Welcome to... _________________________________________________ | \ | S T R A N G E W A Y S > |________________________________________________/ A forum for Morrissey and The Smiths. Volume 1, Issue #6 Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 12:39 EST From: Richard Locke Subject: Strangeways Greetings, I've been a Smiths fan for about 6 years and have most of their legitimate stuff in one form or another. Unfortunately, I've heard it all so many times that it [legit stuff] has gotten "old" ;-) Regarding some stuff I've seen discussed: I taped a Morrissey & Vinni Reilly song off the radio where they abort the session & laugh about it when someone hits the wrong note on the guitar -- is the is the giveaway single "I know Very Well How I Got My Note Wrong" someone mentioned? It sounds like it. You gotta hear it, it's great. (Purely a stroke of luck that I taped it...) There was some discussion about the broadcast concert that eventually became "Rank". Does anyone know for sure the date of that performance? In any case, I have a tape of the radio concert which include "How Soon Is Now", which didn't make it onto Rank for some unknown reason. I couldn't identify any other songs which they played that didn't get onto Rank... Anyone got authoritative info on this? I'm heavily into live tape trading. This is what I have from the Smiths: demos and live tracks, 1983-1986 (g-vg+, 60m) (possibly from vinyl "a nice bit of meat" boot) greek theatre, berkely, ca, 8-23-86 (ex-, 70m) Rockpalast 5/4/84 (video) (ex-, 60m) better live than dead (vg+, 45m) (originally from BBC radio broadcast, not Rank) other: I have the Sandie Shaw stuff and some fan club 7"ers taped... Send me e-mail {uunet!pdn!locke} if you want to trade. I trade lots of other bands, too. Finally, here's song lists for misc. live & rare stuff I have: Demos/live sweet and tender hooligan (demo), how soon is now, frankly mr. shankly (both live), half a person (demo), meat is murder, the queen is dead (both live), london, is it really so strange (both demos), bigmouth strikes again (live), shoplifters of the world (demo), panic, the boy with the thorn in his side, whats the world (all 3 live), purple haze (soundcheck), cemetary gates misc b-sides & stuff (some has been release on the Morrisey album): draize train instrumental, pretty girls make graves (featuring audrey riley), some girls are bigger than others (live brixton '86), hand in glove, i don't owe you anything, jeanne (3 from sandie shaw) last..playboy, michael's bones, ouija board..., yes, i am blind, east west, november spawned a monster fan club 7" Playbox, London '85: heaven knows I'm miserable now, jeane, this charming man, hand in glove fan club 7" Goodbye to Elvis, Scotland '85: still ill, rusholme ruffians, what she said, what's the world fan club 7" Radio Sessions: is it really so strange, london, sweet and tender hooligan, half a person Better Live than Dead: william it was really nothing, nowhere fast, what she said, hand in glove, how soon is now?, stretch out, that joke isn't funny anymore, shakespeare's sister, meat is murder, miserable lie, barbarism begins at home [ Send mail directly to Richard if you are interested in obtaining these albums. He will work out something with you. I suggest instead of sending tapes that you send him about $2.00 per tape (for the tape and postage). Lars will be compiling the Morrissey KROQ interview and the Concert that they played on the radio (parts of it were from _Rank_). I haven't sent him the tapes yet, so don't expect it out for a little while. He will post to Strangeways when it's ready. =K= ] [ Richard - My copy of _Better Live Than Dead_ will probably go out on Monday, so expect it around the end of the week. Let me know if it doesn't get there. =K= ] ----- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 21:09:21 PST From: CAR-RT SORT 28-Feb-1991 0928 Subject: STRANGEWAYS "This Charming Man" New York City Mix Hi, This is my first posting to S/W so I'll give a quick intro before my question. My name is Edward Arthur, I work for Digital Equipment Corp in the Boston area but am originally from the New York area. I've been listening to the Smiths since the very first time I heard "This Charming Man" whenever it came out ('83?) - I'm certainly NOT known for my memory! I've never seen the Smiths live - I was out of town but times they toured although my younger brother saw them and said it was the best show he'd ever seen. I'm looking forward to catching Morrissey on his solo tour but I may not go if the venue is too large... Now for my question. Is there such as thing as the New York City mix of "This Charming Man"? Some friends of mine have asked me to buy them a copy but I've never seen one...supposedly it was a US release on vinyl and is a rare collector's item...so, DOES IT EXIST? Thanks, Ed "Why are you being so reasonable now?" ----- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 22:08:07 -0800 From: "Michael A. Ramirez" Hello, I am looking for a bootleg of a festival know as the G-Mex Festival that took place in Machester in July of '86. The bands on the venue included The Smiths (of course), A Certain Ratio, The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, and New Order. Please e-mail or post if you wish. Intro: Michael A. Ramirez I am a freshman at the University of California at Berkeley. I intend to major in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. I first heard The Smiths on a college radio station when How Soon Is Now? came out. From that time I didn't here much from them, until last year. When a friend (you know who you are :) ) started to play their music. Now I am a semi-collector. Favorite Songs: How Soon Is Now? There is a light that never goes out. I hope to hear from someone who has a copy of the above bootleg. Wonderful Woman was the B-side of the (1st) UK 12" release of the This Charming Man single. A lot of people accuse Moz of having a droning whining voice and offhand I can't think of better evidence than this song! It is a bit of a dirge!! Pleasant though --- "When she calls me, I do not walk I run" Actually its the only Smiths song I know that has had two completely different titles and lyrics. What I mean is that there was an early Smiths song called `What Does She See in Him' which had completely different lyrics to Wonderful Woman but the same music. I've only ever seen it in one place which was a bootleg tape of one of their early gigs (the earliest I've seen bootlegged). Marc Howard Anderson writes >Also, I heard a rumor a while back that there were plans to possibly >release a collection of Smiths unreleased songs including a cover of New >Order's "Blue Monday". Has anyone else heard similar rumors? I think this is referring to the deliberate hoax I saw in a British music rag. Could have been an Aprils fool joke but I don't remember. Moz did record a session for John Peel's BBC radio program but he didn't like it so it was never broadcast. Bet there's a bootleg of it somewhere! The Smiths did at least three Peel sessions (from memory) Handsome Devil, Reel Around the Fountain, Miserable Lie, What Difference Does It Make This Charming Man, Back to the Old House, This Night has Opened my Eyes, Still Ill Nowhere Fast, Rusholme Ruffians, Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want, ? They also did a few sessions for other radio programs. E.g. some of the Hatfull of Hollow tracks are from a David Jensen session. The UK release of Kill Uncle (all 33 mins of it!) should be out 4 March. Simon [ Is _Kill Uncle_ THAT short? That's rather disappointing! =K= ] [ By the way, the official release date for the United States is 5 March (Tuesday). I think it might be out right now...some big record stores get all their stuff in before release dates. =K= ] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Simon Hughes, Dept. of Computing, Imperial College. Email: sph@doc.ic.ac.uk ----- From: Simon Hughes Date: Fri, 1 Mar 91 14:46:26 GMT Subject: Strangeways: Discography A few bits and bobs arising from the discography in Strangeways #5. Everything here refers to UK Rough Trade releases unless otherwise stated. There was a 12" of Shakespears Sister with extra track `Stretch Out and Wait'. The 7" of Girlfriend in a Coma was backed with `Work is a Four Letter Word', not I Keep Mine Hidden. I believe that I Started Something and Stop Me if You've Heard this One Before were corresponding US and UK releases. But I can't remember which was for which country! Whichever was released in the UK had a cassette release which included Pretty Girls Make Graves (radio session version?), Some Girls are Bigger than Others (live, with extra verse) and What's the World (live cover of a James song). Incidentally the videos for ISS and SMIYHTOB were exactly the same!
