Welcome to... _________________________________________________ | \ | S T R A N G E W A Y S > |________________________________________________/ A forum for Morrissey and The Smiths. Volume 1, Issue #5 Date: 27 Feb 91 18:32:00 EST From: JON P BAKER Subject: Strangeways - bootlegs I am at Indiana, a junior, and listening to the Smiths since '88. (Indiana University Bloomington...) Of my collection I have the two bootlegs I have not seen listed: Smiths Live at Brixton (Only title I was given was Brixton) and a Smiths concert recorded by the BBC. On the BBC concert, Morrissey at one point says "The jolly BBS is recording this, so if anyone has anything clever to say, say it now and go down in history." A friend bought the tape at a used bookstore in CT, and it was a horrid recording, so I piped it through a equalizer, selectively used Dobly B to edit out rought spots. It came out rather well, except the first song on one side is garbled. Also, the first song on one is "Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty", except that the entire (as far as I can tell) song is sung, instead of just the prelude part to "The Queen is Dead". I will include a listing of the songs on both concerts in another post. Jon ----- from: kkawado@bonnie.ics.uci.edu Subject: Strangeways - new morrissey Re: the bootlegs...Jon...the second bootleg you mentioned ("this is being taped by the jolly bbc") is _Better Live than Dead_...I think. It may be parts of the concert that were left out. I've noticed that most of the concert tapes sound very similar. Can we make a copy of it? =K= ----- From: JPBAKER%IUBACS.BITNET%uicvm.uic.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: STRANGEWAYS BBC Concert Tape (Meat is Murder Tour, I think): William it was really nothing / What she Said / Hand in Glove / How soon is Now / Stretch out and wait / That Joke isn't funny anymore / Shakespeare's Sister / Meat is Muder / Miserable Lie / Barbarism starts at home [I'm almost sure this is _Better Live Than Dead_] "Brixton Concert" (I don't know which tour) Take Me Back to dear old blighty (full version) / Some girls are bigger than others / Shoplifters of the world unite / Cemetery gates / This night has opened my eyes / Still Ill / Panic / The Queen is dead / William it was really nothing / Bigmouth strikes again / Vicar in a tutu / Frankly Mr Shankly / ("To die by your side..." can't find title) / I want the one I can't have / Is it really so strange Jon ----- [If you missed this report...here it is again. If you do find out information which is very important and you would like it distributed immediately, send copies to both Michael and myself. I will include it in the next issue of Strangeways, but Michael can send out the report when he gets it. I just heard the preview of Morrissey's _Kill Uncle_. Here's a list of songs on the album: Our Frank Asian Rut Seeing Your Life Mute Witness King Leer (note the LEER) Found, Found, Found Driving Your Girflfrind Home The Harsh Truth of the Camera Eye I'm the End of the Family Line There's A Place In Hell for Me and My Friends Tony the Pony Special Note!!! Tony the Pony is not supposed to be on the album. There are a few copies out right now (American only, supposedly) that have the cut on it. It should be available this Friday! Try to find the album with Tony the Pony on it...the English and Japanese versions will NOT have this cut on it and future reprints of the American version will also disappear. Sounds like some classic hits here. I like "There's a Place In Hell for Me and My Friends"...the lyrics that make Morrissey. "Driving Your Girl- friend Home" sounds like it'll be a classis hit too. The album as a whole seems very desolate and lonesome, but not like _Viva Hate_. There's also a lot of variety in the music. I suggest getting it as soon as possible. =K= Kevin Kawado "Won't somebody stop me from thinking all the time" ----- Date: Wed, 27 Feb 91 18:37:45 PST From: lars%cs.uoregon.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: Smiths Compilation Tape. Kevin, One other guy responded and offered an interview from after the "Meat is Murder" album came out. Maybe, together with the interview and the radio concert you have, this will be enough to fill a tape? How long are the interview and the radio concert you have? I'll wait a few days to see if more people respond before I do anything. -Lars [ If anyone is interested in submitting material for this compilation tape, please send mail to Lars (address above). Please do not send requests for tapes yet. I'm sure he'd like to make a compilation before actually making copies for everyone. Info will be posted when this tape is available =K= ] ----- Date: 28 Feb 91 12:50:39 From: Nicole.E.Nelson%mac.dartmouth.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: Re: Strangeways, new cd Kill Uncle should be released In the US next weeek. ----- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 15:08:43 -0500 From: "Eric D. Wang" Subject: New Morrissey LP Alright, I read your bulletin and I am interested in getting a copy of 'Better Live Than Dead'. Can you help me? If you can, than let me know how I could get a copy from you. I just got on the Smiths news bulletin or whatever it's called...and I don't know how to post any damn bulletins up... I was thinking of putting up a track listing of 'Kill Uncle', and possibly you could do it for me (that is, if you didn't mind). I got the track listing from a record store here at my school...so, here it is, a track listing of the new LP: side 1 side 2 ------ ------ Our Frank Found Found Found Asian Rut Driving Your Girlfriend Home Sing Your Life The Harsh Truth Of The Camera Eye Mute Witness (I'm) The End Of The Family Line King Leer There's A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends Tony The Pony The cover of the album has the Moz with hands in the air, and the photo is shot under him(much like Bona Drag). The cover is a lot like Bona's, but I think I like this one better. And there is to be a video for 'Our Frank'. Well, thanks and let me know about a tape of 'Better Live Than Dead'. Thanx again, Eric [ Eric, could you wait for a little while? I'm real busy right now, but I think Lars may start doing some tape distribution for our members. This hasn't been organized just yet but will be soon (I hope). =K= ] ----- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 13:18 EST From: GGTZEUTSCHLE%AMHERST.BITNET%yalevm.ycc.yale.edu@ICS.UCI.EDU Subject: STRANGEWAYS: Morissey/Smiths appearances on compilations Someone mentioned yesterday that "Work Is A Four Letter Word" (Smiths) and "Will Never Marry" (Moz) appear on Sire compilations. Right. WIAFLW is on the first, _Just Say Yes_, released 1987, cat. # 9 25665-2 WNM is from _Just Say Yo_, 1988 (sorry I copied this -- no cat. #) Then there are "Lucky Lisp" (_Just Say Mao_, 1989, 9 25947-2) and "November Spawned a Monster" (_Just Say Da_, 1990, sorry, also a copy). All of these are, of course, Sire releases, and available only on CD. (Anyone know why samplers are so often available only on CD -- Nettwerk does the same with CD's, as do Warner (or whoever it is that makes _Theodore_) and Windham Hill?) These CD's have largely excellent mixes of little known music (with some exceptions of course). A Manchester music compilation just came out, too, (not Stone Roses -- Inspiral Carpets -- Happy Mondays Manc ... their precursors, with lots of hip-hop but no New Order/Joy Division!) that includes "Handsome Devil". I'll find the name of the thing when I do my show tonight. GGATz. ----- You should also receive a compiled discography with this issue. If you have any changes to it (specifically release dates) please send them in. I know I haven't listed all the bootlegs and other miscellaneous Smiths memorabelia out there. Thanks to Nicole and Michael for originally typing in the two discographies. =K=
