Nancy Boy, the act for the '90's - Ed. ############################################## CHILD SUPPORT DEBACLE A friend I know is really caught in the jaws of a system run amok. He used to work at a tire plant, and made pretty good wages (about 18.00/hr). He and wife got divorced; a child support agreement was reached. Then, the tire plant laid off all their workers. He was stuck with $470.00 a month in child support, plus insurance costs, and little or no income. Could not get it changed. The wife is allowed to deduct the child on her income taxes too - so she gets a healthy sum back from the IRS. He pays and pays, and gets no deduction. So now he is about ready to go ON WELFARE to get out of the payments. He even said word to the effect of, "let them put me in jail; then, the state can support me and my wife too, as they will have to compensate her for lost payments, etc" Wonderful system that causes people to drop out like this! There has to be some rationality in government. It's not enough to say that people should not get divorced, that that's what they get, etc. If someone has a loss of income due to unforeseen circumstances (and note all the downsizing going on these days) they should damn well be allowed to modify their child support payments. Otherwise, more and more will be tempted to drop out. (My friend is under constant stress, and has migraines, probably due in part to the impossible bind he finds himself in). And folks wonder why people go on welfare! VICTORY IN COLORADO. In a happy victory for the Gay/Lesbian community, the Supreme Court overturned a Colorado bill denying legal protections for homosexuals. The majority decided there was no reason to single out homosexuals for denial of protections. Thank God that there is some sanity out there. Special rights and Equal rights are two different matters. Members of Congress have some special rights and privileges (due to their position). They might get free postage, some free parking, etc, etc. Blacks, Native Americans, and Gays/Lesbians just want Equal rights. Equal rights does not imply a place at the head of the line - only the right to be in line. Not a place at the head table ahead of everyone else - only a place in the same restaurant as everyone else, regardless. It seems the justices realized this, and acted accordingly (at least the majority did). A happy day for dame justice indeed. CLINTON BACKS DOWN. Against Gay marriages? For Gay rights? What is a fundamental right in our society if not to marry someone. C'mon - sure, half a loaf is better than none, but just try to tell blacks or anyone else, "we support your rights but forbid you to marry!" I wish there were a third candidate to vote for in November. Maybe I'll vote Libertarian... Too bad, just after the Supreme Court decision too. The son of 60's music star Donovan teamed up with the son of one of the Monkees and some others, and are calling themselves Nancy Boy. This name is a British term for androgynous folks, or men well in touch with their feminine side. Go out and buy their music (one opinion). This group could outdo Prince and Boy George combined, and the lead singer (well, ok, all of them) really display some talent. Donovan has had a busy modeling career in his own right, and this group is "frosting" on his cake. Go out and get their music. Our Republicanized, right-wing, back-to-the-trees political and social scene could really use a shot in the arm like this group, Nancy Boy.
