"Creating Killer Web Sites" was the first true design book for the Web. It became the best-selling book on the Internet in 1996 and has been translated into ten languages. It has taught an entire generation of site designers how to get control over their pages. It shows, in practical terms, the fundamentals of design applied to the Web. Now completely updated! Every chapter has new material! In this expanded second edition, you'll find the techniques and principles you need to build sites for today's 4.0 and the coming 5.0 browsers. Much of the book has been rewritten with new tips, new tools, updated HTML, and an emphasis on cross-browser compatibility. There are three new chapters on strategies designers will need to know going forward, including a detailed style-sheet tutorial. «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» SPECIAL FEATURE ARTICLE «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» Since this is the first issue of All About Web Design!(tm) I am not running an aticle, but instead would like to tell you what you can expect from this newsletter. We all have to start at the beginning. Some of us are more experienced than others simply because we all start at different times. This newsletter will try to help everyone, no matter what stage of the game you are at. My job will be to try to include something for everybody. If there is a topic you would like to see covered, please let me know. There will be articles, original ones, written by yours truly, as well as some quality articles that I find elsewhere. I would like to encourage reader participation. So if you know something that might benefit someone else, please share. You can gain a little publicity for your web site this way. If you feel you cannot write articles, then just send an email. And please let me know what you want to see in this newsletter. I have spent countless hours cruising around the 'net. Once I learned to navigate, I collected over 100,000 bookmarks, tried to keep them organized so I could find them, and would like to share some of the incredible information I have discovered. I will sometimes direct you to these sites, and on other occassions I will capsulate what I have learned in the form of an article. I will be doing web site critiques and designing as part of my online business. I would like to run some sort of a contest for my wonderful subscribers and offer a free web site critique as a prize. I sure could use some input from all of you as to what sort of contest you might like to participate in. Perhaps you could get me a bazillion subscribers. I have discovered that there is no need to hire someone to create a web presence for you. There is an incredible amount of information out there in cyerspace. Everything you need to know to build an absolutely incredible site is there for you to use...and it's free. I have found some amazing tutorials that are easy to understand, and walk you through every step. I have found tools and utilities for helping to build and maintain a site. You can create amazing graphics without knowing how to do graphics. Yep, thats what I said. I do it all the time. UKJ thinks I'm talented. but I'm not. I just know where to go. Its really that simple. However, if you want to get into graphics software and learn how to make graphics, I can help you with that, too. I know where to get just about any software for free. I also can direct you to sites that help you learn how to use the software. By the time we are into this for a while, there are going to be some great sites out there. YOURS! So hang on for the ride. I will do my best to deserve your loyal readership. Peace and love to you all, windsong «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» LINKS OF INTEREST TO WEB DESIGNERS AND WEBMASTERS «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» If you are in need of web utilities, webmasters tools, graphics compression tools, link checkers, graphics generators, etc, etc, check out the resources at: http://marketing-resources.com/utilities.html _________________________________ Want to know more about doorway pages? check this out: http://virtualpromote.com/entrypages.html _________________________________ Here is a great resource you will want to bookmark for reference. They assume they have to upload the code to the server and view their work online. Netscape users: You can view your work in Netscape by using the open file command. Click on 'file' then 'open page' then 'choose file' for the page you want to view. Internet Explorer users: You can view your work in Internet Explorer by using the open file command. Click on 'file' then 'open' then 'browse' for the page you want to view. Its nice to have both your source html and your browser running side by side. Everytime you make a change in the source, simply reload the page. Its a nice tight loop that lets you see what you are doing as you go. ___________________________________ A good overall design has the following three traits: 1.It has unity and variety. 2.It supports, but does not overpower the message. 3.It is appropriate to the particular message being conveyed. Everything on your site should fit together into a recognizable whole, however, you must maintain enough variety to keep things interesting. Unity and consistency are very important principles of design. The design of a site should be consistent from one page to another. When a visitor clicks to another page on your site, don't make him wonder if he is still at your site. «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» THIS MONTH'S CLASSIFIEDS «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» Each issue of "All About Web Design!"(tm) is sponsored by a small number of web designers, publishers, and webmasters like yourself.
