I received St. Louis thrash band GRIEVANCE HONOR's demo this week.. no comment.. Finally, a concert review: THE CALM, Christian Center, Alexandria, VA Sun Mar 12 So what if I'm in DC laying out in the sun sleeping, trying to fight the flu, just a bit late for the concert? I'm still going to be there and support my friends in THE CALM! It doesn't hurt that they've gone seriously heavy progressive metal, and my close friend and Screams staff writer Erik just hates progressive metal, so after years of being tortured by his love of punk and ska - it's MY TURN! They played for 90 minutes with all original songs including 3 acoustic sets. They played my two favorites, "The Calm That Rules The Storm" and "Down In The Valley". There were times when I missed hearing that "second guitar" heard on their original demo; when the lead guitarist, P. J. Bussey (TAKER, ARMAGEDDON), would go off to wail, all that was left to support was the bassist, Danny Wilkinson, to pick up the slack. It convinced me that when it came to riff time it'd be better to have two guitars to fill out the bottom end. Unlike most female singers involved with metal, Ellen Bussey has more of a gothic feel in her voice, definitely a more pleasant and fitting touch to the progressive style. No high-pitched squeals or attempts in sounding "manly", she has a smooth, moody voice that I find interesting, provided I've never been a fan of female-led bands. If you like really heavy yet melodic progressive metal, give The Calm a listen. You'll be hearing more from them after their CD is released in May. It was a great concert! I need to torture Erik more often! Phil (metalhed@capaccess.org) That's it! Next week, more things for you to ponder and sit in awe about!
