Sri Lanka - Travel Warning
 May 3, 1993

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to defer 
non-essential travel to Sri Lanka because of the tense situation 
resulting from the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadsa.  
There is a potential for political unrest and violence during the 
official mourning period, scheduled to end on May 6, and during the 
period leading up to provincial elections on May 17.  U.S. citizens 
in Sri Lanka should avoid political demonstrations and mass 
gatherings, during which they may inadvertantly become victims of 
violence.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to register their presence 
at the U.S. Embassy, located at 210 Galle Rd., Colombo, telephone 
number (94-1)44-8007.

This Travel Warning replaces the Warning dated May 1, 1993 to 
reflect the end of the countrywide 24-hour curfew and to advise of 
the potential for political unrest during Sri Lanka's official 
mourning period and during countrywide elections.
