>From Chicago: Dial 'El' for murder ... it's ---------------------------------------------- Letterman News for Thursday, February 17, 1994 Issue #1 A new electronic sheet, published irregularly ---------------------------------------------- 4. E! RERUN SCHEDULE WEEK OF 2/14/94 The E! entertainment television cable network broadcasts reruns of _Late Night with David Letterman_ "seven Daves a week" at 10 p.m. Eastern time. Monday through Friday, the previous night's reruns can also be viewed at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Eastern. The following schedule was taken from the E! update line at (213) 954-2750. Punch 1 at any time during the opening greeting for special E! programs and this schedule. Mon 02/14 Sting, Lily Tomlin (aired 11/5/85) Tue 02/15 Bruce Willis, Letitia Baldrige, Charlie Hill (12/9/85) Wed 02/16 Valerie Perrine, Neil Slavin (5/8/86) Thu 02/17 Cybill Shepherd, Mac, Gert Mulvin (5/7/86) Fri 02/18 Fred Willard, Jack Coleman, Morgan Brittany (5/21/86) Sat 02/19 Jimmy Breslin, Jack Hanna (7/21/86) Sun 02/20 Ivan Lendl, Ziggy Marley, Marshall Silver (9/29/86) 3. JAY'S STEAMED Too bad Jay Leno doesn't have Helen Kushnick as his handler anymore. The original "Helen, the Ill-Tempered Ticket Lady" could have called up the _Late Night with Conan O'Brien_ folks and screamed obscenities at them for booking David Letterman as a guest on the 12:35 show for Monday, February 28th. _E. T._ is reporting that Jay is peeved at Conan, not merely for booking Jay's chief competitor, but (a) for not informing anyone at _Tonight_ of the scheduling -- Jay had to read about it in the papers -- and, on top of that, (b) because on the day Conan was named the new _Late Night_ host, Jay had him booked immediately on _Tonight_ and *even went so far* as to *bump* a scheduled guest. Wow ... Jay bumped a guest once. My guess is that a new talk-show war is brewing -- who gets the _Tonight_ show when NBC finally dumps Jay's sorry ass! Canny move, Conan. 2. _LATE SHIFT_ AUTHOR ON "LATER" TONIGHT Bill Carter, a t.v. and entertainment reporter for _The New York Times,_ will be Bob Costas's guest tonight on _Later._ Why NBC allowed this booking is a mystery to me: apparently Bob's new contract is so secure, and network brass are so grateful that Costas has agreed to extend his _Later_ stint later than he'd planned (new host Greg Kinnear's set in L.A. was busted up by the earthquake) that this week, Bob could interview Howard Stringer if he wanted. For those who don't know, Carter is the author of a recently-published ultimate insider's account of the late-night talk show wars, called _The Late Shift._ Consensus among those of us who've read the book is that it's pro-Letterman, as it all but crowns Dave the new king of the night, and supplies ample evidence that the executives picked by General Electric to run NBC were, in fact, weasels. _Later_ airs at 12:35 Eastern; the Carter interview is a one- parter. By the way, S. Trowbridge tells us Kinnear's first guest on 2/28 will be Julia-Louis Dreyfus of _Seinfeld._ (We assume this means Greg is searching for ways to become master of his new domain.) 1. MOM'S A HIT Ginny Holbert reports in this morning's _Chicago Sun-Times_ that the Feb. 14th _Late Show_ featuring the premiere of Dave's Mom's Olympic reports (and her interview with First Lady H. R. Clinton), "Super" "Dave" Osborne, and "Top Ten Fabio Pick-up Lines" read by the Italian love-god himself, was Dave's highest-rated show since its debut on August 28, 1993. The reasons seem pretty clear: CBS produced special "Dave's Mom" spots, word of mouth spread quickly once Dave announced on the show last week that this was not a gag and that Hillary Clinton would be Mom's first guest, and there was that agreement binding all CBS affiliates to air _Late Show_ at its "live" broadcast time during the Winter Olympics: 11:35 Eastern, except on February 21st and 25th, when prime-time coverage will run one-half hour late and _Late Show_ will air at 12:05. Weasel stations will return to running Dave after _Studs_ or reruns of _M*A*S*H_ on the 28th. If you live in a market that normally carries Dave on a delayed basis, this would be an excellent opportunity for you to write station management and tell them how much you're enjoying watching the show at this "new" time. ------------------------------ Send Letterman news and comments about this electronic sheet to letterman@mcs.net Entire contents Copyright (C) 1994 by Aaron Barnhart.
