Sigel says companies like eBenX and Phase Forward have a better chance to make it to the winners' circle "than a myriad of content or e-commerce companies (More.com, DrKoop, Mediconsult, PlanetRx, HealthCentral.com), each proclaiming the merits of its content or 'customer experience'- while dollars fly out the door at an accelerating rate." Warning that "the Internet health field is due for a huge correction," Sigel says another attribute of successful companies will be that "the people running the company are dedicated to building a business piece by piece, customer by customer, rather than creating an overnight sensation via financial wizardry." In its latest e-mail bulletin, eHealth Insider says the market cap of 19 key Internet health companies was $16 billion as of March 10, down 22% in a two-week period. The biggest eHealth stock by market cap, Healtheon/WebMD, has lost 32% of its market value in a two-week period. Commenting on Healtheon's blizzard of deals, eHealth Insider says, "The electronic transaction that Healtheon will soon be most accomplished at has nothing do with managed care claims ... or physician payments. What Healtheon really excels at is creating new shares of stock." eHealth Insider is published by Corporate Research Group, which also publishes four other healthcare industry newsletters.
