There is a potential for political unrest and violence during the official mourning period, scheduled to end on May 6, and during the period leading up to provincial elections on May 17. U.S. citizens in Sri Lanka should avoid political demonstrations and mass gatherings, during which they may inadvertantly become victims of violence. U.S. citizens are encouraged to register their presence at the U.S. Embassy, located at 210 Galle Rd., Colombo, telephone number (94-1)44-8007. No. 93-019 This Travel Warning replaces the Warning dated May 1, 1993 to reflect the end of the countrywide 24-hour curfew and to advise of the potential for political unrest during Sri Lanka's official mourning period and during countrywide elections.
