For Immediate Release

The following message was released by the U.S. Embassy in Lagos, 
Nigeria on August 2:

The American Embassy continues to monitor the changing political, 
security and fuel situation in Nigeria.  The ongoing petroleum 
workers strike has interrupted local airline schedules and made 
other public transportation scarce.  Bank closings are causing 
currency shortages.  The U.S. Embassy has received reports of unrest 
in various parts of Lagos (including Mushin, Marina, Oshodi and on 
the bridges) and in Ibadan.  Several foreign companies have chosen 
to send dependents home, and those those in the petroleum and 
banking industries have received threats.  The U.S. Embassy advises 
Americans in Nigeria to avoid unnecessary travel within the country 
and to be alert to their personal security.
