I don't want to clog their mailboxes with the huge digest version. MCD] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Ms. Duncan, Thank you for the wonderful review at Bookdragon. Christine Feehan, author of Dark Prince ============================================= EDITOR'S DESK: Keeping Up With Melanie ============================================= As if the holiday season weren't already hectic enough, I just finished a two-part interview for KEYSTROKES (http://www.writelinks.com), an online writer's zine and community started by Janet Kent, a library patron of mine at my first library job. Keystrokes blossomed from a community of 200 to over 5,000 in its first two years by word of mouth, so remember to tell your friends about The Bookdragon Review [shameless plug :-)]. Another interview appeared last month in Kd McIntosh's WRITE LIKELY (http://www.onelist.com/archive/WriteLikely), archived in Digest 13. My article, "Check Out From the Library--Permanently," addressing safety issues for children in libraries, appeared in Carl Ellis' YOUR FAMILY FIRST newsletter (cellis@wcoil.com). FOREWORD (http://www.forewordmagazine.com) starts publishing e-book reviews in the Jan. 2000 issue. I'm one of the reviewers, and excited doesn't begin to describe how I feel about being one of the inaugural e-book reviewers for them! A new website, Blether.com (http://www.blether.com) is reprinting reviews written by myself and Beth Spires for TBR. These reviews are also available at the Writer's Getaway (http://home.sprintmail.com/~grant313), another interesting site. I'm involved in ongoing negotiations with Larry Leverett of Hollywood Beat to host a cable show tentatively titled "Libraries & Museums of the World." I'll keep you posted on my progress. Whew! On top of everything else, I present the issue you are currently reading *and* a special issue will be sent on Dec. 15 with even more reviews of the fantastic books and e-books I've been reading. If you are enjoying TBR, please drop a note to Writer's Digest at wd-zinescene@fwpubs.com for consideration for their new Zine Scene column. Thank you and Happy Holidays! ============================================= If your e-mail does not automatically format the URLs used in this e-zine, copy and paste the full address (including wrap-around lines) into the address line of your Internet Service Provider. ============================================= REVIEWS ============================================= If you would like to submit a review for consideration, e-mail BookdragonReview-owner@onelist.com. ============================================= Golden, Christopher, and Nancy Holder. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Immortal. Oct. 1999. 309p. Pocket, $15.37 ISBN 0671041177. [Young Adult/Paranormal] http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671041177/thebookdragonrev/sr=1-2/10 2-3523788-8734435 Melanie C. Duncan, reviewer Buffy, in all her occasionally brainy, perpetually kick-a$$ attitude, faces her most deceptive opponent with the ever-present help of Giles, her Watcher, Xander, Cordelia, Willow, Oz and Angel, a vampire with a soul. IMMORTAL takes place after Buffy returns to Sunnydale and is forced to face the fact that she and Angel will never be a couple. They can't even say "I love you" without Angel losing his soul again, although the authors do slip at one point and Angel retains his soul. While Buffy deals with her troubled love life, her mother keeps secrets about her own health which emphasize the shortness of life to the present Slayer. Veronique, a new threat in town, displays the ability to jump from body to body while trying to raise the Triumvirate, an evil which will bring about the destruction of life on Earth. She has been promised the honor of drinking the blood of the last man, and no perky blonde Slayer is going to stop her. Fans of Buffy will adore her latest adventure, and the people in charge of the Old English Dictionary will find a host of new terms to include in the next edition. See you in "geeker heaven"! --------------- Howard, Linda. All the Queen's Men. Aug. 1999. 332p. Pocket, $16.77 ISBN 0671034413. [Romantic Suspense] http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0671034413/thebookdragonrev/sr=1-1/10 2-3523788-8734435 Melanie C. Duncan, reviewer (Originally appeared in Booklist) Mysterious John Medina, last seen lurking in the shadows in Kill & Tell (1998), now stars in a high-suspense romance. Paired with electronics expert Niema Burdock, the widow of one of his late operatives, Medina intends to discover the source of a new, undetectable explosive used by terrorists to destroy an airplane carrying 263 people. Unfortunately for him, Niema is not thrilled about their partnership. After listening on the short-wave radio to her husband die, she barely remembers the escape from Iran overseen by "Tucker," a.k.a. Medina, and now, five years later, is reluctant to give up her desk job. Then, as they team up to trap an arms dealer, Medina reveals his secondary objective: to get Niema into his bed and his life by any means necessary. Niema doesn't know which terrifies her more: the mission or John. Howard's trademark darkly sensual style and intense, layered plot will delight her fans and will also appeal to admirers of Iris Johansen. Copyright© 1999, American Library Association. [Science Fiction/Series] http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345428447/thebookdragonrev/sr=1-2/10 2-3523788-8734435 Beth Spires, reviewer The first novel in the New Jedi Order series is set twenty-five years after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. The Empire and the New Republic exist in an uneasy peace, but distrust between the worlds and races threatens the stability of the New Republic. Luke Skywalker hopes to convince the New Republic Advisory Council of the need to re-establish the Jedi Council. Meanwhile, Leia is sent on a mission to resolve tension between two neighboring planets. All the while a new threat makes its presence felt in the farthest reaches of New Republic space. The invasion begins with the fall of a small research station on the outskirts of New Republic space. A race of fierce warriors have set their sights on the New Republic and it is up to Luke, Han, Leia and their children to repell the invaders and save the galaxy. Many characters from previous Star Wars novels show up, including Kip Dorran, whose personality undergoes a 180-degree change from his last appearance. This same character, while piloting an X-Wing, manages to fly through hyperspace without the ship's canopy or shields. That flaw in the story was hard to ignore. The book's biggest flaw, however, is that it is another in the "Han, Luke, and Leia Save the Universe" saga. The story was predictable and the ending too abrupt. Del Rey has planned a number of novels in the New Jedi Order series. Hopefully, they will be an improvement on the first. --------------- Bear, Greg. Moving Mars. 1994. Tor, $5.59 ISBN 0812524802. [Science Fiction] http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0812524802/thebookdragonrev/sr=1-15/1 02-3523788-8734435 Charles D. Treadway, reviewer In the Hugo-nominated MOVING MARS, Greg Bear creates a believable young society coping with the hostile environment of Mars and the added threat of a powerful and overreaching Earth. Bear's ideas involving the biology of Mars and his fantastic application of technology and theoretical physics are particularly outstanding. These conditions produce a unique society with a loose, liberty-loving form of self-government. The novel opens in the midst of a student rebellion. Illegal orders from local governor Freechild Dauble, who lusts for power and the presidency of Mars, outrage the students. Dauble has tried for years to establish a government with central control of Mars. She plans to appoint herself as the first president of the red planet. Amid this political backdrop, meet Cassiea Majumdar and Charles Franklin, two extraordinary people who sacrifice a lifetime together to pursue separate interests and careers. In Mars' darkest hour, Cassiea and Charles unleash a secret plan to save their home. This novel is Bear at his creative best! Read and cheer for the "red rabbits," as the citizens of Mars call themselves. ============================================= SERIES SHORTS ============================================= 12/99 Suzanne Brockman, Undercover Princess (Royally Wed) Silhouette Intimate Moments #968 Not one of her SEALs titles, but her usual entertaining style. --------------- 1/2000 Lass Small, A Texan Come Courting (The Keepers of Texas) Silhouette Desire #1263 A disappointment. Duncan, reviewer Johnny Depp provides a hilariously quirky interpretation of Constable Ichabod Crane, a wanna-be detective who makes his own investigative equipment and is torn between the idea of fainting at the sight of blood or finding the culprit. After antagonizing his superiors one too many times, Crane is banished to rural Sleepy Hollow to put his "scientific" methods to the test. Greeted with a kiss from a blindfolded young woman (Ricci), Crane's devotion to his search suffers a slight detour, but he soon finds the bodies piling up. The dreary colors of the movie, meant to inspire dread or forboding, instead highlight Depp's offbeat portrayal, and even the few bloody scenes are more comedic than frightening or nauseating. The "Headless Horseman" (Christopher Walken) provides the only suspenseful moments in the film. Heads do roll onscreen, but if you're looking for a good scare, try Disney's version. --------------- TOY STORY 2 Starring Tim Allen, Tom Hanks Walt Disney/Pixar Melanie C. Duncan, reviewer Buzz (Allen) and Woody (Hanks) are back on the big screen with even better computer animation than the first movie, and this time it's Buzz to the rescue. While trying to save another toy from the dreaded "yard sale," Woody is kidnapped by an unscrupulous toy collector. As Buzz quickly rounds up a search and rescue party, Woody learns about his past as the star of a black-and-white television show with a franchise of his own. The overt gags will entertain the kids, but the tongue-in-cheek humor and other subtle messages will have adults rolling in the aisles. The computer animation is realistic enough in spots to make the evil collector look like flesh and blood. A perfect escape from holiday shopping for the whole family! ============================================= Q & A ============================================= From: Marion Price Q: A friend forwarded your newsletter (great newsletter) to me and I HOPE you can get an answer to my question. In September, I downloaded a free copy of the first book of Sharon Reddy's Paradox Equation. I bought the rest of the series the next day because I dreamed about the characters and wanted more! I've read the entire series four times now and, though I like e-books a lot, especially because of their price, I want these books in my personal library FOREVER.... Two questions: Will there be more books about the Gallants and are there plans for a print edition? A: Sharon Reddy released a cd-rom version of the Paradox Equation this month. The cd-rom will be readable as Word 97, RTF, HTML and Rocket. No word on the print version yet, but I'm passing the word on to Sharon . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Do you have a question about a book, a movie, an author, a comic that you would like to know the answer to? Pulp-style author, Joel Jenkins, has combined electronic mail and the serialized form with a style of writing that hearkens back to the lurid fiction of the 1920’s and 30’s. Though this style is often referred to as Pulp Fiction, the words no longer come printed on the low-grade pulp paper of dime magazines, but are delivered via email five times a week. The stories are excitement packed, with intrepid heroes triumphing over evil, but the installments have been shortened to accommodate the ever-shrinking leisure time of today’s busy world. Gun slinging rock musicians, supernatural-plagued racecar drivers, and genetically enhanced supermen and women are among the characters that populate Jenkins’ fiction. Working in a variety of genres, everything from fantasy and science fiction to weird adventure, Jenkins sticks to the pulp esthetic of fast-paced plotting and plenty of action. Each installment runs from three to six hundred words in length and is designed to leave the reader wanting more. The stories themselves run between ten and sixty parts each, with a new tale beginning as soon as the previous is wrapped up. There is no subscription charge for Electronic Tales, and interested readers can sign up at http://www.electronictales.com. ============================================= TO SUBSCRIBE: Send any e-mail to BookdragonReview-subscribe@onelist.com TO UNSUBSCRIBE: Send any e-mail to BookdragonReview-unsubscribe@onelist.com ============================================= T h e B o o k d r a g o n R e v i e w Melanie C.
