The city has done a large transformation in this twelve year absence. Times Square is cleaner and more sanitized than ever, with hardly a trace of sexuality of any kind. The South Street Seaport is an amazing restoration of old rundown warehouses into very chic shoppes and restaurants, and Soho, as well, has been changed into boutiques and galleries. But the main reason for the trip was, naturally, Barbara Cook and THEATRE. In a week we managed to get in 9 shows. Usually there are a few dogs when one sees this many events, but not this time, I don't know whether it was luck or planning. What a rare treat to see BARBARA COOK at the Café Carlyle. I have seen her so many times over the years, and other than her Broadway shows, my favourite concerts were at the small intimate clubs like Brothers and Sisters, and Reno Sweeney. We have also been fortunate enough to see her in Toronto at the Bayview Playhouse, The Music Hall and at the Stratford Festival, in concert. The problem with the Café Carlyle, although the waiters and bartenders try hard, is the clink of china, the chatter from the kitchen and the bar, and some of the patrons. Ms. Cook deserves to have our undivided attention. Her set was based on Gower Champion shows, and opened with her offstage singing "Before the Parade Passes By," instead of her usual trademark song "Sing a Song With Me." Her programme included songs from Carnival, Hello Dolly, Happy Time, Irene and Forty Second Street. Barbara Cook is the greatest cabaret singer of them all and is worth the trip to New York. Both she and her accompanist Wally Harper just received a well-deserved Cabaret lifetime achievement award. We were also fortunate enough to talk with her after the concert, and of course she always leaves me tongue tied as I am in awe of such a talent. The other highlight was Julie Taymor's brilliant LION KING. I thought it would be basically a children's show having seen the animated film. What a surprise! I have never in 50 years of theatre seen anything so spectacular. If you only see one theatrical event in your entire lifetime, this should be it. The ensemble is amazing. Standing room, as it is a complete sellout, was effortless. The time flew by. There are not enough adjectives to describe the event, and I do not want to give too much away so as to spoil anyone's evening of theatre at its greatest. Other musicals we saw were Frank Wildhorn's THE CIVIL WAR. It was still in previews and needed some work on the first act which did not flow well. The second act was much better. Mr. Wildhorn cannot get the critics praises, even with two other shows still running, The Scarlet Pimpernel and Jekyll & Hyde. His music is very contemporary, and he manages to write every style, from popular to rock to spiritual, unfortunately all in one show. We finally saw MISS SAIGON , something which I could not muster much interest when it played in Toronto, but actually quite liked it. There are some great songs, the highlights being The American Dream and The Last Night of the World. I suppose you would call MARLENE a musical as well. Sian Phillips, a Welsh actress, recreates the magic of Marlene Dietrich, down to the mannerisms as well as the unmistakable Dietrich voice, and the stance. In plays, we saw the long lost Tennessee Williams NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES, which was found by Vanessa Redgrave, and stars her brother Corin Redgrave. It is a very ambitious production which originated in London, running over 3 hours in length.Considering it was written very early on in Mr. Williams career, it is a very polished play and certainly keeps the audience spellbound. The entire ensemble are very convincing and it is a great prison drama. We also got to see the wonderful Dame Judi Dench in David Hare's AMY'S VIEW. Although the play is quite interesting, your attention is always on Judi Dench, even when the conversation does not include her. I have only seen her twice on stage, the other being London Assurance, which is an hysterical British period comedy. Another British Import from the Royal Court Theatre is part of a trilogy, and last year's Tony award winner, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, was part of this. The new play is THE LONESOME WEST, and is an extremely well acted ensemble cast, directed by Garry Hynes, who was the first lady to win a Tony for Direction, followed by Julie Taymor of The Lion King. The final play was THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP, a campy melodrama with a cast of two playing many parts. This is one of the products of the great Charles Ludlam, who died of AIDS in 1987. We have now booked a trip to London in early October. Among the theatre highlights playing currently are the musicals Beauty and the Beast, Blood Brothers, Buddy, Candide (one of my all time favourite shows), Dr. Doolittle, Finian's Rainbow, Mamma Mia (based on Abba's music), Marianne Faithful: Vagabond Ways, Oklahoma (which is the talk of London with this revival), 110 Degrees in the Shade, Rent, Rocky Horror Show, Saturday Night Fever, West Side Story, another great revival, and Whistle Down the Wind, scheduled for Broadway in 2000. In the play department we have Animal Crackers, Drummers, An Inspector Calls, Life is a Dream, Lenny (with Eddie Izzard), Money, Scenes from an Execution, Shock Headed Peter, Some Explicit Polaroids, Triumph of Love, Woman in Black and The Weir. One can see more shows inLondon as there are matinees on different days, as well as early shows usually on Friday and Saturday. We have also booked subscriptions to the Royal Alexandra/Princess of Wales here for seven shows including The Lion King (which I anticipate seeing again), the British revivals of Pajama Game and Oliver, the New York revival of Cabaret, the Canadian answer to Riverdance, Needfire, and the plays Art, Enigma Variations with Donald Sutherland, now playing in L.A., and the new play The Memory of Water 1999 promises to be a great year for theatre. Although a large percentage of this year's theatre is revivals, they are worthwhile revivals, and among them some masterpieces, like Williams long-lost Nightingales. There are so many shows I would like to see "revived." I'm sure that over the next few years, unless some new musical writers, and playwrights come along, I will have my wish. ********************************** ˇ Check out my new alphabetical site of New York, London, Toronto, and International Theatres. All three of the brothers gravitated to the theatre holding down numerous jobs. Sam gained the touring rights to a play and they were on their way. They leased the Herald Square Theatre in New York and booked Arizona (1900). They became the largest theatre owners in N.Y.C., and the most active producers in America. Sam was killed in a train crash -1905. Between 1901 and 1954 Messrs. Shubert produced 520 plays on Broadway, largely musicals, including many of the popular operettas of the day, Maytime (17), Blossom Time (21), Student Prince (24), Life Begins at 8:40 (34), Hellzapoppin (38). The principal theatres owned by the Shuberts were the Shubert, Winter Garden, and Princess. The Shubert archives remain housed in the Lyceum Theatre. The Shubert Organization remains today run by two native New Yorkers, Bernard B. Jacobs (1916- ) and Gerald Schoenfeld (1924- ). 1x-What seperates the heavy hitters from the rest of the pack? ZIEGFELD THEATRE- Possibly the finest theatre ever built in New York City, financed by William Randolph Hearst and designed by Joseph Urban and Thomas Lamb. Opened in 1927 with the Ziegfeld production of Rio Rita. The theatre was a jewel box of gilt, and rich unburnished colours with spacious backstage facilities. Other Ziegfeld shows were Showboat (27); Bitter Sweet (29); and Ziegfeld Follies of 1931. After Ziegfeld's death the large theatre became a cinema, until Billy Rose restored it in 1944. Later such shows as Brigadoon (47), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (49), and Kismet (53). It was torn down in 1966 to make a skyscraper.
