill Uncle ----- Date: 06 Mar 91 16:02:07 From: Michael.C.Massengale%mac.dartmouth.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: Strangeways It's getting ridiculous. I've held the CD in my hands, read the liner notes, but still haven't heard Kill Uncle yet. Would've copied it today, but all the studios at the radio station were being used, and I don't think they would've cared for me taking off with the only copy. In any case, let's get some discussion going! 1) What does everybody think of Kill Uncle? 2) Will there be a CD single release of Our Frank in the US? I think somebody on the list mentioned a different single being released in Australia. Is that right, and are there any different B-sides? 3) I've always been ticked about the cheap jewel cases that all of my imported Morrissey disc singles have come in, but I once saw some of them in real jewel cases. I was in a really in a hurry, and already owned the singles, so I didn't really look at them. Is there any difference besides the packaging. Are they maybe from other countries? [ Japanese CD singles always (almost always?) come in a "real" jewel case. The Japanese CDs available of Morrissey's singles are _Interesting Drug_, _Ouija Board, Ouija Board_, and _November Spawned a Monster_. I don't know when or if _Picadilly Pilare_ or _Our Frank_ will be released as a single from Japan (or when it'll be available here) =K= ] 4) I was told once that the UK pressing of Ouija Board, Ouija Board has a special edition painted CD single. Anybody know about it? [ The CD single disk is painted yellow with black squiglly lines coming down the sides. I don't think it's anything special and it wasn't dubbed a "limited edition" like the Cure's "Never Enough". Anyone else notice anything special about that disk? =K= ] OK, that ought to give you something to chew on. Everybody keep your ears open for tour info! Michael ----- Date: 06 Mar 91 16:05:36 From: Michael.C.Massengale%mac.dartmouth.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: Strangeways This swiped from the manc list... >Electronic release their 2nd single on >March 25 called - 'Get The Message/Free >Will'. The songs are written, performed >and produced by Bernard Sumner and >Johnny Marr. Anybody know about this or the album? Also, why can't we figure out exactly what Marr is doing? Has he ever considered doing solo material? Maybe we could get a list of everything he's contributed to. I think that would be as pertinent to our discography as the Morrissey solo work. Michael ----- Date: Tue, 5 Mar 91 19:22:29 -0800 From: "Michael A. Ramirez" Subject: Strangeways I just got _Kill Uncle_ and I think I will wait to pass judgment on the whole thing. In any case Our Frank is my favorite so far with Sing Your Life a close second. I am very pleased that Tony the Pony is on the CD because that is also a good track. Favorite Albums: The Queen Is Dead The Smiths Bona Drag Morrissey Starring at the Sea The Cure Music for the Masses Depeche Mode Substance New Order To name a few. These are not in any particular order, because I belive each of them has their own unique qualities and cannot be compared. --Mike ----- To: Like snow so silent underfoot Cc: ceremony%chsun1.uchicago.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU, kkawado@Bonnie.ics.uci.edu Subject: J. Marr and Electronic(was Re: Bernard & Neil) Date: Tue, 05 Mar 91 22:58:18 -0800 From: kkawado@Bonnie.ics.uci.edu [ This is from the _Ceremony_ newsgroup. Thought it might be interesting ] Greetings > Also, whatever became of J. Marr? I thought that originally, > Electronic was HIS and Bernard's project, with Tennant thrown in > to boot for the first single. The STRANGEWAYS mailing list tells me > that Marr has signed up with the Talking Heads... will he not be > appearing on the Electronic album? I think it WAS Sumner and Marr that created Electronic. I was impressed to see Marr playing a synthesizer at the concert, seeing how the Smiths really LOATHED synthesizers. I really didn't notice Tennant doing anything throughout the concert (not that he does much anyway). Marr is doing a number of things right now, including Electronic, The The, The Pretenders and possibly Talking Heads. All of these are tenative rumors right now. The The has a new single out that he is credited on. Hopefully we'll see more of Marr pretty soon. > >The album is supposed to be out fairly soon, as it had been completely > >recorded and is in the final mixdown/production phases as we speak.. > Excellent news! I anxiously await... &thanks for the info you've shared! I thought the album was supposed to be out at the beginning of February. Obviously this was not the case. Nonetheless, it should be out relatively soon (I hope). I remember seeing an article about it in a record store. =K= "Won't somebody stop me from thinking all the time" Kevin
