What a time I had! 4 days of sun, elephant ears, anything liquid and bands picking on me. Couldn't have been anything but Cornerstone '95! Would I trade it in for anything? NAH! Well, except for one certain robot from Kansas City, who needs to stay home next year.. I went with my church friends (I was the sole death metal lover amidst the sea of Tooth & Nail fanaticism) on the 18-hour drive from Laurel, MD to Bushnell, IL.. Oh yeah, went to a rave for the first time in my life.. it was weird.. real weird! Fun, but weird.. it only rained about an hour for the whole time there (C-Stone record).. the BBQ was okay but my friend Dave from Shredhead Disciples Mag wasn't there (he couldn't find it) so I felt completely awkward, narfed some burgers and split.. I only bought 2 t-shirts (long sleeved LIVING SACRIFICE and short sleeved THE CRUCIFIED).. and got popped in the left eye during moshing to THE CRUCIFIED, SIX FEET DEEP and AETURNUS (three different nights!).. spent a lot of time with my buds in Aeturnus and CRIMSON THORN.. Finally, to Jim (THE CRUCIFIED/THE BLAMED): I'm really glad we got to talk again.. and you didn't put your finger in my lunch again! * The Review * Cornerstone '95, Bushnell, IL, June 29 - July 2 Well, first of all, I got to hear GROMS' CD, "Ascension", and it is magnificent! Totally mid-paced death metal and very well put-together! LOVEWAR played at the Heaven's Metal tent (oh yeah, Doug Van Pelt reads Screams of Abel, can you believe it?!), and they were cool! Tight and innovative live, they cranked with old and new tunes.. At the Encore II tent, ARGYLE PARK played for the first and the last time.. their heavier songs they do alongside Mark Saloman and the dudes from MORTAL are excellent, however, their dancier and more ambient material was too "busy" and "dancy" for me.. Before ARGYLE PARK came Mark Saloman and Jeff Bellew's new band - STAVESACRE.. they're more groove/hardcore and didn't do anything for me live (sorry guys).. After STAVESACRE and ARGYLE PARK came CIRCLE OF DUST, and they were not only tight musically but more vocal than when I saw them in Philadelphia, or so it seemed.. only drawback for them was that one of their TVs went on the fritz.. THE CRUCIFIED was not only the best show of Cornerstone, but for many of us the most emotional, since it was only a reunion show (including Greg Minier, folks!).. famous tunes like "Your Image" and "Mindbender" and the golden oldie "Directed Youth" were soooo nice to hear again by the original (minus 2 bassists) Crucified.. they can reform anytime.. Encore II was packed with fans of one of the most famous of all Christian bands.. I also got to hear POSSESSION's "Eternally Haunt".. whee! Mercyful Fate meets death metal.. creepy yet.. cool! I also got to hear THINKTANK's upcoming 2-song demo.. it's thrash/industrial.. heavier than CIRCLE OF DUST, believe it or not.. I would've liked SIX FEET DEEP better if, by the time they played (third night at Encore II), I didn't suffer from Hardcore Burnout.. Tooth & Nail needs to bring in FEWER bands next year, please???!!!!! THE BLAMED managed to play one KLANK tune.. Klank lost their bassist prior to the show, so while he played for The Blamed he got one song out.. it was immense! Death/grind fantasy, a welcome change.. The Blamed were ok but typical (sorry, Jim - just not my bag).. AETURNUS was a breath of fresh air! Even though they were stuck playing the 5 Minute Walk Tent for only 30 mins on the last day, they weren't bad at all, even though they lost their lead guitarist and didn't have too many leads down.. learn those leads, John.. Meanwhile, following Aeturnus was CRIMSON THORN, and they were nice and brutal - total low end greatness.. serious cure from Hardcore Abuse.. I missed most of SERENADE's set when they played the 5 Minute Walk Tent 2 hrs before AETURNUS.. Serenade were '80s female led metal.. a bit corny but nice reminder of the "good old days".. Cornerstone '95 was an interesting experience.. even though some awesome bands played like CRIMSON THORN and THE CRUCIFIED, good bands like AETURNUS and KLANK, and I had the best time with my friends from Indiana, my friends from Canada (Deathead Disciples Mag Gang), and the bands I bonded with, the overwhelming spectre of hardcore was too much for me to handle, and I sincerely request Cornerstone to chill out on the excessiveness of one musical style next year.. See ya next year.. unless you ask the question, "Are they heavy?".. * End of Review * That's it!
